    Thank you - I'm quite smitten by M. Sauvignac - who knew such simple lines could say so much?!

      Hello and you'll get no argument from me. I'm a great admirer of the less is more philosophy. And proof - if it was needed - that illustration is not necessarily about 'good' drawing and painting.

    Always been a Frederick Remington fan since we had a daughter in the early 1970's. That's when I became a children's illustrator lover. Thank you.

      pete beard I am astounded that your channel doesn’t have 100k+ subscribers - & that each video that you’ve taken the time and effort to - compile, assemble, and narrate doesn’t have thousands of views. Easily one of the best channels for anyone employed in the field or simply interested in the Art of Illustration! ~ Heartfelt Thanks!

      Hi again and thanks for your overwhelming praise. Naturally I'd be happy with more views & subscibers but at least most of my viewers are enthusiastic. And that counts for a lot.

    Wonderful stuff, I can see these styles still running through contemporary illustrated graphics.

    Great to see the last illustrator, creating amusing commercial compositions after beginning with less crafted drawing skills. There are some fun and witty images there by Savignac. Not to say that the other featured illustrators weren't fantastic in their skills. Thanks again for another step in my illustrator education. I love this channel.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello again and thanks for both your recent favourable comments. It's good to know that you and others are sticking with the channel. And regarding Savignac I used to use him as a teaching aid to demonstrate (maybe a bit pretentiously) for students that being an illustrator isn't necessarily about being able to draw in conventional terms. One of the many things I love about it.

      Thanks a lot for the comment. But I'm confused (it's my age no doubt). Are you referring to Dan Beard? If so I can't tally that with this particular video, although he's appearing in the new year. Or is it another Dan entirely?

    Thank You Pete, once again you inspire. Savignac was a revelation, so simple and so smart.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello again ... and there I was thinking there might be some negative comments about Savignac. His work and others in the same territory prove you don't need to be able to draw to be an illustrator. Thinking about it I might have to do a video on the successful 'bad' illustrators.

    Pete - Thank you so much for this wonderful series. It's impossible to thank you enough (!). So stimulating and eye-opening. Really important. And an education in itself. Please include Raymond Sheppard (1913-58)

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and many thanks for your immensely flattering comments. Made my day. And even more thanks for the suggestion of Raymond Sheppard. I'd never heard of him or seen his truly marvellous work before. He is a definite for inclusion somewhere - although technically just too young to qualify for the unsung heroes series (1910 is my rather spurious cut - off point.) But where there's a will there's a way and he is now officially on my bucket list. Thanks again.

      Thank you for this, Pete. Earlier illustrators that may interest are: John Henry Frederick Bacon (1868-1914) and Ralph St John Ainslie (1861-1908). Hope so (!)

      Hi and there's a yet another name I've been ignorant of. I've just had a quick look online and he's a good candidate.
      Don't despair if he doesn't appear for a while - The list of 'still to do' heroes just keeps getting longer. But he will be featured and many thanks for the suggestion.

    Excellent video! I love the UNSUNG HEROES OF ILLUSTRATION series! I have found many amazing artist (some of which are new favorites) all from your videos.
    One picky note as a headphone listener; I notice there is a high-pitched static noise in the background that plays constantly on top of the narration and music. This is an easy fix however; just run a "low-pass" filter on the audio portion of the video and that should do the trick. I'd say to set it to around 10,000-12,000k Hz. Or you can use the equalizer and just lower the levels of anything over 10,000-12,000k Hz.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi and thanks for your praise for my efforts. This sound thing is weird - another person (but only one) said the same thing about the noise. But I've got others to play it - and use headphones - and they don't hear it. I'd understand if it was just me because I am a bit deaf. Either way I'll do as you suggest on the next one uploaded and I'd be grateful if you woul let me know if the problem has gone

    Richardson is amazing. Do you have anything on Belle Silveira (1877-1930)? She was a lifelong friend of Richardson's, fellow illustrator, and colleague at Art Institute of Chicago. Thanks for the amazing series!

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and thanks for your appreciation. Sorry about the missing 't' from Johnston, and I had never heard of Silveira, who apparently is equally unknown as Silveira Gorski. A superficial search reveals little biography and alarmingly even less visual evidence - precisely 4 images. I'll investigate but I'm not confident. Either way thanks for the suggestion

    • @29008000
      @29008000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petebeard Thanks for the reply and info. I'm aware that Silveira did illustrations for literary magazines and small publishing shops. She was best known for her pencil. From 1906-1914, Silveira was married to W.O. Gorski, stepson of the great pianist Paderewski. Cheers

    Hi Pete... another enlightening and entertaining video, thanks. Will you be doing any specific videos about the early twenties through fifties American comic book artists down the road? Specifically Jack Kirby or John Romita Sr.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello John. They tend not to feature (although I'vr covered a few of the earlier ones) because most of them are born too late to qualify. (My cut-off is 1910). I must confess comics - as in superhero - I've generally steered clear of. My thinking was that they already have loads of fans who know more about the genre than me. But never say never as somebody smarter than me once said. Thanks for your continuing support and now I'm going to check out this Romita guy

      @@petebeard When I was young my mother took me to Marvel Comics headquarters in NYC and I got to meet John Romita Sr. who was the artist for my favorite comic book at the time, Spider-man. It was something that I will never forget. He has always been my favorite comic book artist. He is still alive, though I believe retired. His son, John Jr. has followed in his foot steps.
