Five Guitar Licks in Five Shapes - Master your pentatonic shapes on the fretboard!

- We need to be able to play up and down the guitar fretboard with ease. One way to get good at that is to memorize all five of the pentatonic shapes. But that's enough. We want to have cool things to play in each shape when we get up there on the guitar fretboard. So having some classic licks in each shape is essential to mastering the guitar fretboard for rock, blues, and country guitar. In this video you'll learn one lick for each of the five pentatonic shapes.
On our Patreon group we will have more licks for each shape in tabs, plus the jam track. Join our Patreon group at / guitarlessonsvancouver

I've learnt more in 16 minutes of this video than I have in weeks anywhere else!
Great to hear thanks! Lots more guitar lesson videos on our channel and Patreon www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
Sir, I just wanted to say thank you for everything you post. You really have a talent for teaching! GREAT JOB!!!
Thank you very much for saying! Lots more coming to the channel!
Man , your teaching is the most useful stuff I have found anywhere. It is so practical and useful. Others teach stuff that sounds great but without how and where to use it, it is pretty much useless. I play on a praise team and the music is constantly changing from week to week & your instruction is helping me break out of usual playing . Thanks so Much.
Thank you! That is what I try to focus on with these lesson videos. More coming :)
I just discovered your site about two weeks ago, and now I'm obsessed with watching every video you've done. Your teaching style is the best on the entire internet. I love when you teach me how to do things without thinking! I finally found the guy that will show me the secret sauce!
Thank you! Glad to hear it. Lots more lessons coming here to YT and our Patreon this year 😎👍
Hi Blue Morris,
Just a few words to thank you for your great contribution and generosity to guitar teaching community. I am an old 62 chap already and after a long pause too busy with Work and duties, fortunately I am still standing and now i am back to playing guitar and hungry for learning to do it a little bit better, if possible… and i must say that you have helped me a lot. Each of us has different ways and your teaching way fits me very well. I find your methods fantastic, short videos with various and very applicable useful subjects, going straight into the horse mouth with a clear explanation in an understandable tone, aiming to have fun and successfully making complex things easy.
I am constantly diving in this universe of never-ending list of things to learn to improve my guitar playing and as said, your lessons are among the very Best. I can tell I will never be a Pro but your teaching and your Book Guitar Soloing like a Pro are surely contributing to my guitar playing sounding much better and having lots of Fun on the Journey… Practicing and Persistence are winning over Frustration Days when you can’t play as you wish…
Greetings from Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, many thanks again and congratulations for your great teaching, and I plan to carry on learning and having fun until the game is over…
Fabio Nieves.
Thank you very much Fabio for taking the time to write such a great review. I'm glad that the videos and the book are helping you. Lots more coming!
Buy the books. They are everything Blue says and more. Thanks again Blue for the new info.
Thanks Dennis!
Well, after playing for one year now, I have seen a lot of videocontent for guitarlessons on YT, but I have to say that for me you are the only teacher where I can hold my focus on the complete lesson. Therefore I make a lot of progress. I have bought your Book 1 on Amazon a few months ago. Happy to hear your second book is out. I will buy it as my Christmas present 🙂
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback and your support. 😎
My biggest ah HA moment on guitar was finding the chords and arpeggios that fit in each of those shapes.
Great! Maybe you've seen my video called "Six Steps to Mastering Pentatonic" which connects those things with the Major Pentatonic? If not, you might like that one. th-cam.com/video/2Qravkx4KeI/w-d-xo.html
Hi blue,
Just got your solo book 1, what i like the most you explain ideas using shapes or patterns, Definitely that's the way I learn, I am looking forward to learning book 1 at my own pace,
Thanks again blue for your help,
Howard 😊
Cool, thanks for getting the book! Hope you learn lots :) Lots more videos coming to this channel over this year too.
Great lesson!
one of the most fun lessons ever...THANK YOU, BLUE!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The Bend and Touch is my favorite technique there is on guitar. Cool lesson again, thanks!🎸
It's one of my favourite techniques too :) Thanks for watching and commenting!
You do a great job of teaching your concepts. Best I have seen on TH-cam. Thank you and may God Bless you!
Thank you!
Your shape 2 starts on the major root on the 6th string, so call that shape 1. Your shape 1 starts on the minor root so call that shape 6. When you consistently name the shapes after the major scale degree they start on, you then have both E strings as your guide posts for every key. Let your shape numbers truly mirror music theory and it pays off in keeping you from losing your place. You can even stay in one place without chasing roots even as the key changes. Try it sometime.
Some great licks there, especially for that 5th position which I have always avoided - Why? - it sounds great. Thank you.
Glad to hear it thanks! Lots more lessons on the channel and on our Patreon www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver

Thanks! 👍😎
Hi I enjoy your lessons .....what a great teacher you are !!!!! Carl the Dane
Thank you Carl!
Great lick thanks 🙏 you 😊
Thanks for watching and commenting 😀
Thank You! Very practical yet powerful videos as per the usual.
I used to practice the pentatonic positions and worked on becoming familiar with root/blue notes and the nice bending/tension points by improvising along with Roy Buchanan (e.g., Soul Dressing, Five String Blues, Sweet Dreams, etc.). Then I did the same to practice/experiment with navigating between and through the positions. Likewise for practicing dropping in the additional notes that belong to the natural scale.
Nice, that's a good plan. Roy Buchanan had a great sound.
thank you teacher .
Thank you for watching and commenting :)
Again a very useful Video! Thanks from Germany by: Melody2go
Thank you Melody2go!

That second finger usage Ive been missing for years.
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching 🎸
Hi blue,
Does your book 1 have five licks for each five pentatonic shapes?
loving the way you teach,
All the best,
Howard UK
Thanks! The books are set up a little differently than that. But by the end of Book 1 you will be able to apply all the concepts to all the shapes. And then Book 2 takes it further by applying all that to Major Pentatonic
Cool video. Do you think you could do some videos on chuck berry style guitar.
Thank you! I'll consider doing a video on Chuck Berry. I like his songs but I wonder if it's been done here on YT a lot already. I'll look into it.
Super...Digging the tone on this too. Is this a standard Fender? What's the bridge pup?
Thank you! Yes it's an American Pro strat with a humbucker at the bridge, through a UA Dream 65, essentially a Fender Deluxe Reverb
Thanks Blue! Do you have a lesson on using triads?
Thanks! I have it on my list to do a lesson exclusively on triads. I do actually use triads in several videos, like this one on the "Most Useful Caged shape" th-cam.com/video/dX3Xb6p6csA/w-d-xo.html But I will make one exclusively on triads soon :)
Thank you!
Hi Blue. Thanks for another great lesson. Does it make sense when I play shape I higher on the neck, after playing shape V. Or should I desent to to shape I on the low A (root)?
If I understand your question, after shape 5 comes shape 1 again. So shape 1 is up the fretboard from shape 5 ... up being towards the body of the guitar.
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver yes I know but when I play shape one again, do I go up the fretboard or desent where I started?
Do you have video on major licks?
Lots of my videos cover Major Pentatonic but not a video specifically with a list of licks in Major. This top 10 licks video has some in Major some in Minor ... th-cam.com/video/R7cgcC3aMGk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=eF13eT1guKHmfoXN
Call and Response
Great tips. Must be hard to teach what you do by second nature.
Thanks! I've been teaching a long time so now it's just bringing what I have done with in-person lessons here to TH-cam. Glad you enjoyed the video. Lots more on our channel and Patreon group.
Thanks Blue. I’m going to be licking more than my cat. Another good one. Did you get a new Strat?
Haha, nice. Not a new guitar, just one I haven't played in a while :)
He said "Reach around" huh huh😅
