I remember that day when we shot this scene. Sure was hot and musty in the building. I felt like I was taken back in time throughout the shooting of the movie. I often wondered what it was like for the people that were actually present at these real life events. Must have been inspiring, powerful and yet sad to witness. I smudged and prayed daily during the making of this movie to honor those that were lost during the massacre.

This makes me feel so many emotions it's unbelievable. I am a Native indigenous Woman from Qualla Nation in Cherokee N.C. set deep in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. I want everyone to realize that we really all belong to one race. The human race. Yes we are of different colors, different cultures, different backgrounds.....But all our blood bleeds red. I hate what happened to my people!! Believe Me. It makes me cry and wonder what would life be like now? I guess we'll never know, but what we can do is coexist with one another with respect and dignity. I pray to the higher power for peace. I would love to see the day when someone stops calling us savages. I would also love to see the day when natives realize that not all white people are bad! This is my prayer!! wado Native Pride our Spirit has never died! ✌👯

Most white people I know either feel kinda bad about the past but are mostly neutral and just say "well, it's just an ugly part of history", and others feel their sympathy a bit deeper. A lot of Americans don’t bat an eye to the native americans. Whenever someone acknowledges us it makes us smile, because so many times do we feel we have no voice on our reservations. Not only is it the government working against us, it’s our own people at times too. Sitting Bull was shot by a indian police, along with his son being killed right after. To this day, corruption reigns on our reservations. Standing Rock is where i live, and we still struggle when we don’t have to, for the benefit of those who take money instead of making changes for our people.

All cultures and peoples have sinned.

    • @moziboy75
      @moziboy75 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Marc I agree with everything he says but unlike natives who hold true to customs and protocols of victor and vanquished....the colonialist method was through deceit and misinterpretation.
People's with no written language hold belief systems to a point where someone 1000 years ago will hear chants and prayers that are recognisable if not word for word.
So this is the situation that every human in this system knows the consequences of actions and follows through with the appropriate role of vanquished or victor.
Colonialists on the other hand had a different system that was confusing to native people. They lied, cheated and killed for land, it is what it is, every culture has gone through the same through history.
A fault on their behalf on our people from NZ is they made a treaty that intentionally misled the chiefs who were signing.
It is this reason we are able to fight for land wrongfully taken.
These are the interpretations of both sides of the coin.
I have explained my viewpoint not to dominate my outlook but to simply let you know, I understand your point of view and agree with most of it but want you to see mine....cheers brother!

I am danish decent, born and raised in Minnesota, and have since I can remember felt deep in my heart a respect and a connection with the Lakota. when I was in my teens I read Bury my heart at wounded knee, and felt sad and ashamed in my heart to read what the europeans did to the natives of this country. playing them against each other, cheating them and deceiving them. infecting them with disease they had no natural resilience too. from that book I keep remembering one passage. "The white man made many many promises. He kept but one, he promised to take our land ... and he took it." Many times I have wished that I was born Lakota, even with all the injustice heaped upon them, how proud I would feel to be a part of that noble people.

Great post, Patrick. I spent a couple years in Minnesota in college and one of my good friends with Swedish ancestry said something similar that made me thing. Interesting, he eventually moved his family back to his ancestral land Sweden, obviously part for practical reasons like job healthcare and college (it's free there for his kids) but more important, he told me it was more because of sense of justice. His family and people's natural home is in Europe, not in lands like Minnesota taken from the native Americans (Minnesota is a native American term after all!). An old friend in Wisconsin with German ancestry did same thing moving his family to Germany after 4 generations in US. I think there's a bigger movement of more and more Americans with European ancestry doing this, moving back to their ancestral lands in Europe. And I think it's ultimately a good thing, as the original peoples of North America (this includes Latinos who are overwhelmingly with native American blood, and IMHO African-Americans who were brought here against their will and became native to this land disconnected from their roots) will once again have title to the North American lands. P.S. Denmark is a beautiful country so if you wind up going same route as my friends who moved back to their European homelands, you'll be moving to one of the world's most beautiful countries!

It is unlikely. The Native Americans were not a monolithic people. Each tribe and nation considered itself distinct and fought against one another. For example, the Lakota were expelled from Minnesota by the Ojibwe. And the Lakota expelled many other tribes from the Dakotas. Even Sitting Bull was murdered by other Native Americans when they came to arrest him on behalf of the US government.

I am very pleased with most of these comments. It warms my heart to hear people understand what happened to my anseters. Most kids in my school do not understand and it fills my with anger as I desperately try to explain to them, their minds are corrupt for their parents tell them one thing when it's really another. I see that they look down at me when I walk through the halls, they try to tell me that I am not who I say I am. And when we learn about how my people were actually treated they try to say that it really wasn't all that bad, and give an example of what Hitler did to that Jews. Yes the Jews were treated terrible, and I am in tears just reading about it, but they were helped out and now they live and free men and women. The Natives have been getting tormented by the government ever since the whites created a government, but you never here stories in the news paper about these acts of genocide, that are randomly inflicted just because we are Native. You don't here about how the government is trying to make it so the Navajo people have even less land yo live on, and just because they want to build a stupid pipe to transfer water. They say we live in a society that is 'color blind' but are we really color blind? If we are than why are we still using racist slurs for professional sports names. Such as the Redskins, you don't see a team calling themselves the Blackskins because that is considered being the ultimate racist. If you bully a black person all hell brakes lose but what about the many other ethnic groups living in America, so apparently to the white man its ok to bully an Asian or a Native because it's not "technically" being racist. White have their logic upside down and need to open their eyes to what really happens around them, if that is too much to ask.

Saquora Romero-Cannon They have been told so to believe that our spiritualism is wicked, like ISIS and that it should have been banned. They will tell you that you are fortunate as no one else has land set aside for them. They will tell you that you receive free money from the government just by being NDN. All of these things are either distortions or lies. The reservations are prisons where non-Native perpetuate crimes with impunity. The land desecrated by outsiders to make it poisonous to all that live there. Never in my life did I ever receive "free money" from anyone. They tell us the past is the past while they live in luxury from a legacy that was at our expense. They will never understand you, and if you show friendship to them and try to explain it, most will despise you for it. In a world where only the individual matters and what material things you can buy. Where the lie is the truth and the truth is a lie. But do not let it devour you. Remember who *you* are, and know that you should not burden your heart with their hate or you shall become one of them and suffer their fate. They will burn in the fires that they have built.

Apparently the so called pilgrim fathers (the Puritanism) left Britai not because they were being persecuted but through their intolerance of the New concepts of Christianity like Methodism Evangelical thinking. They came to American colonies to cause havoc to their. Own and also to the indigenous peoples. It is obvious that concept of the land of the free is spurious to say the least. They did an excellent job of attempting to destroy the whole of the Indian nations but you are not alone there those have fought for your rights and others in other parts of the world who have seen the hypocrisy of the European usurper ie white Americans. I am ashamed that my forebears did this and I will state that the Indians did not entirely perish at Wounds knee to use an obvious example keep informing people and eventually Justice will prevail !

Saquora Romero-Cannon Agreed. The Native People need to stand up and be vocal as bad medicine is flowing across this Land from the South, making false claims and spreading lies that the spirit of their ancestors walk this land that is the Continental USA. I am speaking of the latino and their La Raza banner. Though many Native Brothers and Sisters where taken by the Spanish to Mexico and the Caribbean to serve as slaves and concubines, those who call themselves latino and fly the La Raza flag make no claim to this. They are mostly Aztec or Mayan, two cultures that bore no historical claim to this ancestral land. A large number of latino actually have no indigenous Amer-Indian DNA being mostly Hispanic with Berber or sub-Saharan African. Brazilians, who are mostly Portuguese decent do not call themselves latino. The word latino is a PC term, not a race. It follows inline with the Mexican Government's forced practice of "mestizo" to promote Mexican unity and pride. Another PC term. Latino's use correlates with the principles of the Plan of San Diego (Texas) and the Plan of Aztlan, thus why it began its use in the mid 20th century.
I say to you, Native Brothers and Sisters. Your voice, your language, your culture, your history is being purposefully used to serve the purpose of European descendants who are foreign to this Land who seek to colonize it for their own. Get vocal. Form a group and make demands that this bad medicine be stopped. Send a representative to Congress to address this. Geronimo hated the Mexican. Many Southwestern Nations fought against the Mexicans in the Mexican-American War. Yes, the White Man's Government did terrible things, but do you not see how Mexico and other Central American nations have treated their indigenous peoples and how that has not changed? That is coming here. As the La Raza drum beats louder, yours grows quieter.

From England we have have been centuries slow and ignorant to understand the Turtle Islanders plight though some have known and were silenced by those who do not like truth. That truth has long been buried but now we are waking up and have moved to prevent further centralised power structures ruling us in future, though it is a slow fight to achieve that.
When i was young i was taught all the lies you still yet see in media here, propaganda by governments and nations across the world and waking up to the truth for us was hard, the truth haters have held sway here for many centuries. Many of us now know the truth, and we support you in your struggles in Dakota and everywhere you have been incarcerated and subjugated.
It was an Irish friend of mine who first opened my eyes, and i am eternally grateful to her for that.
Most of all we support you in spirit and in endeavor and also to prevent the continuation of subjugation of our spirit here in England where we are slowly awakening to the history of our own crushed but continuing struggles.

How did you get Liberalism from that. I'm far from being a libtard. I was commenting to johny (You, meaning johny five). To read more about native history and quit playing the victim card. Nice knee jerk reaction though...Andy

those who share and remember and teach, I thank you. I wish I had been givien the chance to know my people and their ways from birth, but I was sent to a white family and have only recently returned to my birth mother. I know now I am of the Thunders and Le Boux Lakota. I will learn and I will tech my children what I learn. Our ways will not die and will not be forgotten.

Powerful words spoken by powerful actors, the rising out of dark oppression and dominance North American Indians lived in harmony with nature and the land and so to take away their land and freedom was a slow death of the feminine energies. This was also done in Ireland in the same brutal ways but somehow the culture, norms and values of both nations survived and this is victory and tryunpth of the grat spirit that moves through us all.

Two great leaders speaking powerfully and poignantly. This scene brings tears to my eyes....pride, sadness, inspiration. I am presently reading Utley's great biography of Sitting Bull, The Lance and the Shield; and I visited both places this summer where Sitting Bull might be buried, as well as Chief Joseph's surrender site. Last summer, we went to Wounded Knee. All of this enriches my experience when watching this powerful scene. Thanks for sharing it! Hoka hey!

I cried as Red Cloud Spoke, the Indians were patient to put up withe lies and duplicity of these treaties and the actions of the Just in case one person does not know . The American government. Sent through army agents the Small pox impregnated blankets to the Indian nations. You can imagine what happened next. Genocide which is still going on now not only the native Americans but other people as well

Dylan, your decision to serve is one of honor for your country. Many have served and done to with honor, and you deserve our respect. Your feelings about what took place in the past is also honorable. Many today, who know and understand what You do today, also feel the same way, but continue to serve, because it is Our country, that we are serving, not someone else's idea of who's country it is, or the government. Thank you, brother, for serving us all.

25 years ago, while In Arizona On the Apache reservation I was asked What tribe I was from, I said I'm Irish, German! We both had a short prayer, thanked each other for the conversation, and time shared, then he said "it's not your blood - it's your belief!" CHI MEGWICH. Guide me, great spirit, God
