Honestly, watching this, it feels like the game is a farming sim for the sole reason of farming sims currently being popular. You could change the method that you obtain monsters and it wouldn't really affect anything.
I love that Marvelous are always trying new gameplay styles. Even though most are either hit or miss, when it hits, it's a great one. Skipping this but eager for the next title!
I've never found this one appealing and this video just reinforced that feeling xD. It's like everything I don't want in a farming sim put into one. The farming just seems unnecessary, like you could get the monsters a different way that would be more engaging. I think Fairy Tail fans will enjoy it for the story, though.
Mashima's art style has always been appealing to me if a bit samey between his series like Rave Master, Fairy Tail, and Eden Zero. (Plus Monster Soul and Monster Hunter Orage) A lot of the characters look like one another. But with how many characters he makes per series that's understandable. It's nice to see his style in a monster farming game. (A literal monster rancher if you will ) Thanks for your review! It probably won't be a day one purchase, but I think there is enough there for an interesting time!
Mashima is actually a great character designer, but for some reason he always reserves his most interesting designs for villains and side characters, while main characters are just variations of the same 4 or 5 designs. No idea why he does that.
I actually don’t mind the art style. The vibrancy is a plus for me but that’s just my opinion. I’m just not totally sure on gameplay yet. Definitely want to look into this more
I only know about this game because Mashima did the art for it. I’m a big fairy tail fan. I wasn’t too sold on the actual game, I only actually only want the art book.
I'm also only interested in this game because of Mishima's designs lol, i wanna play it just so i can see all his designs, as i am also a huge fairy tail fan
I'm getting Monster Rancher vibes... at least early MR vides. A lot of what I remember with MR was that there wasn't much to the games other than training and tournaments... though I do remember in MR4 there was dungeon crawling of sorts and little bits of story. I would not be surprised if they took some ideas from that series for Farmagia. Although there was no relationships with npcs in MR, other than bonding with your monsters and both were done by two different developers.
never know someone actually playing Monster Rancher, Great game btw especially MR2, its very underrated. Spending a hundred of hours into those game as a child.
@@abui6914 I've only played MR2 and MR4, spent a lot of time in 4 as my brother owned 2. Preferred the fusion system of 2 but some aspects of game play in 4.
Helpful review sir. Im a fan of the publisher but will probably pass on this one lol. I like farming sims that are a little more in depth, and dont mind monster collecting as long as they feel unique. (Not throwing 20 of them out at a time)
I think I’m going to like this one! I also really enjoyed Elrentaros Wanderings. Btw you should check out Lynked: Banner of the Spark. It fits in with other games you enjoy that have both cozy and combat elements :) I’m having a great time with it so far
I just don’t vibe with the artstyle :( I feel like marvelous has been dropping the ball with artstyle since the switch era of games started. I miss the 3ds era 😭
What instantly jumped out at me was how fanservice-y the art style is on the female characters. Shading into "don't play when someone who doesn't 'get' your hobbies is in the room" territory.
@SimuLord On top of this, the art itself feels... weirdly cheap? The character sprites look like a pretty skilled hobbyist artist's first try making digital art, like, the designs are fairly generic and they just look off for some reason, to me.
3:52 so I wasn’t the only one getting Dynasty Warriors vibes! but this time you’re the mobs, haha. it’s weird seeing obviously Hiro Mashima designs in a game (the similarity between his protagonists’ designs sure is something). doubtful this game is for me since visual novels and Dynasty Warriors-likes aren’t my fave, therefore monster farming seems tedious to progress in, but it’s an interesting mix! thanks for sharing!
I clicked on this because I love Fairy Tail and I love farming sims so I was hoping I'd hit gold. Unfortunately, I think you're right that it's a bit too like Harvestella and that sadly was not my cup of tea. Nice to hear what you liked and disliked! Great video and helpful in stopping me from making an impulse purchase. Hope you continue to enjoy playing it!
I have high hope for this game because of fairy tail style but utterly disappointing. Negative feedback: If you're looking for something Rune Factory/Harvest Moon esque with the farming aspect, look elsewhere. Its essentially a visual novel with every location only accessible through a menu, except for the adventure/quest system which works like a rouge-like for some reason. Game play wise, as I said every location is accessible via a menu with no free roam aspect, similar in style to those gatcha phone games with you selecting the stage you wish to go, and your "Farm" which is in the very name of the game, is nothing but a field with your character being unable of even explore the area around said field.
Definitely seems very interesting and just about what I expected, though I definitely feel it focuses more on stuff outside the farming aspect. The story aspect is interesting since it seems it’s simultaneously trying to be have a deeper story but also has a lot of modes like the maze where you can just turn your brain off while doing something else. The art and vibrancy is also top tier! Probably not a day 1 pickup, though if I see it on store shelves and I’ve got some extra cash I would definitely pick it up.
Hmm, I think this is a game I could have a good time playing, but I'm not *drawn* to it the way I'd like to be. But I'm still happy it exists and I hope it's successful enough for a sequel so they can develop the ideas further? Farming Sims need more new ideas that break the mold imo, and this is a really fun take on the cozy/chill farm sim. I really like the idea of a chaotic combat game with really chill life sim downtime, I just wish there was *more* life sim elements. The world and environments are beautiful and I adore the colors they use, I'd love to be able to exist in that world more outside of combat and menus. I feel a little bad about this, because I don't think the Fairytale mabgaka is a bad artist at all - he's got great linework and his style has so much personality - and I get that the *point* here is to draw in more of the shounen crowd... But I just don't vibe with his character designs. There are elements to a lot of the characters that I do like, but over all it's just not what appeals to me with both the monsters and people. I like visual novels, but when it's just text and portraits the text better be REAL engaging if the portraits make me feel more dissapointed than anything. Maybe if it's on sale sometime? Maybe I'll check someone else's playthrough and I'll see how I feel about the writing? I do really wish all the best for this game though, I really don't want the devs to be discouraged from trying stuff like this in the future. 🤞
It's nice to see takes on farm sim that aren't just "Harvest Moon, reskinned." It seems like this one maybe should have had a different name to make it clearer that it's really more of an action RPG with farming elements, but the general premise seems like they're actually trying something new, rather than sticking with the expected genre tropes.
Haven’t played it but the idea of a dating sim/visual novel with like farming or running a shop is pretty interesting. I’d think it’d have to be made better tho and definitely marketed that way instead of just a farming sim
I was initially not excited for this as it seemed like a farming sim and a monster collector, neither which I was too interested in. However, now that I have seen several reviews and the game in action, I am loving the art style and the soundtrack is amazing. Farming is barely there and it mostly about dungeon crawling. I like the approach they used with the combat mechanics and the characters are really engaging as is the character progression. Haha and unlike Josh I also really like the hand drawn characters with the visual novel story telling here and in Erentaros (sp?).
I appreciate the spin on the usual formula but I think this is a miss for me. Generic Mashima designs, only straight (male) romance, fanservicey female characters when the men get to dress normally, over saturated colours, stiff animation, really chaotic battles and only menus for a lot of things? It’s like everything that puts me off a game in one go lol hope people enjoy it if they want to play it though!
As someone who loves farmsims but also is a big fan of dungeon crawly roguelikes and otome game VNs, I actually am really enjoying what I've played so far. But the promotional material for this game does it 100% a disservice.
So all the monsters do the same thing? It would be disappointing if there is only a weakness/super effective system for the combat. I was hoping for certain monsters to unique effects, and you combine them to maximize effectiveness.
i could tell from the art style alone that this was gonna be a game i skipped entirely. everything about it is just so unappealing to me. good lord the character designs 😭😭😭(the elemental spirit designs are actually rly nice tho, i love sylphie's design a lot)
Great Video. To me, Farmagia looks like shit. The biggest turn-off is there is no CC (Character Creation/Creator) in a Farming Sim and Creature Collecting Game. What a bad review. Your negatives sold me on the game. I like big stories and deep combat. Sounds like your own expectations held you back from liking it as much as I will.
I think the static image with 4 expressions VN style is played out. To me it shows lack of effort and dependence on the players to not care to want more.

Yep. Completely half baked

Farmagia is clearly not a game marketed to me, thanks for making this video, as it helped me decide against buying it.
Seconded. The My Time at Sandrock romance DLC just came out today and I think that's as good an excuse as any to just play that again.

@XanderVJ I'm not sure either, and they typically fit the same archetypes, too.
Why does the name sound like a medical condition? "I'm sorry, but your son has.... left ventricular farmagia."
It reminds me of the Italian word for cheese. "I'll have the quattro farmagia pizza."
I actually don’t mind the art style. The vibrancy is a plus for me but that’s just my opinion. I’m just not totally sure on gameplay yet. Definitely want to look into this more
The color style oh my god, it's so vibrant. What's up with Marvelous and their vibrant color style lately
I prefer calling it saturation puke
I think a few developers discovered the Lear Temple from Warhammer40k and are desperate to recreate its alien architecture and vivid bright colors.
This looks like it plays like a mobile game. But some of the monster stuff looks fun.
I think I'd rather have treats then a mini game. Redoing a mini game every time sounds way more tedious

Oh...this game wasnt what I expected, but I'm glad I know now. Thanks for this review, Josh!
Thanks for the review! Always helpful since I have so many of the games waitlisted
I'd pick Harvestella over this game any time. The flashy colors and chaotic patterns just give me a headache, and the combat isn't my cup of tea.
I just don’t vibe with the artstyle :( I feel like marvelous has been dropping the ball with artstyle since the switch era of games started. I miss the 3ds era 😭
