Unfortunately it's not just movies that rely on jump scares. For example, Dead Space was a very scary game, atmosphere was good, not too many jump scares. But part 2&3 relied solely on jump scares. I was yawning through them

The not listening makes a little more sense when you consider the distance between the family. I actually found the not listening more annoying in PA2. Most of the flaws you pointed out I agree with, but I still like this movie. I enjoyed the acting, and liked how some of the scares pay homage to classic horror films.

i think jump scares release the tension the movie has been working hard to build to set you up for a genuine scare. then the jump scare releases all that tension and youre no longer primed for any kind of genuine fright. In short, fuck (most) jump scares. :) peace.

I walked out of the theater on The Marked Ones and that may be the only found footage movie I have ever not finished, to my knowledge, and I've seen some truly awful ones but I typically can find enjoyment out of them, oh I actually didn't finish Devil's Due either.
Horror is by far my favourite genre of film (& trust me I love films) but I next to never go to see them at the cinema because of the loud jump scares. I hate loud noises and I find modern/current horror films cheap & lazy For me it's Hammer, early Universal and Hitchcockian films all the way. I far more enjoy 3 minute quiet suspense than momentary loud "boo". I come back to this review of Spoony's + Sinister again and again cause he describes my feelings of film SO well and it's nice to see someone else share my views (a lot of my friends are of the opinion of modern is automatically better).

The laptops probably stayed on because they run on battery and don't HAVE to be plugged in unless the battery needs charged.
