Thank you for the video and the specs at the end! You've gained a subscriber. I'm going to have to recap my AWE64 Gold here soon and that's very handy. The bass is getting lower in volume and the mid end is beginning to sound dull (for lack of knowing how else to put it). I think I'll go with the gold caps - that does look really cool! The caps on my card (stock) are purple; alas I can't remember the brand off the top of my head. I received the card brand new in box for Christmas a handful of years ago and finally began using it earlier this year. I was beginning to suspect capacitor issues when the left channel would gradually get quieter the longer it stayed on until the point where it was pretty much silent. After some more use, it stopped doing it so I left it alone. Now the sound quality is starting to degrade gradually.

Well this card was made on order, for the looks first not to make the audio quality better or worse really. The owner wanted gold caps all over, now "audio" caps can mean anything, there are audio caps for decoupling, audiocaps for switched power supply's etc. Audiocaps dont mean that much really. Now I f I did this my self I might go with those audicoaps for the actual audio parts of the card but for any voltage rails I would go with something else more suitable for filtering the rails. I also know people that match the caps in pairs for left and right channel. Basically you test the caps for capacity and performance and match them in pairs. This recap was mainly done to give the card the looks the owner wanted.
@ @Nitton Åttiofyra I hope that by replacing the capacitors on my card will solve the degraded sound quality I'm facing. Alas, I'm not quite sure what else could be causing the issue other than the caps. I plan on doing some more examination and troubleshooting first. I'm more concerned about the overall sound quality and fidelity rather than the looks (since I plan to do recordings for archival and casual purposes). I understand that the replacements on that card were for aesthetics rather than sound improvement - the gold colored caps do look quite nice with the card in my opinion. It'd be nice to have the best sound quality possible from the card as well as having it look cool, too. Nonetheless, I did enjoy this video and I look forward to more computer and repair related videos!
They look like symptoms of "cold" welds. You have to try resoldering and to start and test solder the audio outputs (jack or RCA connectors) It will surely improve ;) Greetings from Argentina.
With sequencer using the FM hardware synthesizer at 4-operators mode or using the Add hardware synthesizer ( it requires software that can use 4 operators instead of 2 operators ) to create quality sounds with the SPDIF output record to new high-quality sound cards or from them to the magnetic tape , can be achieved the studios quality sound Sampler EMU8000 is not recommended to use it becose has 16 bit samples, although the quality can be improved using EMU8000 DSP with controllers Non Registered Parameter Number ( NRPM ) or System Exclusive ( SysEx ) with sequencer
That looks awsome! Nicely done, and the repair work too!
The owner him self! Come and get it, or I might just keep it for my self ;)
Mmmm precious gold.
