I think Classic players like Hendrix and Stevie Ray will always be reference points for any generation of future new guitarists. But in the here and now, who is relevant or making contemporary music that inspires the current generation of guitarists is very important. And you Chris, certainly tick that box of being inspiring and current. Keep doing what you’re doing !

      @@SandauxBeats
      That’s all well and good, but regardless of who’s your favorite, Ally Venable belongs on no top 100 guitarists list, for any reason.
      Chris has no influence or songs, that makes any point to make him so high on that list.
      He’s my favorite player right now. By right now, I mean TH-camrs and musicians just starting to make a real mark as a musician.
      I think Martin Miller feels as sterile as surgical instruments, compared with Chris, and Chris would destroy Albert King on his best day, but he had 60 years of the art style changing, and isn’t just playing straight blues.
      Jeff Beck did play blues songs, but the majority of his music is so beyond just blues.
      He is best known for his fusion work. I love his Yardbirds snd Jeff Beck Group stuff, that’s more blues centralized, but it’s far from his best work.
      It’s like the people who put this out, were purposely doing it to start a reaction, and get eyes on it, or just to see how angry it would make people.

      @@Andrew_M_WardIf your original comment was meant ironic then I did not realized any irony I have to admid. These lists only purpose is to get attentention via dispute and controvery. It is not about praising anybody. The main thing is to start a discussion about....nothing. And to provoke people to make controversial statements in order to produce misunderstanding. There is no way to compare an afro-american guitarist/vocalist (in an afro-american genre) from 1929 to some white guitarist from Northern America or Europe in the 21st century. It should not be about competion as mentioned in the video. There is no praise including someone in a list or rating who realized that and does not want to be any part because of it. Again - these lists are made to get attention not to praise anybody and people who are writing those lists do not care if some of their "praised" guitarists will get negative feedback and have to explain themselves to whatever public and have to deal with it.

    With such a plethora of great guitarists to listen to, and realistically a relatively short amount of time to actually listen , there is in essence a competition for who subjectively wins the right to one’s personal airplay. Chris, your style , technique, feel, attack, tone et al, are among the best to have surfaced. Your humility also is something to admire.
    Thanks for blessing us with your unique, God given talent.

  • @simonhughes656

    Agreed 100% - Guitar Playing is not a competition - Other players inspire, they challenge your playing, they improve you. It's brilliant that your playing is getting the recognition it deserves, as you do inspire, and have brought great joy through your music.
    I also love John Mayer and Jeff Healey, amongst many of the other names you mentioned, and they have inspired me in many different (not better or worse ways) and this is the point.
    How can something so subjective as music ever be ranked, and something that is so subjective it can change based on this listeners mood, or circumstanes. Sometimes the best thing i've ever heard is Healey tearing up "As the years go passing by" othertimes i'd much rather hear Mayer play "Walt Grace"
    But one things for sure love listening to Mr Buck play ! Can't wait to hear the new album - and seeing you on that famous stage at Shepherds Bush come Autumn

    You sure can play, mate. You’ve got glorious tone and your channel has amazing content. In the modern age, having quality content and knowledge about the history of these amazing instruments which constantly drain our income is possibly the true sign of a ‘great guitarist’ as much as any of the qualities that resulted in the players you revere being listed. Don’t listen to the haters... Shakespeare said it best with “If music be the food of love”. Your channel alone is testament to your talent and enthusiasm.... and no doubt inspires others to pick up a guitar. Inspiring others to play in the sign of a great. Much love, brother.

    So well said. The idea that playing guitar should somehow become a competition destroys the notion of it being an art form. There can never be a "best" guitar player. Certainly we have seen geniuses come and go, and that's incredibly inspiring, but the creation of music is art and there's no need for endless silly comparisons. Instead, let's make music !

    The culture today seems to be obsessed with who is the "greatest" instead of who is "great". Every genre or activity or sport has to have a definable GOAT. It's all so silly, and truthfully, is done for the most part to get clicks on social media.
    The moral of the story, if you enjoy listening to a particular guitar player or band, buy their records, CD's, downloads, whatever... just support them and enjoy.

    I usually say that the appeal of these Greatest Ever lists (musician, album, film, book, video game, TV series, athlete...) is not in arguing over their placement in the ranking, but in reading the praise that the publication has written alongside each entry. If you're lucky, a good writer will be able to write about ones you're familiar with in a way that sums up what you like about them - or will be able to make a name you've never heard of sound worth checking out.

I completely understand why you were put in a blues category even though you are a soul and rock guitarist, because your touch and feel is so uniquely identifiable as you comparable only to the slide playing of say derek truck (slide master and someone no one would question being in a blues list) your feel is unobtainable and sings a completely separate section of the song! Mate, you’re good, you’re also humble and that makes me appreciate you more and I think will make you better at your craft. Your self reflection keeps you wanting to push your ability and keeps you hungry. Your insights have really elevated my playing and appreciation for the instrument and I can’t tell you how grateful I am. Sincerely, from the heart, thanks, mate.

    Chris you’re right: there’s nothing as “the best” or “better” guitarist.
    Nevertheless: once this list exists, you belong on it. You stand out and created your own voice on the guitar. Something many virtuoso shredders might never achieve.
    Keep the great work, keep growing as a guitar player and a human being. Thank you.

    Well said, Chris. It's nice to hear a terrific player who is also grounded, opinion and outlook wise. In the 70s, I was in a great trio doing Cream/Butterfield stuff and we were hijacked by a stranger who declared himself as our manager. The greatest band in our city had broken up a few months previously, and the guitar player was my hero. Our manager spoke to him, without our knowledge, and invited him to a gig to consider joining the band. He came to the gig and left as a member. I was thrilled, but thought I'd just become a rhythm player. I was very wrong. The next three years were the greatest fun and learning experience ever. Anyone who's in the game to best other players isn't a true musician at heart, and they miss the greatest part of the experience.

    Good post...guitar playing seems to have become a technical competition, rather than a musical discovery over recent times, obviously because of social media etc. The most important thing is to be real and let your natural ability come out when playing, its not a hiw many notes you can hit in second competition etc, your passion comes through in your guitar playing and thats why you have rightly became successful.

    I was at a New Year's Eve jam party a few months back, I was trading licks with Grammy Award-winner Larry Mitchell in someone's living room. I only had an inkling of who he was, but he just played along with everyone else like one of the locals. That's what it's about, really. When I was leaving , he came over and shook my hand, said nice playing with you. That's a real musician!

    Thanks Chris, you are spot on. Being a musician is not about taking part in a championship.
    Yes it is a little about being the best; the best you! As long as you continue to grow a a guitarist
    and as a person you truly are doing the right thing. You really do that and I do admire you, for
    both reasons. I love your playing and I really love your very sane approach in your videos.
    Keep up the good work, I am looking forward to your videos every Friday!
    Thanks again! Cheers from Norway!

    Great video! I have always found that the biggest benefit of playing with others is that I get better. I doubt it's any different for players of higher stature. And I absolutely LOVE when I'm playing with someone and they do something cool! It's not jealousy, it admiration and motivation!

    You deserve to be on any list with anyone. Like you said it's pretty arbitrary, but you have your own unique style, sound, and vibe. When you can still do that after millions upon millions of people have picked up the guitar and tried and failed...that's special. Some of those people are amazing players but still fail to be unique....that's why you are on these lists and mine. I play every rock instrument, and well, but could never image being as good as you. Soak it in and screw the haters.

    As John McLaughlin has said music, guitar playing, is not a competition. It's about the music, not ego and competition. Let's all make the best music we can while having the best time doing it and appreciate those players who inspire us.

    Chris, your attitude is refreshing and surprisingly honest. Be proud that your fans felt strongly enough to vote you onto the list of the best blues players. Maybe the placement at 27 is a bit…..premature let’s say, but there’s no shame in saying, “Hey, it’s very cool to be on this list!” It’s ok to give yourself a little pat on the back.
    On another note, sometimes it does seem that there is a bit of competition between some of the Nashville cats. They do seem to enjoy trying to out do one another.

    you are an awesome guitar player Chris. You are also completely genuine and completely original. You created your own style that you mastered in a way that nobody ever will be able to copy. It is wonderful to see that there are new things happening in guitar, even given all the history that we lived through. The way you can take a solo, hit every note and propel it to ever greater heights every time the listener thinks it could not possibly go any higher is truly spectacular. The combination of melodicism, virtuosity, taste and tone is absolutely unique .... and how nice that you are just as much of a great nerd than all the rest of us :-)

    Hey brother I said this in another video of yours before I seen this and knew anything about it. First off , congratulations you deserve it, but you are right , it is not as competition and if other players who think it is , well they have other issues that need to be addressed, you are an amazing player, among the best players of past and future. Players should be helping other players to get better, but unfortunately that’s not real, a lot of players are way to selfish and only care that they are great and show off and everything else that’s come with it. It’s sad. Amazing stuff brother. Cheers!!

    Christ I'm 67 years old & can tell you that some things never change! The old "this guitarist is better or greater than that one" has been around since the early days of rock. And even though I wouldn't consider myself a "guitarist", more like a noodler, I've been around enough "real" musicians to tell you you're 100% correct in you assessment that NO guitarist would ever claim the title of "Greatest or Best" rather most true musicians are some of the most humble people on the planet (at least as far as their playing is concerned). I wouldn't worry or be concerned all that much over your inclusion or worry about the naysayers because you have worked very hard to make a name for yourself & your playing shows it. You deserve to be on that list just as much as the people you idolize which I'm sure they would agree as well.

    • @direnova6284
      @direnova6284 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree because the very best musicians know they know nothing and that's when they're at their best, on the edge of what they know and what they don't know, where creativity is at it's most inspired.

    In my eyes, Chris, you are up there with the best because you can do what they do, but you virtually never need to look at the fretboard while you're doing it and I can't think of anyone else who can do that.

  • @Alex-pr6zv
    @Alex-pr6zv 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I love your fluid style and inventive use of the fretboard on January came Close In fact, my favourites are the last three cuts on the album. When it comes to favorite blues guitarists, I was fortunate to witness the genius of Jeff Healey play twice, seeing those fingers whizzing over the fretboard on his lap, much better live than on any studio recording. Everyone loves a list, but most of them them are deeply flawed with glaring omissions.

  • @PerpetuallyTiredMusician
    @PerpetuallyTiredMusician 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    As a perpetually writing musician who has played, studied and written with other musicians for over 25 years now I no longer care about the "others". Those who think that its only about mastery, about learning other peoples songs and techniques perfectly, that every technical new song is a everest to plant a flag on and that every solo is a notch in the bed post, a conquest to brag about. Let them have social media, its all they got, can you imagine a more empty life? Its like getting into cooking and only care about how efficiently you can chop onions and whos the best at it while never learning to actually cook a proper meal or caring about how food tastes, pretty stupid. And as for the list thing, if it was my list you would get #1, as a fellow Chris/Kris/Cris there is no other possible outcome. Plus you have a tasty tonal language, you sound like you, not like a royalty free, non descript, soundalike lick repository like most others do. In short, you got the thing that actually counts.
    Peace

    Chris, I've watched FriFerks for a long time and have enjoyed it all, but this is the most welcome episode I've seen. I can't think of another musician who would have even tried to do what you just did, let alone so honestly and eloquently. Not, of course, that you'll have any impact on those people who get so riled up that they fire off indignant and outraged comments online, or even go so far as insulting and denigrating musicians directly. After all, it's a form of excitement and pursuit of a tribal cause that some people lack. Very silly. Finally, while I appreciate your humility, I can't think of any guitarist in whose company you are not fit to stand.
