  • Watch a compilation of a high speed journey from Boston to New York on Amtrak's fastest train - the Acela Express.
    It was Acela Express 2153 which departs Boston South Station at 06:00 am.
    The main stops of the train were Boston, Providence, New Haven, Stamford and New York City. The same train continued to Washington DC, but I got off at New York.
    It was an amazing experience travelling on this train. Its top speed is supposed to be 150 mph (241 kmph). I used the GPS speedometer app throughout the train and got the speed upto 148 mph (238 kmph).
    It cannot go at high speed throughout the journey due to restrictions on curves and bridges, and commuter rail traffic as well.
    There was a region while passing through the state of Connecticut which was very scenic as the tracks were right beside the coast and the sea could be seen quite often.
    The entrance to New York was also quite fabulous as we curved over the Hell Gate Bridge.
    The interiors of the train were very comfortable (2x2 seating).
    There was free Wi-Fi and the connection was very good.
    There was a Cafe Car also and the washrooms were very neat and spacious.
    Overall it was a great journey between 2 of the main cities of North America.
    The second part of the journey done on the next day from New York to Washington DC can be seen by clicking on the following link :

      Terry, I wanted to take Amtrak from Dallas to San Diego (41+ hours) and it's over $800 one way for two people. I can fly round trip for around 800-1,000. Why so expensive?

    • @BusterMcT
      @BusterMcT 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Greetings CP, Usually, when you receive prices in that range you may be reserving seats at the last minute; or, during busier times of travel like holidays. I just checked dates next month and I saw some fares in $400.00 round trip range per person.
      When you travel by train it is at a more leisurely pace. I would not expect the train to exceed 79mpr throughout the trip.
      As you travel there are train crews on board that service the coach cars, lounges, dining cars and sleeping cars. There is some expense to operating that length of time that all goes into pricing out the tickets.
      There is a time to fly and a time to ride the rails. If you are looking to travel at the more leisurely pace described the train may be for you. You'll meet neat people while dining and relaxing in the lounge cars. You could enjoy a book or load up the tablet with a bunch of movies you'd like to see.
      If speed is of the essence you may want to pay the premium for the 3-hour trip to get there fast.
      Whatever you decide I hope you have a safe and enjoyable journey.

    I was recently in Austria and rode their high speed train (ÖBB railjet) between Vienna and St Anton. It reached speeds of 150mph and completed the journey in nearly half the time of the intercity trains I had ridden long ago. What I find unique is rather than EMU or permanently connected trainset like acela, railjet consisted of 7 carriages pulled/pushed by a Siemens Sprinter locomotive.

    "Some suburbs of New York", at 24:30, are in Queens, which is part of the City. The suburbs are places outside of the City. From New Haven south Amtrak uses MetroNorth tracks, which are commuter trains into Grand Central Terminal. South of New Rochelle, NY, Amtrak trains split off along the route, which you describe as the "outskirts" of New York. Freights do not use the MetroNorth tracks.
    Amtrak goes into Penn Station. For many years some Amtrak trains went into Grand Central, including trains coming down the Hudson, but those trains now switch tracks in the Bronx and also head into Penn Station.

      Fifty years ago, travel on the Atlantic Coast Line was very good. Spacious seats, great legroom. Today's AMTRAK can't match the comfort of the old coaches from the past. Trains are still fun to ride; sometimes faster (planes) does not mean better experience.

    • @JonathanFritz3757
      @JonathanFritz3757 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gotta admit, those flying machines are groovy, except when they don't have enough legroom or the seat isn't wide enough. I'm not a big person, but taking the train will get me from downtown to downtown, and no TSA means we can all board without additional stress. Yes, security is an issue with some people, but I've learned that boarding security is kept to a minimum in some European countries.

    From Boston to NY city in less than 4 hours, not bad.
    I once took an Amtrak train (not an Acela) from Norfolk VA to Framingham MA in roughly 7 hours. Half the time it would take by car. Traveling by train was nice. I find the ACELA similar beautiful as the TGV and by no means crap, although not quite as fast but it is based on the TGV. A 150 mph is not bad at all, the slower highspeed trains in both Europe and Japan also don´t exceed a 150 or 155 mph and even the TGV which does 200 mph on some highspeed lines actually only do a 125 on most lines in France. In Scandinavia and the U.K. trains don´t do much more than 125 either.

    • @altavelmcnamara

      Martin Sorensen Look on Paris - Bordeaux or Paris - Strasbourg routes. The average speed is about 270km/h! The Acela’s average speed is only about 110km/h, which is veeery slow.

    • @1cmman
      @1cmman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes those are highspeed routes but I saw a map showing that on most train lines in France overall the TGV only do a 125 because those aren´t highspeed lines.

    Is train on any special tracks? Seemed very smooth! And apparently punctual like the Japanese trains?

      Amtrak doesn't have dedicated high-speed lines. They use the long established route known as the North-East Corridor, which dates back to the early days of the previous century. It is the one railway line Amtrak actually owns so freight trains are not so frequent nor heavy, as the overhead power lines prohibit the use of tall freight wagons, or double-stacked containers for that matter, which are usually the heaviest. This means track doesn't wear out so quickly so it retains its smooth-running capabilities longer. Regrettably, Amtrak isn't as punctual as the Japanese and most European HS networks. Main cause for this are the freight railroads who prioritize a highly profitable freight over their lines over Amtrak and thus hand Amtrak massive delays on a daily basis :-\

    • @frankcurtis6179
      @frankcurtis6179 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lori K.: As far as I could see from the video it's welded track on concrete sleepers. The same as we have on almost our railways here in the UK and that's why all our intercity trains can trave; at 125 mph and give a smooth ride.

    That was good video on how it feels to ride an Acela train! Loved the GPS smartphone speed app giving MPH! The train is doing well at 140+ MPH. Going though the curve where it slowed down to near 110 mph it would of been nice to see the tilt action taking place. Having the camera pointing down the aisle so it takes in the outside view from both sides would work nicely. The curve didn't seem to affect the cabin at all. Its fine for the train to gently roll into and out of a curve just as long as its not sudden. It seems like the tilt could compensate for lateral force on the people without slowing down, unless it was at full normal tilt the way it was doing it.

    Thanks for posting! The amount of views so far (83.5K in 4 months) speaks to the popularity of HSR. We've got to make NEC faster. Perhaps spin off Acela so that it can raise its own money and lay dedicated tracks. Looking forward to Texas and California projects in the next ten years. Also Florida, which is very successful so far even though not a true HSR..

    • @JonathanFritz3757
      @JonathanFritz3757 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read somewhere that the future of HSR in the U.S. most likely will be an assortment of HSR corridors scattered throughout the country, such as Boston-NYC-Washington, Washington-Charlotte-Atlanta, Dallas / Fort Worth-Houston, Seattle-Vancouver, B.C., to name a few. These regional systems would primarily serve their local regions and connect to the national rail system. It's the beginning moving forward to a complete national HSR system somewhere later in time. Progress takes time, especially in a republic.

    When I rode this line in the '60's and '70's. the trains from Boston would have to switch from diesel power to electricity at New Haven, requiring a switch of engines. This one seems to be something of an improvement, but it's really the tracks that are the problem... "Infrastructure" seems to be the word of the day.

  • @danburch9989
    @danburch9989 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    If trains concentrated on passengers as much as they do freight, it would be profitable for all but cross country travel over about 600 miles (flying becomes faster at that point). When you consider that you have to be at the airport up to 2 hrs before flight time, your train would almost be halfway to NYC from Boston before the airplane even takes off. The problem is rails are mostly single track and not easily modified. Amtrak use to run from LA to Jacksonville FL. But when Katrina went through NO, they discontinued service from NO to Jax.

    Yes people may say that trains in Europe and else where are faster but they spent huge amounts of money on dedicated lines. We in the UK are just catching up with HS2 if it ever gets built.

    What is the distance, and how much did it cost?
    I've seen it at Newark when I've been in the States, but have never ridden on it.
    The fastest I've done on rail is 300 km/h (186 m.p.h.) near Paris, and once you're up to speed it doesn't actually feel that fast.

      It's about 150 mph, though it will run slower then that most of the time. Still quite quick though.

    From the current AMTRAK NER Schedule: Acela #2151-->3hrs ,46min to NYC. NER #95-->4hrs, 14min to NYC. For me. ain't enough time difference to justify the extra fare.

    The Acela train actually goes pretty fast between Boston and Providence....but especially once it gets into Connecticut it has to slow down significantly because the infrastructure is just not up too it....bridges and tracks. However, it's still the best way to get from Boston to NY as it goes from city center to city center.

    Beautiful trip, and you captured it well. Good to see that the train seemed to average over 100 MPH. I hope they start thinking about how to protect the tracks next to the coast from sea level rise.

    The big difference here in contrast to most HST in Europe is the fact that most of the line between NYC and Boston still follows the route of the old 19th century New York, New Haven, and Hartford RR, with much improved track, ballast, signals and wiring. In other words it is not a new dedicated route built just for high speed like the TGV or ICE, and many of the curves cannot be eliminated, nor can drawbridges.

      Actually, they can, but it'll cost. And that's precisely the problem: unlike European railways, Amtrak is subject to the whims of whomever is in in the Oval Office and more importantly, who controls Congress. Rail improvements cost a lot of money and successive US administrations have failed to provide Amtrak with the funds they need to improve their services, become less dependent on the freight host railroads and chip away some of the market share from the mighty airlines, domestic and international, on some profitable routes. Primarily as presidents that actually were pro-rail were actively, deliberately and fanatically obstructed by a Congress controlled by the opposite party (yes, that's you GOP!) for party-political reasons, clearly not having the best interests of the nation at heart :-/

      The ICE infrastructure is a mix of "Neubaustrecken" (new lines for 300 km/h) and "Ausbaustrecken" (existing lines upgraded for up to 250 km/h by ICE trainsets only). For most of their journeys, the ICE trains don't run at full speed because there is no new line. Some ICE trainset variants are not built for 300 km/h but for 250 km/h and tilting in curves. Over the years, Germany is gradually adding short stretches of new line, or upgrading more existing lines, whatever is financially the optimum or politically possible. The Northeast Corridor can be compared to a German 250km/h upgraded line, and could be upgraded further as money and politics allow. Maybe later some 300 km/h new line can be added.
      In fact, France does the same as Germany. When the first high-speed line Paris-Lyon opened, the TGVs travelled beyond Lyon to Grenoble, Marseille and Nice over conventional lines to offer direct TGV services to more city pairs even without any new infrastructure beyond Lyon, but using the one new line or a part of it. As more new lines opened, the TGV services could exploit full speed over longer distances. Other lines in France are optimized for 200 km/h running by TGVs.

    I understand the reason why they don’t have the Acela Express all the way up and down the eastern corridor of the is because they aren’t wired. So by golly get those wires up there so we can get to more places quicker it’s good for business. Less fatigue.
