The Thorn Birds mini-series really captured the soul of the story, and the cast was perfect. Colleen McCullough created an absolute classic.
I remember watching this when it debuted on 1983 on TV. I was 12 , and then checking out the book at the library. All these years later, and it's still my favorite book, and I still have a crush on Richard Chamberlain.
People I knew were glued to the TV during the mini series run. Back before cable our reception was terrible & we still watched.

I love little Meggie so much, it’s so unusual for me to like the protagonist the best, but she’s just so sweet and relatable. I love when she tells Ralph, “Father! I’m DYING!” so dramatically and he has to explain the stuff that Fee should have told her

I remember like it was yesterday when this series The Thorn Birds first came on TV. We were all GLUED to the TV show after show. It was excellent and so well done ! It was a very very popular mini series in the late 70s and early 80s. A++++
Rachel Ward was great in this, she should have won an award, great actress. My favorite.

@Foara Forty Sadly, it was probably typical of both the times and economic status.
And with shame, notice Frank put his head down as if he was humiliated…It was customary back in those and even in some cultures around to this day that don’t see girls as valuable. Pretty sad…

Very Irish. It's all about strong backs to work the fields. He's also below his wife & Frank when it comes to class. She was from a posh family of landowners & not Catholic. Found herself in the family way & was allowed to keep her baby by the head of the family. As soon as the grandmom died they shipped her off. Paddy was what she got. Very sad.
Sydney Penny has such an angelic face. I almost can't get passed the moment Father de Bricassart sees Meggie for the 1st time. Their soulful connection is palpable, so innocent. He'll be her protector & she, his delight.

I used to think that. But in reality he took her family's inheritance to advance his Church career when he could have passed it to the family, thus making Meggie a 'catch' for any suitor, ,instead of just a tenant on his property with the rest of the family.

Ciint Eastwood was deeply impressed by the acting ability of Sidney Penny in the role of Meggie in THE THORN BIRDS that he sought her out and cast her in the role of Megan in his film, PALE RIDER. As Meggie loved Father Ralph, Megan loved the Preacher. As Father Ralph always left so, too, did the Preacher. :)
In "Pale Rider" as "Megan" stole my mind on the spot.
It seems that was after saw this minisseries that Jean Delannoy invited her to play Saint Bernadette in "Bernadette", too.

Best mini series ever.... The Thorn Birds
Shame we did not see more from the actor who played Frank --- he was absolutely fantastic in this role. I always felt that Justine was very similar to Frank in her pain. Mare Winningham did not have much acting experience at this point but she knocked it out of the park here. I also thought you did a really good job playing Wendy in St.. Elmo's Fire
Absolutely brilliant acting by him and the entire crew!
Frank had a great story arc: brief, but unforgettable.

I'm unable to recall the name of the movie, but MW was great in a movie where she portrayed a speaking/hearing child/adult to deaf-mute parents.

When Mary was talking about Drogheda being hers and only hears and how well it was to remember that, you know she was cutting daggers at Father Ralph. It was like saying, "I know a part of you is upset that my family is here and that I may leave it to them, but I have plans".

Hermosa película con excelentes actores con una trama tan interesante y poco común en aquel tiempo que un sacerdote se enamorara y procrearan un hijo, que nunca renunció porque su ambición de ser un Papa no le permitió ser feliz. Esta excelente película no se compara a las películas románticas actualmente. Me trajo unos recuerdos inolvidables. Me causó mucha alegría ver sólo un resúmen.
Thank you, rayva1. I do not recall anyone suggesting that she did sense Father Ralph's attraction to her, although she probably did. During the love scene about two-thirds of the way through she recounted exactly what had happened, and again toward the end Jean Simmons, playing her mother, recalled the same. Watch the miniseries or read the novel.
It was totally innoncent but as Meggie grew and her beauty became more noticeable his heart couldnt lie to him anymore, it was real love for the both of them.
I looked forward to every episode of this series.

Isn’t it funny how this series was so popular and yet Colleen McCullough, the author, hated it. She said she was naive in selling her story for it to be made into a series and would never do it again. She said the storyline was changed so much, it actually changed the story itself. Colleen was a much loved Australian icon and her humour and infectious laugh, along with her wonderful sense of humour, endeared her to her many fans.
In that case I’m glad never read the book. It probably would have bored me to death.
That is so very common for authors whose work gets put into film form ... they lose all control over their own invention and watch it get turned into something they never would have written in a million years - then promoted all over hell-and-gone with their name on it. One book I know inside-out, The Beach by Alex Garland, (which I used for years as the base novel for a course I was teaching) was so absolutely mangled by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) that it was an entirely different story from the original, the ONLY legitimate tie to the original was the location (and a couple of specific plot points for timeline framing). Promoted as Alex Garland's The Beach, it was anything but Alex Garland's The Beach.

While I can understand McCullough being upset about the changes, thank heaven she sold her story and we were all the benefactors of such a magnificent series. I did read the book back in the 70's and yes, the story was good, but oh those lengthy, boring descriptions of the Australian landscape--I thought it would never end! This is one time where the miniseries is BETTER than the book!

I was smitten by this TV romance as a teen, but seeing this clip now - after the decades of truly horrendous revelations of widespread, organized sexual crimes against children and the constant cover-ups .... that initial meeting with Meggie hits a little different now!

I think it's sad. Barbara had a bad abortion young in life and was never able to have children. The crap women had to go through back then was terrifying.. I read it somewhere..

@@suzannechanon4962 Oh me too. I loved it when it came on TV years ago. Then i bought it when i was in my 20's. 4 VHS movie pack costed me 84 bucks. Worth every penny. I believe it's 9 or 11 hours long. Probably my favorite movie of all time. I've even read the book.
This young lady would wind having some career. Had to look up her name and found out that I had no idea this actress played the young Meggie. I recognized her face (she's 44 now) but not her name.
