    Having been in a humvee and an MRAP, that were hit by IED's. The Humvee was a violent burning explosion, and (2) two of the four, in the humvee were KIA. The MRAP felt like tire broke off and no one was hurt. In fact everyone exited the MRAP and got into another vehicle. It took too long for an MRAP type vehicle to be deployed in the field and adding up armor to the humvee did nothing for IED's. Too many good people died or were badly burned in the humvee.

    As a child the original vehicles in South Africa facsinated me because of their sheer size and later they developed the Mamba, the template for many modern mraps ,some of which patrolled our area seeing we lived on a military base. Never thought they would be used so widely.

    I like MRAP vehicles, had friends saved by them and I spent time in them my self in 2012 in Afghanistan, they do protect and have saved thousands of lives, but as the Soldiers , Marines, Sailors, and Air Men, may have survived the TBI has gone up cause you still get a big jolt from hell in side them. Also it's not the way to win that type of war. What happen to "one tribe at a time". You take away personal interaction with the local populous and tank yourself up so people can't talk to you. Plus you put yourself way up high which with body language means your dominant over them. When I was in Iraq in 2004 we didn't have up armor Humvee's. And we did foot Patrols and talked with the people and the were turning people over to us. A year later I checked back in and the guys that relieved us just stayed in there up armor Humvee's and they quit turning people in and the guys weren't as safe. So it is a give or take thing stay safe and u personal and Limited communication. cant finish 😔

      Brian Wilkes That is a good insight. Definitely need to show we are just people too there to help not dominate.

      I see your point. However back when our troops would still do foot patrols they used to get killed by IEDs and ambushes like flies. It's way too dangerous when the enemy fights the way he does using guerrilla tactics. Thank you for your service.

      How about the MATVs? I'd like to know your thoughts on those, seeing as though it's a balance between the two extremes. Also, troops don't dismount anymore? What a shame that is.

    A son-in-law was the top gunner on one of these in one of the desert wars. He told me that most casualties were head shots to the top gunner when he had to lean forward for a loading or mechanical issue. He also said the locals zigged in and out of the convoy, on their phone, to their homies up on the high ground. And they couldn't do squat about the spotters. Rules of engagement lose lives and wars.

    I was rolling in this type of vehicle as a South African infantryman in the 1980's... waaay before Iraq and Afghanistan.
    I'm glad this type of vehicle is keeping a younger generation of soldier safe...gladdens my heart..but get the facts right.
    The actual developmental history of these vehicles is actually extremely interesting.

    Some might be concerned about the additional height (standing out more?). However, there were similar fears when it came to the US M-60 tank vs Soviet armor (lower profile). Yet the Israelis found the taller profile was an advantage in that ten Soviet provided tanks were destroyed before an Israeli tank even sustained a hit (non-lethal). This just an observation. Remember that WWII the deadliest tanks in the Wehrmacht were turret less: Hetzers, Stugs and Jagdpanzers.

    Basically a exact newer copy of South African Casspir. Its an established fact that South African manufacturers pioneered the mine-resistant vehicle to survive ambush tactics in the country’s border regions. The Casspir was build in 1979 for the South African Police service on the border with Angola and South West Africa. The Casspir was the first MRAP and decades ahead of anything. The design originated in the 1970s with vehicles such as the iconic Casspir used extensively during the South African Border War" Also the Casspir had the first V shaped hull to be used in the border war against the Russians, Cubans, Angola Mpla and Swapo communist terrs. South Africa actually fought the Russian and communism for 23 years.

    MRAP - a fancy new term for a breed of vehicles used in South Africa since the 60's. The SADF (South African Defence Force) utilized models called the Buffel and the Ratel. The Police Counter-Insurgency Unit (KOEVOET) used the Caspir. Why the US Military re-invented the wheel by introducing the inferior Humvee is a mystery and a disgrace due to many of the fallen. Why not simply copy battle-tested technology? And here it is in all it's glory; almost 40 years later.

      What ?
      It's not even the same vehicle !
      I mean. The Humvee is a multi purpose transport vehicle.
      While that truck has been made to transport troops in insurgency zones (is that the name ? oo)
      Thanks to its protection against mines and traps.
      It would be way too expensive to replace the Humvee while it's still useful.

    Production stopped? Bullshit. There are like 5 different MRAP families (M-ATV, Caiman, Maxxpro, Cougar, and another one) used by the military. Sure, maybe the Maxxpro stopped production, but the M-ATV is still getting made I bet, the Cougar is being freshly adopted by units, and that other one is in the testing and adoption phase. In addition, I hope people realize that there is more than one type of MRAP being used, and at least 2 of the commonly used MRAPs are American made (M-ATV is out of Oshkosh ohio, Maxxpro is made by navistar defense, which operates somewhere in the west of the US)

    I like matv's and it is a real shame they don't dismount any more my first tour was straight leg light infantry. But it is we as U.S. Citizens don't stomach well the thought of casualties. We were doing good I think when you look at other conflicts we have been in we have lost just as much in one battle in WW2 Korea and Vietnam. So I think we were doing good on our casualty rate it sucks to lose friend trust me I know😭 but it is war and if you think we can go to war and not lose anyone you're naïve

      S. Africa made the original design, but it was improved upon for the combat conditions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
      The V-Hull, gunners turret were the differences between the original and the upgraded RG-31, I know I went to school in Bagram for a week when they 1st started fielding them in theater.

    • @FastestGunNJ
      @FastestGunNJ 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, to an extent. It also depends on what kind of round impacts the vehicle. The MRAPs aren't intended to be indestructible, they're made to save the crew inside.

    • @FastestGunNJ
      @FastestGunNJ 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +5 Perservance You didn't quite understand what I was getting at. Allow me to rephrase, please. One cannot make an indestructible vehicle on sensible terms. The best the US military and the engineers at Oshkosh can do is try and protect American lives.

      Actually HMMVs are already starting to be retired. They're going to be replaced with a vehicle that's still being tested that's basically a smaller version of the MRAP, since IED protection is now a priority. They don't even send HMMVs outside the wire anymore because they're too unprotected.

      For the US and Russia fielding MRAP's is a relatively very new thing. I have to say, on looks alone, the ruskies win the MRAP game, the "Punisher" is a mean and sexy looking vehicle, looks like a Russian Batmobile.:

      Sort of yes and no. The first MRAPS to see combat where used by Rhodesia, But they where built by South Africa. All so i would not call them MRAPs, more a proto-MRAP with the first proper MRAP being the buffle.
