Your old Lynx probably has an easily repairable fault. You’ve got to get it fixed as a thank you for all the good memories it’s given you.

Always love to see love for the Lynx. It remains a personal favorite of mine, and I’m thankful that we have decent emulators to enjoy on my desktop Mac. That said, I have made it my mission in life to collect several actual handhelds just so I can finally experience Lynx multiplayer, which remains a holy grail among classic videogamers.
For software, I would recommend all the Epyx titles (obviously), the many arcade titles, the two Amiga Psygnosis games, and the original multiplayer games like Checkered Flag, Battlewheels and Warbirds.
I’d say half the Lynx software library is a steaming pile of hot garbage, but it’s better half is quite excellent and has aged very gracefully. I am amazed at just how advanced the hardware is, and how long it took before all its features, especially its 3D graphics, we’re finally surpassed.
My personal Lynx top ten (at the moment): California Games, Slime World, Checkered Flag, Blue Lightning, Electrocop, Shanghai, Roadblasters, STUN Runner, Xenophobe.
    Okay, I’ll go to 30…
Lynx 11-20: Robotron, Rampage, Turbo Sub, Klax, Chip’s Challenge, Shadow of the Beast, Lemmings, Xybots, Crystal Mines 2, Steel Talons.
Lynx 21-30: Awesome Golf, Ninja Gaiden, Paperboy, Gates of Zendocon, Warbirds, Hydra, Jpust, Battlezone 2000, Rampart, Rygar.

I had one run-in with the Lynx as a 9 year old. I was at my friend Dale's house. He was a nice dude but one of those kids whose parents buy all the latest and greatest things for - and because he had everything, he didn't care about anything. I remember wandering into his room and seeing this device from the future. I only knew of the GameBoy at that time, with its monochrome screen. Seeing the Lynx fire-up with color graphics and some close to arcade ports, dropped my jaw to the floor. All I wanted to do was go hide in a dark corner and spend hours playing this device from the future, like some sort of fever dream. All I got however, was about five minutes - a couple round of California Games and Pit Fighter. Then Dale started huffing and whining that we should go outside and play road hockey. And that was that. A five minute fever dream and it was over. But much like any short lived fling, I've had a place in my heart for the Lynx ever since. In fact, it's why I picked up an Evercade last year. Maybe this year I'll do a little emulation of it. Either way, it's awesome.

I wish I had bought into the Lynx and Jaguar and Cougar (j/k - ha!) back in the day. Then again, I probably would have traded them in like so many other games I wish I still had. Still have a few other systems I need to collect first, but may take a chance on the Lynx someday. I’ll need a screen mod for the older eyes. Thanks for sharing!

  • @thewingedavenger1007

The Lynx had few games but it had the best version of Xybots. The arcade version had about 75% of clutter on screen, whereas the Lynx just showed you the action part. Even the unrealeased NES version had all the clutter.

What a great video! My favorite hand-held system for sure, and certainly a great system for the developer. The hardware was great but most of that hardware was the reason for the battery life problems. So many great memories during the 90s.

Great video, Gamester81 (all of your videos are)! Thanks for giving this under appreciated console some love. We Lynxters in the community know a good review of our favorite console when we see one, and yours is among the best...thank you.
Also, kudos to you for including gameplay of some of my faves: Zaku, Blue Lightning, etc.
BTW, the reason for turning off the backlight was to allow a player to pause a game, and then turn the backlight off to conserve the batteries. As you probably know, none of the original games included save states natively in their respective ROMs. Of course, cheat codes would allow a player to jump to a level on some games, but even those games didn’t actually save the state of play.
And for anyone looking to get into the Lynx community, there are a lot of great resources to visit: AtariGamer.com, Songbird Productions, Telegames, Inc., and, if I may be so bold, my podcast (link below).
Thanks again, Gamester81, for this comprehensive review of the Atari Lynx. Keep on Lynxing!

Like you California games was my first game. It has a nice version of Ms Pacman, Todds Adventure in Slimeworld is a nice game, Checkered Flag is fun, Kung Food is a nice beat em up sorta like Double Dragon, Chips Challenge makes you think, Awsome Golf is a nice golf game, Scrapyard Dog is a nice platformer, and if you like Klax i know for me personally the Lynx version was the best. Steel Talons actually pushes some impressive polygons. I even have a unfinished copy of Alien vs Predator for Lynx.

I love the Atari Lynx, it was the 2nd system I added to my retro gaming collection when I was like 12! I think it was actually your old videos that inspired me to get one. I think the Lynx’s biggest problem BY FAR is that it didn’t get the games library it deserved, and the Gameboy did because it stuck around due to how cheap it was. I think the Lynx is one of those systems that definitely could have changed everything but was dealt an ill hand. I just wish there were more games i actually wanted for the thing. It’s one of those “failed” (I don’t think it did fail) systems where you can’t necessarily blame anyone for it, I am not sure Atari could’ve done a much better job, hell, they made multiple revisions including most radically the mark 2 Lynx.
I gotta say that collecting for it back in 2010 or so was a blast. All the games were sealed in shrink wrap, all boxed obviously, brand new. They were insanely cheap too. My parents for me like 10 mint sealed games for it Christmas 2010, maybe it was my birthday I can’t remember. Amazing times.
Lynx mark 1 is also I believe one of the most aesthetically pleasing designs for a system. That nice slightly satin, grey paint, shiny black buttons, it’s weird shape, orange font. It had such a solid feel, true quality, and the trap door, man, I legit thought it was made of metal or something.
It’s quite sad to me that the Lynx didn’t get Eye of the Beholder release in the end, games like that would’ve been so awesome on it, I cannot find anyone selling the repro of it. I’m sure it he stuck around we’d have had Dungeon Master and stuff on it. Hell, probably Doom too if it hung ‘round long. It easily could’ve outlasted the Gameboy if it just for the install base. Shame Atari didn’t have enough money to take a heavy loss on the systems themselves to get them in the hands of gamers.
I think it’s Atari’s best system, certainly after the 2600, (except maybe the 7800 for its library) and leagues better than the Jaguar and Jag CD.
My favourite game is Rygar probably, I’m not that good at it. I’ve wanted to buy Toki for years, it’s quite expensive though in U.K.

For skateboarding, press down as the character goes down. Then press up after he hits the midway point, i.e. the bottom of the ramp. Once you reach the top of your jump, go back to pressing down. Repeat and you’ll gain speed and after a couple of back and forths, yo be able to land some tricks while in the air.

Lionel playworld was awesome. You see they finally destroyed that old building? I got my lynx at Babagges at Superstition Springs. But never knew anyone else that had a lynx growing up.
And fyi, the lynx 2 upgrade screen from Bennvenn is totally worth getting. And it's a drop-in screen. No solder needed. It's just hard to get since the guy is in Australia and they're out of stock sometimes.

    • @off1k
      @off1k 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You have to de-solder 1 component on the Lynx mobo, if you want brightness control and scanlines then you have to solder 1 wire.
Will second your comment regarding BennVenn screen worth getting, I have 3 of them, worth every cent :)) and not expensive.
