How to tune your damping to increase crawler climbing ability

  • Tuning the damping is one of the most important tuning factors for a crawler. Getting the shock oil weight right is quite easy but can mean buying quite a few bottles in different weights. Follow along if you want to have your truck tip less and not skip when it tries to go up hills.

    Great video, very helpful, With the traxxas or emulsion shock I normaly take the bottom eye off completely and push the shaft in so the thread just kisses the lower oring seal then screw cap on, get about 3mm of outward push doing this,

    Very clear explanation. It's my understanding that CST is a more accurate method of measuring oil viscosity than weight. Not so much an issue when using the comparing the same brand but it is when swapping brands i.e. a 25wt from brand A won't neccessarily be the same viscosity as 25wt from brand B. I'm like you in liking just a little bounce back.

    • @JustScalin
      @JustScalin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, and yes you’re totally right. That’s why I like the mixed packs. I’ve actually used a mix of 20-25 tonight to get a 23wt for the rears

  • @sroc3

    GREAT vid and amazing explanation of shocks and how proper oil viscosity is important. Question - I have a TRX4 Defender. FULL brass undercarriage mods to weight it down. I have RC4WD King Off-Road Racing Shocks that I have not installed yet. I'm NOT doing pure Professional crawling but want a good all a-rounder but MORE leaning towards crawling - let's say a 40/60 split. I have ordered 35w shock oil. Am I good? What would you recommend? I also have Pitbull 2 stage foam tires.

    • @JustScalin
      @JustScalin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure about the king shocks as I think the traxxas shocks are pretty amazing anyway. 35wt is good for crawling, although it might make the truck a bit bouncy on the trail. I run 25wt in my trail truck which does well at crawling too. That said with all the weight a thicker oil does make sense. Two stage foams are good with all that weight so sounds like you’re on the right track

  • @adventuresinhousesitting

    thank you! maybe i'll check out those bled shocks (to replace standard traxxas)

    • @JustScalin
      @JustScalin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really like the pro-lines, but to be honest the trx4 shocks are pretty reliable and good. People don’t read the manual and bleed them wrong which causes problems. They are designed to have a little air in them because they are an aeration shock

    • @adventuresinhousesitting
      @adventuresinhousesitting 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JustScalin good point :) I'll experiment with stock Traxxas shocks first.
      The Proline 12mm Big Bores seem to have better reviews than the standard bore Pro-Specs (leakage issues) which they recommend for TRX4. Did you have to do some mods for install?
      Weird question: Do you know where one might order Louise Rowdy's 1.9 unmounted? ERC is showing mounted only. I can get the Duratrax in North America but would be cool to have the Rowdy's in Canada! Thanks Joe!

    • @JustScalin
      @JustScalin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get my Rowdys from Club5Racing on eBay, although they are also Duratrax Showdowns or Fastrax Boxers.
      I run the Pro-Line Big Bore Scaler Shocks or the TRX4 standard ones. The Pro-Lines come with a longer rod end so they can be 92 or 97mm eye to eye. They have rarely ever leaked on me and are super plush and dependable, just take a bit of learning to bleed.

    I have a Redcat Gen 8 V2. I bought some 100 mm desert lizard shocks and need some input on set up. Would you suggest a heavier spring? I have 30wt oil. Truck is top heavy but pretty capable. Thanks for any information you can give.

    • @JustScalin
      @JustScalin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve got another video on tuning spring rates which should help with that. I’d say with such a long shock you want a thicker oil to really control how much the truck tips. It’ll always be top heavy with 100mm shocks but a bit more body control and practice and it’ll be a fun truck

    Wonder if these RC shocks could be used to mound a handheld cell phone gimble to a bicycle for streaming. Wonder if the small quick shocks would be absorbed. Or if some sort of rubber would be needed.

    • @JustScalin
