Can someone tell them that Hattori is the dragon not the horse. he turns into a seahorse because dragons aren't real and in Japanese culture seahorses are thought to be baby dragons.
Hiroi Kusaji I know right? If he turned into a real dragon, it wouldn’t fit the show because the show is based in reality. Dunno why a real horse would turn into a seahorse instead of just a horse.
Okay so yeah the curse was never explained in the old one. Why we really needed a reboot. Also just want to explain that hatori is the dragon cause in japan they are called sea dragons not seahorses. Also ther is a myth about sea dragons being a baby horses and also the Japanese word literally translates to “baby dragons”. There is one more reason he is a sea dragon but that is a little bit if a spoiler and hopefully will be mentioned later.
So I recently learned that the somas are a clan (the sub says this) which means that not all of them are related. Apparently a long time ago in japan this was more known as a thing where you can become apart of a clan. It’s kind of hard to explain lol sorry
In modern terms its an extremly extended family and very wealthy with arranged marriages and stuff. And many outsiders that marry into them take the soma name and those that dont are still somas even with a different family name.
Replying late, but there's a bit more to it than that and it's interesting so I thought I'd share. Apparently the Japanese word for seahorse means "illegitimate child of the dragon" (or "dragon's bastard" if you like) and in Japanese mythology seahorses are associated with dragons--sometimes considered baby dragons. When I tried to look up details just now, I found modern media that references the myth (e.g. the Pokemon family Horsea, Seadra, and Kingdra), but I couldn't find a specific folk tale they're referencing, so I don't know where the idea originated. But I remember learning it this way when I watched the original Fruits Basket anime like fifteen years ago: Seahorses are baby dragons, and since dragons are long-lived, maybe even immortal creatures of great power, it takes hundreds of years for a seahorse to grow up and change into a dragon. So Hatori's human lifespan isn't long enough for him to become one. He's just a baby dragon. So he turns into a seahorse. I wish I could cite a source on that. I don't know whether I got it from the original show or read it somewhere or what. But I do like it.
this is super late and all but just wanted to note the reason he isn't a dragon actually isn't because dragons aren't real; SPOILERS for later on in seasons 2/3 but we eventually see flashbacks of the original zodiac banquet and we can see the original dragon was very much a real dragon; not to mention there was the existence of the extremely long-lived "God" figure that also possessed some form of magic to create the elixir that bound the zodiac's souls together for eternity in the first place. It's actually explained that the curse has just simply weakened so much after the millennia have gone by, that somewhere down the road the actual dragon form was reduced simply to the seahorse. its the same reason MAJORRRR S3 SPOILERS kureno's curse broke when he was young; the curse had always been slowly weakening as time went on.
You've probably watched it already but the curse is the bond between Akito and the other zodiac members. Even those who love outside come back to Akito when summoned, the consequences of not doing so along with the anger of the animal spirits so dedicated to Akito burning inside them, they can never defy Akito outright
Also, this discussion was so good! you made a lot of points that with time they will be answered haha but for now, i love how as you watch a new episode, there are longer discussions skjhdkl i dont know if i make sense lol. just happy to see you experience this journey
Momeji's accent is sooo cute! Though I don't recall if he was raised in Germany, so I don't know if he would have had an accent. I'm still adjusting to the reboot, though.
Man. Not a fan of Momiji's accent in the dub. I realize that it's more cannon to the author's vision of him but I liked his more childish voice he had in the original.
Actually his accent is from the Manga. Hes half German, half Japanese and has the accent they just didnt show it in the original anime. So its being true to the manga and I like him with the accent. Hes still a child, but it makes him better I feel.
*follow-up spoiler* The problem is that in the anime it's more obvious because she's voiced by a woman. In the manga there was no voice acting so it was easy to be deceived.
From what i know hatori is the dragon, the horse is a girl that i forgot the name. Spoilers..And the man with akito in the car, is that the bird? The one who got his curse broken? And akito is like that bcoz she is the god in the zodiac and the her sole purpose is to be with every member of the zodiac and be loved by them. That's why she's jealous when someone is trying to break their bond.
Please do limit or if possible not even post future spoilers (even such small tidbits) considering the adaptation plans to adapt everything. Let the watchers enjoy the slow revelations.

When I frst watched fruits basket thought the dragon would be a lizard
Huh. That explains so much.

guys, hatori is the dragon btw, but can't transform into one because dragons aren't technically real.

This reaction gives me life.

0:47 ah i see where you Looked at
I just came across the snake in the latest sub episode....eheheheh I'd been told to look forward to them 😅
Y'all need to watch The Promised Neverland and Clannad
They will ball their eyes out if they ever watch Clannad. My goodness, that show is a tear-jerker!
It just clicked to me that one of the next anime they should watch is Saga of Tanya the Evil!! I'd love to hear what Rick has to say about it.
The curse is to break the zodiac animals with their hosts...so they can live normal lives
Actually not the part that was referred to here. The curse refered to here is not the part about the animals but the other side of the curse.
Man. Not a fan of Momiji's accent in the dub. I realize that it's more cannon to the author's vision of him but I liked his more childish voice he had in the original.
I would have forgiven the accent more if we at least got to hear his song. 😭

Please react to Thanos vs Darkseid Deathbattle
don't read if you don't want spoilers of the last eposode of season 2
