She’s a powerhouse. I’ve seen her live in Asheville, North Carolina and the sheriff’s department was there waiting to lock her up but she never performed “I’m an ass man”, which Senator Jesse Helms prohibited her from. I saw her in Boston and she performed Ass Man at the Roxbury. She brought the house down. Karen Finley is in a league of her own. No one can touch her as far as loudmouths going off, she’s better than all of them.
BTW- if you can find it, the whole performance of A Certain Level of Denial is absolutely brilliant. From women's rights and history, to LGBTQIA, to HIV/AIDS. I have it on CD. A must have!!

I first noticed Karen Finley in her role in Demme's "Philadelphia". Although brief, she conveyed an incredibly strong image. But this stuff that she does nowadays, um, I mean, I'm sympathetic with the "message", but art is no longer art when the message dominates over any sense of beauty (beauty meaning many things, some potentially "ugly"). I'm sorry, but what's the point of this? If you're trying to reach a broader audience, to convey meaning, to lift up (as Kandinsky might have said), then this is a total fail. And if you're not, then... what are you doing? Other than basically masturbating mentally on stage....
I think you misunderstood the termin of "art". In art schools they teach : "if you feel anything, even if you feel, that you are going to throw out - it's probably an art."

I am afraid this is another case of a talent less performance artist. I have seen many and Karen's material is always cliche and always presented by an over-the-top two dimensional character. It is easier to do a caricature of someone than to plumb the depths of someone real. I know some will say that is her intent but I maintain it is the lack of character awareness and her inability to do something of real substance. There is nothing new here and that she is still plying her "performance art" amazes me. This emperor definitely needs new clothes.
