I have been a loner in the hobby since the mass exodus of all my friends in 1991-92. I am literally the only one who stuck with hobby in the past 30 years. Part of me misses talking cards with friends but part of me always loves being the lone wolf in the hobby. It’s sort of the point of finding a hobby as it supposed to be something you enjoy on your downtime by yourself. In saying that, i have enjoyed finding all of the hobby TH-camrs in the past few years. I’m not into the investor TH-camrs, just the collector TH-camrs as it’s interesting to see what they are collecting. I will say that the TH-cam community really opened my eyes to vintage. For years, i did not venture into vintage because i thought that high grade cards were only relevant to collect, and they were so out of my price range. Once you guys open my eyes to lower grade eye appeal vintage cards, it was like unlocking a whole new world of collecting.
Great outside the box topic today Dustin. I appreciate your self-awareness and the way you don't let the trolls get to you. I am more extroverted than introverted and I love having lots of friends and have been fortunate to make many over the years in this hobby. But not all "friends" are the same and they don't all fulfill me in the same way. Some are content friends i.e., fellow creators, commenters, dm'ers, some I've met in person and the friendships have transcended into getting to know each others families and some have become true confidants. Yet, despite all of these friends, there are times when I feel alone in the hobby and in the content but that may be tied to other things. Anyway, thank you for provoking some self-reflection, I enjoy your videos most when you bring the psychology of life into the hobby. Have a great day, my friend!
I’m definitely a happy loner in the hobby. I collect for my own enjoyment. I’ve shared my collection and had some great experiences with my family but at the end of the day, I collect for me. I’m not interested in what is cool at the moment or using cards as an “investment” but it is fun to watch content. It’s a nice escape from reality. Thanks for your videos. I enjoy them.
As a much smaller creator in your space, I REALLY appreciate this video. We can't all - and shouldn't all - be Geoff, or the SCR guys, or even you. We should just make videos and open cards and collect stuff the way WE want to, and if other people don't like it, tough, and if they do, great, come along for the ride.
I love this take. (and also really appreciated this video by Dustin). We should all be ourselves, be authentic and if it resonates with others, wonderful, if not, no worries, life to too short to worry about what everyone says or thinks about us and our hobby styles.
I'm a loner, and always have been. It's never bothered me. As someone who converted over into original photos, I find the space a little more bare, but that's been a good thing!! While popularity is definitely picking up, I've managed rookies of (at a fraction of the cost of rookie cards), Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, George Brett, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, etc. I couldn't be happier. I found an affordable place in the hobby that I could thrive and replace my card collection with. Never thought I'd be able to afford rookies I've obtained, especially at a fraction of the rookie cards. I don't need someone to share my collection with, except family.
I can remember when I first got into vintage as a 14 year old. None of my friends were into it and I really didn't know what I was doing. It was kinda like getting married after a blind date - and I had two choices, either quit collecting, or continue - which meant long hours studying and trying to find others who could point me in the right directions. Fortunately for me, a number of older collectors took me under their wing and taught me the ropes but I'm still learning. And because I don't know everything, even after 30 years in Vintage, I still reach out to others. The hobby is what you put into it and what you get out of it. You can do it on your own behind the comfort of your computer or you can go to shows and mingle with others, or you can do a bit of both. There's bo right way or wrong way to enjoy the hobby and collect cards. Since I don't drink or hang out with funny women, I enjoy spending time after a days work and going over my collection or researching cards, or hobby history, etc. However, I also enjoy sharing my knowledge and the hobby with others, and I want to learn from others as well. For me personally growing up with a disability was difficult, and thankfully my peers never made fun of me or treated me differently because of that (it was usually grown ups and teachers, employers who did that) but one thing I learned very early on with the loss of my parents is that people are finite. People and relationships come and go, and nothing in life is set in stone. I enjoy my time with the people I've met in and outside of the hobby, which has really enriched my life in ways I couldn't have imagined as a 14 year old first starting out in Vintage. Looking back, I'm pretty proud of what I was able to accomplish in the hobby, but I also couldn't have done it alone either.
I’m over trying to fit in. The vast majority of my acquaintances/friends don’t share my interest in sports cards. They also don’t share my love and dedication to my bigger loves: running & cycling.
I have Asperger’s, so it’s easier being a “loner”. I enjoy being social, but people be people and I haven’t had the best of luck with people throughout my life. Watching videos like yours helps me feel a part of the community without all the social constraints.
Your a good man. A lot of the things you said I can relate too. Especially the point about being low key and not wanting too much attention. Sorry to hear about the trollers. You have a great attitude about that. Take care
I agree Daniel. Dustin is literally a breath of fresh air every morning and while we all don't have to agree with everything he says or all of his takes etc, I truly think that he provides a much needed air of positivity in our hobby.
Loner here, too. I'm the only one in my family that collects cards (or anything, for that matter). No close hobby friends. It's just me and my cards, mannnnn! #TheHobbyist
Some like me are introverts, but love doing video's to show off our pickups and educate a little. It was great having friends in my local area, but TH-cam has expanded that to nearly any town I travel to in the USA.
I’ve always enjoyed collecting regardless, did it solo (aside from being buddies w the card shop owner due to frequent visits lol) for many years when cards were worth way less and people thought it was childish. Then I randomly mentioned watching a break while playing Xbox live w some friends about 5 years ago and one kid piped up that he collected too. We’ve since become extremely close and I’ve made TONS of friends and am “known” in my local card community. I enjoyed both but everything is more fun with friends!
My father told me back in the early 90’s (during the height of collecting) that anything being promoted/advertised as being ‘collectible’ will not have value later. I mean who would have thought MJ Valentine’s Day cards would fetch insane $? Could have spent $20 on Feb 16th 1993 and retired off the 1000 valentines purchased 90% off.
My hobby friends are basically you and Cajun cardboard through me watching your videos! ☺️ And I talk to my wife and kids about my cards but they don’t care that much about it unfortunately.
Loners are deep thinkers who make well thought out decisions. Spending time with my collection gives me a happy zone for personal alone time, reflection, and decompression. Happy collecting! 🥳
I think you can be both....a loner in your alone time and more social in social times. Sounds silly, but I think its true, at least for me. Comes down to balance.
As a card loner i all ways thought out in how I want my collection and it gives me time to think about which cards will hold value in time it's all ways good to think about how many of the card is out there so you can make smart decisions
🙋🏾♂️🙋🏾♂️🙋🏾♂️I am definitely a loner hobbyist and introvert at heart. I’ve been a part of several activities with multiple communities to connect with, but at the end of the day, I just like doing what I do and then coming home lol.. I live in a very small town and I collect Marvel cards, I don’t think there’s anyone in this town that does that other than me lol..
Sounds like you have balance. Out and about fulfilling your basic human need of community and then spending evenings in self-reflection and quiet. I love it.
Im a card hobby loner as well i love the card hobby because its something to show for i dont ever see my self getting out of the card hobby it makes me happy and have nice cards and i even see collecting cards as a nice keep sake
Totally a loner in hobby collecting/investing and I’m fine with it. Sometimes share cards on IG. Had a friend tell me once to post other things besides my cards. Made me want to double down. Ha! Not really in to sharing vacation or selfies or all that other stuff. Carry on. Cheers!
Unless you are one with nature, a makeshift sleep area made from branches, moss, dry grass, and eat campfire caught animals, nah, more like an Introvert. You create a den with everything you like and slowly share it with ones you like
I’m basically a hobby loner IRL. I added a few hobby friends during covid, but most left the hobby after 2022. I do have one person who I’ve been friends with for 15 years who i got into the hobby during covid who is still in the hobby and we talk cards every day. Sometimes you just need one person to bounce ideas off of and to share excitement. Aside from that, i have several casual friends who I’ve made in the hobby by meeting at shows or by engaging in their content. But im perfectly happy looking at my collection by myself 😊
That one good hobby friend can be one of the most fulfilling relationships in our lives. I've had some like that almost all have remained for 5/10/20+ years but some do move on and with the common interest no longer in common, the relationships fade. Such is life, everything is temporary "at the end of the day" lol.
@ thank you for your comment. I 100% agree. That one relationship can make such a big difference in the hobby. Someone to encourage you. Someone to educate you. Someone to act as a sounding board and someone to help prevent you from making a big collecting/investing mistake
Definitely a hobby loaner and for the most part I’m ok with that. It would be cool to have someone to get as excited as I do when I land a big card or to talk cards with but eh no biggie.
I relate to this. I like the individual, solitary aspect of collecting. Each collector builds his own collection, for his own satisfaction and enjoyment. Participation in the social or parasocial part is optional.
I been collecting sport and non sports cards since the late 80s being a female makes it even more isolated and kinda lonely but it never bothered me because I do it for me as a fun activity.
I do my own thing. If you want to consider that being a loner, so be it. In my experience, people tend to suck the fun out of collecting. So it kinda seems like a you problem to me.
