That's usually the way it works though. Old people are usually conservative and set-in-their-ways. Young people, whether it be due to a lack of life experience or just more brain elasticity, are generally more open minded. At least, as long as their mental growth isn't being stifled by their family/social group.

Raphtalia’s sword is actually aiming for Mister Asschin McBullshitter, or the guy “in charge” of the knights (and presumably the one who ordered the friendly fire). The only reason this idiot is still alive is because of Sir Scarface blocking Raphtalia’s lunge like a boss. When you compare Asschin’s face to Scarface’s...face, you can tell Scarface is a professional, seasoned war veteran who values action over words. He immediately put himself in harm’s way to stop a lightning quick demi-human from goring his superior. The man is completely fearless. Comparing that to Asschin, who’s more concerned about pissing on the Shield Hero (and pissing his pants at every real sign of danger), and you can tell it was only through red tape that this guy became head of the knights. He’s a blowhard trying to cash in on the situation, not actually helping people. Makes you wonder how their standings and attitudes will affect their destinies in the coming weeks...

If you're keeping score, Naofumi has directly protected at least 6 people with that shield in this town (one guy twice), not including blocking for Raphtalia at least 5 times here. Raphtalia's right, that Shield HAS saved her life many times.

Like during the fight against the Spear Hero where it shows the guy is over 20 levels higher than Naofumi. He has so many cool shields, passive abilities and skills but we don't really get that nuance without the LN. Same for Raphtalia. We see her gain XP occasionally but we don't see her getting any skills.

Kinda like some FF Games where you get a skill from using an item that has the skill on it and save it permanently when you get the JP for it. Last one that I knew had that skill was either a tactics or FF9.

I love the quick emotions they animated with Raphtalia, from the adoration that Naofumi protected, to the shock from his words, to the anger. It was so fluid. I really appreciate the work they put into this anime.

Probably the queen allowed only the knights who supported Naofumi. There are some knights who worked for the Three Heroes Church they would have helped Malty and the king to escape if they were the majority.
This scene just has more and more meaning the further you look into it. Finally, more and more people are starting to see through the lies way before the queen does her thing. To not spoil too much. It's one of the best-crafted anime I've seen to date.
I suppose Phalanx formation is a formation of spear and shields in a half circle? my best guess is that he wanted his scattered knights to form up close before the charge but hell I don't know much of war formations so I would think there be a better formation to take.

The " phalanx" formation is one of the most famous war tactics and it was supposedley used by the conqueror Alexander the great around 338 a.c. - 168 d.c. The phalanx is composed by a close-rank formation of heavy infantry aligned with long spears and interlocking shields as it's said by the article of the "ancient history encyclopedia" . The purpose of this tactic is to demoralize the enemy infantry without compromising defense, in which case, the territory that favored this kind of formation was mostly flat land, free from any obstacle that could break it's cohesion and ruin it's effectiveness. In case you're still reading and you haven't gone anywhere yet, I asume that you can see the main problem with the scene we were talking about. There is literally no reason for them to yell "phalanx!" Out of nowhere if they've got not enough forces to keep the enemy's strenght at bay, nor the ideal terrain to execute the formation, and most important, if they have no freaking spears!! xD
@@Ganom-ng1zt the phalanx had been around in practice long before alexander, his addition was to make even longer spears than those currently in use by his countrymen. a phalanx or shield walls of different types most likely have been around since the dawn of warfare, while some like alexander used this tactic to great effect with longer spears and tightly structured disciplined formations he is not the originator. the spear was a main part of the formation not just for the reach it provides but because spears were cheap to produce and easy to use making them perfect for larger armies of poorly trained conscripts. in practice however spears break or get disarmed quickly once the opposing force closes ground and more often than not the bulk of the fighting was done with shorter melee weapons, at least for those in the front rows. the spears allowed those farther back from the front to reach over top and assist the front lines with well timed spear strikes taken from relative safety behind a row or two of defenders. while you are right it is used to great effect on an open battle field . it has nothing to do with having superior numbers it is a defensive stance that allows a smaller disciplined force to defend itself while outnumbered. they have every reason to take this formation given the fact that they are surrounded by enemies. the lack of spears is a complete non issue due to the fact that their numbers ARE so low those near the center of formation can still reach to strike over the heads of their allies without needing the extra reach a spear provides, so while not technically a true "phalanx" and more just a shield wall the differences in the end are somewhat small and i think its more an issue with translation and the fact that the term phalanx is so widely used and recognized. this term is used often in video games as well as a stand in for any group defensive stance.

Men with true honour supported the shield hero. If he would have left them to die these men of quality would have died too. A selfless act always sparks another.
The only thing lacking is the spears. I understand the fact that not everybody knows medieval history and doesn't know that spears were the dominant weapon of the warfare but I guess the formation still serves its purpose. They're closely aligned with shields and their swords are protruding out keeping the enemy at bay and morilizing your own men to fight. So I guess it still works somewhat ?
Even worse, something tells me the royal knights would've done that fireball thing even with people in the village. Especially if they're willing to risk killing a Hero. It was thank goodness to the Shield Hero and Ralphtalia that the casualties were in the single digits cuz the wave wasn't the only thing that would've gotten people killed. And if it was any other hero than the Shield one, the fireballs would've killed them
@James Schulte This is incorrect. As evidenced when people were giving Raphtalia free things and saying "You grew up to be very beautiful", Naofumi only saw her as how he got her. He proves this by calling everyone lolicons. In ep 4 when she finally brings him back from his despair he comments on not even recognizing her, showing he had no concept of the fact that she, let alone the world around him had evolved beyond what it was when he got her. Right now Naofumi needs someone he can trust. Raphtalia gave him a reason to fight, a reason to care. That kind of character development though? It takes time.

I legit got choked up at this scene because the knights were not only helping, they were HAPPY to be allowed to help. Also Raphtalia would have absolutely one-shot that commander if the honorable knight with the scar hadn't intervened.
Raph's clothes look so soft and cozy. Like I can feel how it feel to hug her just by looking at her. Rather than just some scanty fantasy clothes other fantasy girls wear.
To be frank, this kind of wear feels a lot more attractive and beautiful then the overly exaggerated or exposing outfits most fantasy settings make women wear. I feel that kind of trend is good for maybe one or two characters at most, same for the "Conan, the Barbarian" look, but not as a standart for everyone else. Raphtalia's costume actually looks pretty medieval-like, despite her legs showing (the only "scanty" side of her outfit). Heck, those sleeves almost look like gambesons from a certain perspective! She looks like she's actually wearing light armor. I think that's really neat. EDIT: Okay, correction, maybe not at this point yet. But later on, Raphtalia's costume really gets an upgrade and actually looks like light armor. But yeah, even here, I'm glad her clothes aren't the stereotypical *almost nude "armor"* that's so overly used, sometimes. XP Like I said, when that becomes a standart, it stops being cool and just becomes ridiculous. Well, I'm my personal opinion, at least.
i want people to notice about that one knight who was able to stop raphtallia's trust, the same trust that killed the giant zombie, while wielding the sword with only one hand and in the worst angle for confortable blocking
This probably isn't relevant but I want to take a moment to acknowledge the ineptitude of Melromarc's military. When they draw their swords when Raphtalia attacked them, that implies that they were walking into what is effectively a warzone unarmed. It's a small detail, but you'd think when you're walking into a battlefield you'd at least want a weapon in hand.

I wasn't actually that much into the hordes idea until they released it since it's such a generic isekai trope but in this show it MATTERS. It's the reason the heroes were summoned and it's a shit ton of danger to everyone in the area. Let's just compare a generic isekai like SAO to Shield hero with a metaphore. In SAO, if you get punched in the face you don't feel it and you punch harder In Shield hero, if you get punched you fall back, you feel pain, you have a mark on you and you're not punching any harder. The punch matters in that show and that's what makes it so good. That and Raphtalia
SAO can barely be considered an Isekai so that comparison is horrible. You're also comparing getting punched in reality vs getting punched in a video game simulation and treating it as the same is also wrong. Going by your logic, Bleach, Dragon ball and Yugioh would be considered Isekais.

The thing about SAO and feeling pain is interesting. You only feel a slight thud on you if you're playing the game normally, but the feeling of knowing you're taking damage and you might die is the kick. Your mind is what makes it real and SAO through Nerve Gear goes mostly through your brain, through your mind, they know it's a death game and they feel every single bit of pain they suffer. From exhaustion to thirst to hunger. In SAO it's all real to them, since if they think it's happening, well then it's happening.
Love naofumi. This world wronged him I'm almost every possible way, and he's very clearly angry about it, but he still chooses to protect those who mock him.
I was really hoping through this whole series he would get some kind of empowered shield bash type ability. Would have been awesome to see a really good one used in the duel with spear hero.
@@thegk-verse4216 tbf, while it may have been more common back in the middle ages (which is largely what this setting mimics), it would still be rather rare to see such blatant hostility towards someone that is ostensibly an ally of the state, on the battlefield especially. Not showing even a modicum of respect or restraint in situations like that were a great way to either incite a rebellion or die from a dagger in the back. That's the whole reason the Queen didn't play a major role until the last few episodes - she was doing major damage control to prevent a world war. If she hadn't done that, Melromarc would have been summarily destroyed by the other nations. No amount of Heroic or Holy weapons would've saved them. The queen even said as much.
Tbh I’m pretty happy to know that naofumi sama protected her and would protect her with he’s life and would do anything to protect her and keep her safe at all times no matter what and I’m so proud of my baby’s for overcoming the obstacles that we’re in their way and yet they overcame it together
One of my favorite things about this show's first season was how is showed how grey a public false-accusation can make things... Even when you're doing something right some people don't want to help or give you a second chance or any credit just because of who they think you are, but then there are others who are willing to look past any possible misdeeds and move forward with any given task at hand.
The knight at 2:15 is probably the only respectable knight/side character of this series(not taking into account the junior knights that he commands,(the one's who ask to join naofumi's party))
I love this show, and i just noticed this, but because of naofumi's inability to use a weapon, he is the only hero that HAS to cooperate with others to defeat the waves and almost forces others to stand shoulder to shoulder. Just a neat little plot device thing that i like.
Whenever I watch this scene now I can't help but remember the IG video where it cuts from Raphtalia dashing out of his cape to a real life raccoon jumping at someone. I can't help but laugh.

The sheer level of diffrence between, to borrow another comment's nicknames, Captain Asschin and Sir Scarface here is as diffrent as night and day. Sir Scarface clearly got the position through being a seasoned, experienced badass, whereas Captain Asschin probably got the position due to his connections, be they familial or political.

This scene just has more and more meaning the further you look into it. Finally, more and more people are starting to see through the lies way before the queen does her thing. To not spoil too much. It's one of the best-crafted anime I've seen to date.

I suppose Phalanx formation is a formation of spear and shields in a half circle? my best guess is that he wanted his scattered knights to form up close before the charge but hell I don't know much of war formations so I would think there be a better formation to take.

The " phalanx" formation is one of the most famous war tactics and it was supposedley used by the conqueror Alexander the great around 338 a.c. - 168 d.c.
The phalanx is composed by a close-rank formation of heavy infantry aligned with long spears and interlocking shields as it's said by the article of the "ancient history encyclopedia" .
The purpose of this tactic is to demoralize the enemy infantry without compromising defense, in which case, the territory that favored this kind of formation was mostly flat land, free from any obstacle that could break it's cohesion and ruin it's effectiveness.
In case you're still reading and you haven't gone anywhere yet, I asume that you can see the main problem with the scene we were talking about. There is literally no reason for them to yell "phalanx!" Out of nowhere if they've got not enough forces to keep the enemy's strenght at bay, nor the ideal terrain to execute the formation, and most important, if they have no freaking spears!! xD
@@Ganom-ng1zt the phalanx had been around in practice long before alexander, his addition was to make even longer spears than those currently in use by his countrymen. a phalanx or shield walls of different types most likely have been around since the dawn of warfare, while some like alexander used this tactic to great effect with longer spears and tightly structured disciplined formations he is not the originator. the spear was a main part of the formation not just for the reach it provides but because spears were cheap to produce and easy to use making them perfect for larger armies of poorly trained conscripts. in practice however spears break or get disarmed quickly once the opposing force closes ground and more often than not the bulk of the fighting was done with shorter melee weapons, at least for those in the front rows. the spears allowed those farther back from the front to reach over top and assist the front lines with well timed spear strikes taken from relative safety behind a row or two of defenders.
while you are right it is used to great effect on an open battle field . it has nothing to do with having superior numbers it is a defensive stance that allows a smaller disciplined force to defend itself while outnumbered. they have every reason to take this formation given the fact that they are surrounded by enemies. the lack of spears is a complete non issue due to the fact that their numbers ARE so low those near the center of formation can still reach to strike over the heads of their allies without needing the extra reach a spear provides, so while not technically a true "phalanx" and more just a shield wall the differences in the end are somewhat small and i think its more an issue with translation and the fact that the term phalanx is so widely used and recognized. this term is used often in video games as well as a stand in for any group defensive stance.

The only thing lacking is the spears. I understand the fact that not everybody knows medieval history and doesn't know that spears were the dominant weapon of the warfare but I guess the formation still serves its purpose. They're closely aligned with shields and their swords are protruding out keeping the enemy at bay and morilizing your own men to fight. So I guess it still works somewhat ?

@James Schulte This is incorrect. As evidenced when people were giving Raphtalia free things and saying "You grew up to be very beautiful", Naofumi only saw her as how he got her. He proves this by calling everyone lolicons.
In ep 4 when she finally brings him back from his despair he comments on not even recognizing her, showing he had no concept of the fact that she, let alone the world around him had evolved beyond what it was when he got her.
Right now Naofumi needs someone he can trust. Raphtalia gave him a reason to fight, a reason to care. That kind of character development though? It takes time.

I legit got choked up at this scene because the knights were not only helping, they were HAPPY to be allowed to help. Also Raphtalia would have absolutely one-shot that commander if the honorable knight with the scar hadn't intervened.
I love Raphtalia so much, because her warm character and kind trait make people calm down. Thank to her for giving me so much relief.
Raph's clothes look so soft and cozy. Like I can feel how it feel to hug her just by looking at her.
Rather than just some scanty fantasy clothes other fantasy girls wear.
To be frank, this kind of wear feels a lot more attractive and beautiful then the overly exaggerated or exposing outfits most fantasy settings make women wear. I feel that kind of trend is good for maybe one or two characters at most, same for the "Conan, the Barbarian" look, but not as a standart for everyone else.
Raphtalia's costume actually looks pretty medieval-like, despite her legs showing (the only "scanty" side of her outfit). Heck, those sleeves almost look like gambesons from a certain perspective! She looks like she's actually wearing light armor. I think that's really neat.
EDIT: Okay, correction, maybe not at this point yet. But later on, Raphtalia's costume really gets an upgrade and actually looks like light armor.
But yeah, even here, I'm glad her clothes aren't the stereotypical *almost nude "armor"* that's so overly used, sometimes. XP

This probably isn't relevant but I want to take a moment to acknowledge the ineptitude of Melromarc's military. When they draw their swords when Raphtalia attacked them, that implies that they were walking into what is effectively a warzone unarmed. It's a small detail, but you'd think when you're walking into a battlefield you'd at least want a weapon in hand.

I wasn't actually that much into the hordes idea until they released it since it's such a generic isekai trope but in this show it MATTERS.
It's the reason the heroes were summoned and it's a shit ton of danger to everyone in the area.
Let's just compare a generic isekai like SAO to Shield hero with a metaphore.
In SAO, if you get punched in the face you don't feel it and you punch harder
In Shield hero, if you get punched you fall back, you feel pain, you have a mark on you and you're not punching any harder.
The punch matters in that show and that's what makes it so good.

If you are talking about SAO as a game then I will rebuttal that as it is a game. If it is Alization then I call that a fair point.
SAO can barely be considered an Isekai so that comparison is horrible. You're also comparing getting punched in reality vs getting punched in a video game simulation and treating it as the same is also wrong. Going by your logic, Bleach, Dragon ball and Yugioh would be considered Isekais.

The thing about SAO and feeling pain is interesting. You only feel a slight thud on you if you're playing the game normally, but the feeling of knowing you're taking damage and you might die is the kick.
Your mind is what makes it real and SAO through Nerve Gear goes mostly through your brain, through your mind, they know it's a death game and they feel every single bit of pain they suffer. From exhaustion to thirst to hunger. In SAO it's all real to them, since if they think it's happening, well then it's happening.

@@thegk-verse4216 tbf, while it may have been more common back in the middle ages (which is largely what this setting mimics), it would still be rather rare to see such blatant hostility towards someone that is ostensibly an ally of the state, on the battlefield especially. Not showing even a modicum of respect or restraint in situations like that were a great way to either incite a rebellion or die from a dagger in the back. That's the whole reason the Queen didn't play a major role until the last few episodes - she was doing major damage control to prevent a world war. If she hadn't done that, Melromarc would have been summarily destroyed by the other nations. No amount of Heroic or Holy weapons would've saved them. The queen even said as much.

Tbh I’m pretty happy to know that naofumi sama protected her and would protect her with he’s life and would do anything to protect her and keep her safe at all times no matter what and I’m so proud of my baby’s for overcoming the obstacles that we’re in their way and yet they overcame it together
One of my favorite things about this show's first season was how is showed how grey a public false-accusation can make things... Even when you're doing something right some people don't want to help or give you a second chance or any credit just because of who they think you are, but then there are others who are willing to look past any possible misdeeds and move forward with any given task at hand.
This show came out at the peak of "believe all women", so a whole lot of people criticized it for DARING to suggest that women are capable of lying.

The knight at 2:15 is probably the only respectable knight/side character of this series(not taking into account the junior knights that he commands,(the one's who ask to join naofumi's party))
The animation flow of Shield&Sword by the end was so frigging cool, as to show their teamwork made them one person in battle
This anime is so good and so rage-inducing. I love it.
I love this show, and i just noticed this, but because of naofumi's inability to use a weapon, he is the only hero that HAS to cooperate with others to defeat the waves and almost forces others to stand shoulder to shoulder. Just a neat little plot device thing that i like.
Whenever I watch this scene now I can't help but remember the IG video where it cuts from Raphtalia dashing out of his cape to a real life raccoon jumping at someone. I can't help but laugh.

The sheer level of diffrence between, to borrow another comment's nicknames, Captain Asschin and Sir Scarface here is as diffrent as night and day. Sir Scarface clearly got the position through being a seasoned, experienced badass, whereas Captain Asschin probably got the position due to his connections, be they familial or political.
