1. England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. England became a unified state in the 10th century, and since the Age of Discovery, which began during the 15th century, has had a significant cultural and legal impact on the wider world. The English language, the Anglican Church, and English law - the basis for the common law legal systems of many other countries around the world - developed in England, and the country's parliamentary system of government has been widely adopted by other nations.
2. The Kingdom of England-which after 1535 included Wales-ceased being a separate sovereign state on 1 May 1707, when the Acts of Union put into effect the terms agreed in the Treaty of Union the previous year, resulting in a political union with the Kingdom of Scotland to create the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1801, Great Britain was united with the Kingdom of Ireland through another Act of Union to become the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1922 the Irish Free State seceded from the United Kingdom, leading to the latter being renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
3. The Industrial Revolution began in 18th-century England, transforming its society into the world's first industrialised nation.
4. The wonderful city London has not always had this name. In the past it has been called Londonium, Ludenwic, and Ludenburg. It is an ancient name, attested already in the first century AD in its latinised form. It’s most likely of Celtic origin, meaning ‘place that floods periodically’, probably due to the Thames river. Today London doesn’t just refer to the actual city, which is just a small region of less than 10.000 people, which still retains its medieval boundaries. Since at least the 19th century, "London" has also referred to the metropolis around this core, the Greater London area, with a population of almost 9 million.
5. In 1647, Christmas was abolished by the English Parliament. No-one was allowed to celebrate!
6. 70% of the land in England is still owned by 1% of the population, largely descended from William the Conqueror’s army.
7. The oldest unbroken alliance in the world is between England and Portugal dating back to 1373.

Well, I've looked into it. Legally, there's no legally defined term to describe what Northern Ireland actually is. I'm guessing this is on purpose, given the many problems this partition has caused in the past. It's described as a country, province or region alternately. In actuality, Northern Ireland has its own government and parliament, just like the other 3 countries, so it is a de facto country. The fact is no matter what you call it, you run the risk of offending someone.
Northern Ireland is a province and Wales is a principality, but all are regarded as separate countries in some areas such as various sports.

If you think England is another word for the UK, you weren't paying attention. The UK includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
