I've been working on bikes for 50+ years and I have seen so many 'experts' on TH-cam but you sir are one of the very very few I would trust with my bike. Great job and perfect clarity in the video.
best way.. I've spent a lot of money on bike services over the years from various recommended experts and it's never been that good. Always alright, but never exceptional.
Bikespeeds!!!! As usual, another awesome episode. The way you present your technical expertise is amazing and it reflects how you enjoy working on these bikes whether they are old or new, your standards are the same. Thank you for continuing to inspire aspiring mechanic like me, much appreciated.
Really great service. Nothing better than a steel bike with a 105 drivetrain!! Thanks Lee/Simon another terrific job to make this bike safe and ready to ride.
Thanks, i enjoyed the video, and enjoyed studying a more recent British steel frame bike...i remember being intruiged by Ribble Bikes from their large adverts in Cycling Weekly back in the late 80s/90s...they were a staple of the british road bike scene back then. Cheers!
Good advice on greasing the threads of brake pad retention bolts. I had a used bike that had them stuck in there and the bolt head rounded out so I had to use an extractor to get it out.
Hello Lee and Simon, as always a very nice job, and an entertaining video. I once again learned that it’s important to clean my mounain bike thoroughly after a mud tour on order to prevent wore on chain and other components. I send you many greetings and hugs from Germany! 👍👋🌞🍀
Ahh Ribble, first thing I did when I got my CGR 725 (gravel version of this bike) was replace the stem and handlebars, the stock "level" parts seem a bit naff. The torque settings on the bike were absolutely all over the place when I got mine from the box as well, had to pretty much go over every single threaded interface and give it a good double check.
Always a good idea to use a torque wrench even on AL components like the stem cap. I once stripped out threads on some AL components because I didn't... Woops
I appreciate you for leaving the cables. Some people figure they can grab some fast labor time always making people change that out and I seriously appreciate anyone who doesn't let the perfect be the enemy of the good, and good spotting on that bad stem! I've found the pavement that way myself! It's such an easy mistake to make too, all you have to do is worry your bars are loose and who isn't worried their bars are loose? Trust the torque wrench and use the spec friends!
11:28 the threads on that pivot - Yes. Not so sure about greasing the pivot itself. If someone cleans the bike with a pressure washer that grease is just waiting to get on the pads and ruin them
Main message? If you’re gonna do your own maintenance…. Get a torque wrench! Even just a low range one for headset/ stem and seatpost so you can do your own adjustments safely
I love the work of this channel. I’ve seen nearly every vid posted and always happy to see new uploads. But don’t know why it really bugs me that nothing is ever rinsed off with clean water. The grimy soap is only always wiped away. 😅 maybe it’s just a me thing. Love the channel.
Great transformation. When I got my ribble road bike in a box it had no instructions about putting the bars on the stem. Luckily I always do a star pattern, but you can see how this can easily happen
Another great video, thank you! I've learned a lot about bike presentation from your videos and have incorporated it into my own bike maintenance. Just a quick question, though... I've noticed we never see you greasing the seat post. Having spent some hours of my life extracting three or four stuck seat posts over the years, I'm well aware that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and I make a point of regularly applying copper grease to any aluminium to steel interface, including the seat post. Do you do this off camera or is it not a thing you do?
This is not something we do, I agree when it can be a problem it really can be but it isn’t the most common fault and we only do it when we’re asked, it’s a value for money Decision to keep our pricing competitive and some things don’t make the cut, thanks for your support 🧡
I would love to see a video explaining how you gained the knowledge you have on working on all these different bikes. Were you an apprentice somewhere? Did you go to school for this? Thanks!
Good educational vid Lee and Simon. 👍. So many folk tighten incorrectly on metal bikes ……….case in point here ………and the potential consequences………. Invest in a torque wrench viewers and learn how to use it properly ……..excellent for self preservation 😁 BBB BTL-73 or similar is a good start point.
Hello sir, Marcus from Germany here. Nice video and brilliant observation on the broken stem. Concerning lubricants, do you have any experience with using copper grease on aluminium components? Some people say, this combination will result in corrosion.
Holy moly! Good thing you had the bike in for service and noticed the cracked stem cover or a really nasty accident could very easily have been the consequence. Judging from the minimal wear of the chainrings you replaced is this bike, or at least the components, more or less brand new I wonder?
Head bearings? Also if the stem was so over tightened as to damage the cap are you 100% confident the handle bars are ok? Personally id change the stem and bars , would also give an opportunity to regrease head bearings
Gotta love a steel bike and that paint job's mint. Are they the old Lotus colours on purpose do you know ? Good top on the stem, I had a carbon one go once as I was doing 0 mph and that was scary enough.
Just found your channel, great content. I’m a relative newbie to bike maintenance and have just bought a Ribble CGR, what is the proper angle for the handlebar vs stem? Is the top of the V meant to align with the top of the E? Or is it purely down to fit?
I’m a bit of a fanatic about keeping my drive line clean and you inspired me to get an ultrasonic cleaner! I hot wax my chains in a small crock pot using a mixture of paraffin wax, beeswax, commercial chain lube, PTFE and (my secret ingredient) Boeshield T-9. Everything stays super clean! I started using the ultrasonic cleaner on the chains - before putting them in the hot wax mixture. I’m curious about the solution you use, the amount of time you run the cleaner for, and whether or not you use any heating functions.
I always hope I can get away with just the chain, then end up changing the lot. I could probably do a couple of chains to a cassette if I actually checked the wear from time to time.
If the chain's only worn to 0.5% and the cassette looks good, I wouldn't bother. Keeping on top of worn out chains is a good way to keep the cassette going for much longer.
I gave up on trying to keep my brakes silent. I changed the disc and pads, cleaned everything before installing them and after 2 rides it whistles already 🤷🏻♂️
This bike hadn’t had a lot of ware , you weren’t kidding. It looked new apart from some oil , grim build up . ( with I have to clean off after every ride 200 to 600 k)
The videos are nicely done, what I do not agree with is the rear derailleur going into the ultrasonic cleaner, and after all that lubing you still leave the derailleur arm and pivot sping dry on the inside (tha arm will seize in place due to corrosion in the near future) also can not understand why you keep ignoring a simple headset service... All of these fancy greases, and unnecessary time waisting component removals and these 2 things are just plain wrong..
I think I might do a video of me using a crappy multitool and no torque wrench on my knackered old carrerra , hours of endless pain frustration and dangerous practice .. I really must invest….

watchin from the Philippines at 2am, been watchin for months now and this channel taught me a lot over time and i love the vids
That’s awesome! Enjoy the videos and thanks for joining us 🧡🇵🇭
Clean hands, even when dismantling. This is magic in action...
Once again, you show how your workshop is a real SPA for bicycles. It's a delight to watch these videos. Abraço.
Very very kind thank you🧡
One thing watching these bike service channels, the inconsistency in quality and knowledge
That's one beautiful bike, love it!
I've never understood why people don't bother to clean their expensive bikes. 20 minutes a week can save hundreds in repairs and replacement.

great workmanship… your work store is spotless

Very refreshing and unique now! Thanks from both of us 🧡

Thanks just subscribed. Learnt a few things in that video. Never too old to learn new tricks of the trade. 😊
Thanks for the support!🧡
When you put the rear derailleur in the ultrasonic cleaner, it removes the grease from the inside
@pedrofreire2303 I visit this channel every couple of months to put this exact comment, but never get any results or reactions xD
Never known the derailleur springs to get contaminated on high end mechs!

Thanks Bob we really do appreciate your support🧡
well done for spotting the broken faceplate 👍 surprised ribble sold you one separately & didn't have to buy complete stem 😊
Bet it was still £5 postage though 😞
That was a new stem! We could only find it complete 🧡
Always a good idea to use a torque wrench even on AL components like the stem cap. I once stripped out threads on some AL components because I didn't... Woops
To be technically correct, chains do not stretch! they elongate due to wear in the pins & bushes.
There still longer than they started which ever you call it

Yup, just gotta put the tiniest amount of grease on the thread to stop it seizing but not so much as to risk contaminating the pads.
beautiful steel frame that 🙂

I'd be tempted to replace bars as you cant be sure they haven't been damaged by the stem.
