    That’s all that needs to be said

      Ben haha it’s way more spec’d up, modern and a better all rounder to the clio to be honest 😂 but the major thing about the civic is the steering, which I just can’t get my head around!

      Lee Lockwood true, not a bad car, I’m liking the direction he is taking it aswell tbf, however, is it really worth like 7-8 times the price of the clio? 😂
      Even like you said, there is much more bang for buck in other cars that you can get in comparison to a type r? That’s my issue with them!

    • @itsleelockwood

      The engines are one of the best na engines made, the engines are so easy to extract power from, where as the clios need thousands spend to make the same as a k20 from factory, k20s are over built and people have used that to there advantage, it was a naturally aspirated engine beating most turbod cars of its time

    I had an EP3 for 11 years and can confirm that steering is normal for the car. The steering racks are not the best and can dry up. Re greasing them can improve it a fair bit. Mine always seemed to steer better in the wet probably due to the rain water lubricating the rack. Haha

  • @KeechysCars

    The reason why they can't have more power is because as soon as you start pushing 100bhp per litre in a naturally aspirated car it becomes hard to keep the engines reliable and suitable for every day use in terms of mapping, secondly Honda knows their customers will tune their cars and want to give companies like spoon etc. the option to give people upgraded parts which at the end of this day is what these cars are about and thirdly, Honda wanted to build these cars as good handling cars that are enjoyable to drive and as soon as you add a turbo you loose that instant power that is available on a naturally aspirated car which in most people's opinion givesca better driving experience.

    the steering is a very common issue, I had a 55 plate premier 30k on it steering was the same, had to make constant corrections, sold that and got 56 plate with 17k on it and its exactly the same, found the fault, need to undo the rack boots and wash out the old grease, and refill with new grease (cant remember the grease at this moment, but not all purpose grease), basically grease dries out make the slider not slide very well, just tightens up not allowing self centre, also have to agree the brakes are not great but mine are not terrible perhaps like jesse's, overall absolute brilliant cars and have intention of selling mine

  • @Chris12211
    @Chris12211 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You don’t need a stand-alone ecu either to map these. You just buy the add on k100 Hondata board which connects to the oem ecu and it can be mapped.
    The reason it’s 200bhp is because at that time the majority of the cars were putting out around that sort of power.
    Plus it’s naturally aspirated so it’s difficult to get lots of power with out a fair few bolt ons.
    Needs mapping now he’s had all the bolt one added on to it. Gives a lower vtec point and better mid range torque.
    Steering feel isn’t as good on the ep3 compared to a dc5 due to the electric rack on a ep3 and a hydraulic rack on a dc5.

    Horsepower isn't everything. So many cars run big power and just can't use it, especially FWD. DC5 especially uses ALL of its power extremely well. After modifications and map 240-250hp is good enough NA imo. Better than spinning up in 2nd, 3rd and 4th until you gain any traction 🤷🏽‍♂️

    Have to say I completely agree,
    When I drove one the steering was numb and vague at best, the brakes were poor.
    But the engine and gearbox is absolutely superb.
    However, I have to say I much preferred my clio 182 in comparison, it was quicker, the steering felt far more responsive and the chassis was better imo.
    But with that in mind I think the Type R is a better car, more tunability and I think the k20 is better than a F4R, but I prefer the Clio 182/172 and tbh i think you probably feel the same way 👍

    • @brickhead48

      With a couple of handling mods the EP3 can be made much much better, I don't see the whole argument between the Clio and the EP3 though, both great cars from a great era of hot hatches, they were both made to be drivers cars, unlike the massive power turbo hatches of this day and age..

    Back then hot hatches were marketed more towards younger drivers, they needed to stay fuel efficient, insurable, reliable and driver friendly. Besides making 250-300hp would have really messed with the pecking order in their fleet. Making it probably more expensive and causing it to not sell as well.

  • @v1talstatistix
    @v1talstatistix 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    I'm not a fan of hondas generally but this is a terrible review from Lee. The whole lack of speed feeling is due to low torque figures.. Not the interior 😣.. And the gripe with only producing the EP3s with only 200bhp moot as, for the time period it was perfect, it kicked other hot hatches all over the place. I mean why would they release a fwd car with 400bhp stock lol, most people would die and that would desimate other cars higher up their product line. I've personally driven my friends 440bhp supercharged EP3 and that was scary but they handle it well... I know its subjective opinion based journalism but fck me lad, you're way off the mark...

      I agree the steering is weird. I also agree that the car was released under powered, specially in Europe. The brakes stock are shite but just changing a few things they improve a lot. I reckon this is a car that needs to be improved from its stock form to really start to shine whether maybe those clios he mentions are just nice out of the box.

      @@king-manu2758 Mcufre I think this is the problem saying it needed more power from factory.
      Most people are forgetting the EP3 came out, near as makes no difference, 20 years ago (2001). In light of this, ferrari was producing its top of the range model (Enzo) with 650bhp. The civic had plenty for the era... 1/3 of the power of the then supercars sounds like a good deal to me. Scale up 20 years and that's exactly what's happening with todays hot hatches... 300bhp vs the standard 1000bhp hypercars...
      The EP3 was praised for having the most power (against its rivals) from factory, back in the day... I remember as I'm old 😉
      It only needs upgrading nowadays due to being outperformed by a brand new dacia sandero 🤣

    • @king-manu2758

      @@v1talstatistix the problem is that the ep3 was released with more power in Japan. The k20 can easily give out 230bhp without any straining. They gave us a capped engine. With the fn2 it was even more glaring. They could have easily given that car the power it needed. It's understandable people get mad at it, more so considering Hondas already have a stigma of being stereotyped as slow.

    EP2 and EP3 both can suffer from degraded steering where it fails to right to centre when exiting a turn, this is a common issue and usually a fault with the steering rack.

  • @FiGuReS5040
    @FiGuReS5040 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason why the ep3 didn't came with more power is because of the gentlemen's agreement endorsed by the US and the Japanese since 1989, this agreement stated that both countries automakers wouldn't produce cars with no more than 200-276hp this would prevent competition and horsepower wars between both countries as a lead to protect citizens from illegal street racing' vehicular collisions etc. This was also based on the boom for JDM imports as the street scene in the US was becoming a usual thing, sadly the gentlemen's agreement ended in 2005 right after the premier edition was made so quite sadly the ep3 never received more hp.

    I think they come with that BHP because if they put more power through that box they'll need a stiffer harder clutch which would piss a lot of people off using it as a daily. Boosted boys also run competition clutches on their cars not the stock ones. Honda don't want people burning out clutches. I agree though they could be 300 BHP N/A from factory tho
