When you co-sign for your brothers car by being on the title..you get the warrant for the unpaid parking ticket that you did not even know about when YOU get pulled over. Surprise! Yeah, do not co-sign for family members who think they deserve a new car cause life is rough...whatever. Pay cash for your car, I'm out.
Their past irresponsibility is their problem not yours.
Only you can save yourself.
Never co-sign for anyone regardless of who they are..
But get it settled in writing. Get a paper saying it’s off of you so they can’t come back after you.

Repo doesn't mean the debt goes away. And they usually sell the car for way cheap at auction so you'll pay an even bigger difference than you'd expect. Definitely try to sell to someone privately before it gets to the point of repo
The car is already sold. The 11k is the balance left on it.
Thus, it’s never worth it to get repo’d. You’ll end up paying regardless.

Sorry if I wasn't being clear Jean, I meant for anyone watching this, to please try and sell it before it gets to that point. Obviously in this case is already a done deal. As Bob said, if you're going to have to pay the difference either way, it's better for you to sell it rather than a repo auction. I've seen random marked up add on fees for fixing things on the car even to get it to auction like $300 to replace a tail light.

Why is co-signing is something you should not do for anyone ever? Here's example: 63,457
Dave’s really not saying ALL people who need a co-signer are deadbeats. He’s saying that people who don’t pay their bills until they reach repossession are deadbeats. Rachel’s defending her like she just fell on hard times... if this woman fell on hard times, she’d be trying to reconcile the debt and pay it off or make amends with her ex somehow to fix the problem. Him calling into the show like he has to shoulder this whole problem on his own tells us she IS a deadbeat or else he’d be getting help paying it off!

Never co-sign. I paid my car in full with my own money I don’t want any handouts I don’t wanna owe anybody anything. I’m 21 and I’m already a cheapskate but you know what I saved a lot of money not being dumb.

Haha his own daughter was flabbergasted when he called the gf a deadbeat. I really like how even though they all have the same principles on money and, for the most part, life. Because a loan is an agreement and the general rule with agreements is, that they can be changed at any time if both parties agree.

I co-aigned a leased for a friend (well at this point non-existent friend) hasn't paid a penny on it and I'm sure I'm going to end up paying the bill. Won't communicate with me, gives me the run around, etc. If they get evicted or they come after me, would I have to settle the entire amount or can I offer half and have them go at them for the rest?
I already know, huge mistake. Dumbest mistake I've made in my life. I'm just looking for some peace of mind at this point. Hoping one way or another it exists.

Making someone an authorized user on a credit card account in one person’s name is even worse than co-signing a loan. The authorized user isn’t legally responsible for any of the unpaid credit card debt.
There's just no saving men. As much as they are warned, one pair of pretty legs and it's up for game, they'd do anything.

No someone needed help isn’t a DEAD BEAT. I had that happen when I was 20. I had saved but not enough to put onto a new car. They asked me to find a co- signer. I left broken as my current car was having issues and I was commuting to school over an hour away. I couldn’t ask anyone just didn’t feel right to me so I made it work for another year. My point is just because someone needs a co-signer doesn’t mean they are DEAD BEATS. 20 yrs later and I’ve never had a car loan and I don’t have that old of a car now.

I see your point. The lenders are smart enough to know that someone with no credit history is risky to lend to, so they ask for a co signer. Had you found one, your true character would have been revealed.

For Pete’s sake, such weakness in this country today. Call it like it is and if someone can’t handle it, they need to go get some character strength building help...or a sense of humor.
If you don't pay your bills, you are a deadbeat by definition. If you pay off your bills, the adjective goes away.

Dave - I have a question. I skipped around in the baby steps and now have 5 months saved in Cash. but I have 2800 left in no interest Credit Card debt (was offered balance transfer by a card I paid off earlier in the year). should I just take advantage and pay down that debt using my emergency money today. or just take advantage of the no interest for the next 1 year and pay down the 2800 slowly and just finish it before the interest period begins?
Just end it man. Start fresh and begin building real wealth
Pay off the debt now. That's one less thing to worry about later. Take the win and move forward. Debt in the rearview mirror is much better than debt on the horizon ahead of you. Just keep adding to the savings until you replenish that $2800.
