    Your videos and tutorials for the AWE64 Gold were EXTREMELY helpful. Even when I had it back in the day I do not think I ever set it up while using Windows 95 for proper command prompt only support. Thanks to you sharing the proper files and explaining it I was able to properly set up my CT4540 AWE64 Gold I recently received today after not owning one since the late 90's. I greatly appreciate the help!

    I recently installed an AWE64 Value with a SB Live! in the same computer. It seems Creative knew some people were going to do this, as when the AWE64 is detected by the SB Live VXD drivers, it disables automatically its MS-DOS emulation part and let it fully relying on the AWE64 to do that task. It is amazing how well that combination works. Pure MS-DOS with excelent FM, bug-free MPU, and AWE features plus Windows 98 with EAX and unlimited SoundFont memory with the other Synths available. It also trully defeats the purpose of getting an expensive AWE64 Gold or AWE memory upgrades.
    I also got this fully working with an Audician 32 plus + SB live, but it was a lot harder, as i had to do some registry tweaking in order to keep SBpro/16 compatibility fully working in both cards at the same time using different resources, specially because of the FM 388 address which was not changeable and caused conflict. This combo was also not so feature rich than the AWE64+Live for DOS games, but allowed having the Live taking care of the sound effects, and the Audician only do the FM OPL syntesis in DOS games.

    This card is phenomenal. I was fortunate to find one with a Creative 4 MB upgrade module (for 8 MB total), but didn't act quickly enough to obtain a SIMCONN adapter. I bought another one in 2009 for another build when nobody wanted them ($25 at the time). They are horrendously expensive today, but, for anyone looking for one of these, a regular AWE64 also works very well, is much cheaper, and still provides AWE32 compatibility for DOS games. The AWE64 Gold has gold connectors and split RCA outputs for your speakers, but unless you have insanely sharp hearing or use headphones, I haven't noticed any significant differences in the audio quality when it comes to MS-DOS games. The Gold also has 4 MB of SoundFont RAM built-in (the regular AWE64 has only 512k), but if the goal is strictly AWE32 compatibility, you can save loads just getting a regular AWE64.

    Having built a retro gig a few years ago, i was mega lucky to have been able to buy a NOS awe 64, sealed, from the US. What hit me in the face when first using was the stereo image the card produced. I could not believe it. Stereo sounding like 3D, and that's without the 3d effect on.

    Another thing with AWE64 is that you could install an alternative driver called KX or something like that. It gave you 100% power and control over the DSP and you could design your own effects!

    I teared up when I heard the win 98 startup sound :')
    I had 98 when my brother had Vista at the time it came out.
    Sadly, my Win 98's Hdd pins broke when I was trying to put in a bigger HDD, and everything messed up. I didn't know what I was doing back then, but now I miss it T_T
    All is well~!

    I knew a few people with this card back in the late 1990s. I remember that when they used Steinberg Cubase VST with it, they had to manually and individually adjust when each sequencer audio track started, by adding a delay otherwise the tracks would play out of sync with each other! This problem was sorted when the SoundBlaster Live! came out. The other thing with the AWE64 is it was a noisy card, even for the time but it was a very good value for money card.

    In the video at around (05:30) during reconfiguration of the card, you chose option 1 which sets the MPU I/O Port to 300 instead of 330. This doesn't give a conflict. Later in the video (at around 10:33) you choose the 330 option. Just wondering is this was the cause of a crash. Or maybe you edited the video together after correcting the inital mistake.

    I can't remember if it's this or the AWE32, but I'm sure I still have one of these cards inside an old PC gathering dust in my house. I never had the heart to discard it or the PC, as it was insanely "state of the art" (I remember it also had a fancy DVD drive with cables looped around the back that played Wing Commander IV on DVD) when I first bought it many years ago.
    Came across this randomly while watching your tweak videos, and it not only made me nostalgic but made me kinda want to dig out my old hardware bits and pieces and see if any of them can be salvaged for retro purposes!

    that sound from Doom at the very end sounds quite familiar.. I had the AWE32 at the time in my first computer ever. Those were amazing times and wavetable synth MIDI was a thing. I actually LOVED to hear those sounds. Yes, they weren't incredible when looking back now but I loved how it sounded compared to FM and was very disappointed when a game had my favourite music format, MIDI, and wasn't Sound Blaster AWE compatible

      I don't know why you have compatability issues with DOS - the AWE64 is fully compatible with both AWE32 , SB16 and Pro 2.
      I played lots of games under MS-DOS 6.22 with my AWE64 when I had it - I remember, because some 3Dfx games ran better under DOS than Windows 9x - so I would dual-boot through System Commander between MSDOS6.22 and Win95/98/98SE/Me/2000....

    I bought an AWE64 CT4520 (not Gold) and I got the hanging note bug, which surprised me for such a late release card (1997 on the board). So I've gone back to my SB 16 WavEffects (CT4170). At least it doesn't suffer that particular bug.

    Great review, Phil! I love my Awe64 Gold and use it in my K6-III, Windows 98se build.

    Phils. I have a AWE32 that died. And i have a SoundBlater Live 5.1 PCI and a Yamaha 744Pro PCI. And i have a AWE64Gold (for repair, needs capacitors, but assume its good).
    What cards you will be using if you had this cards?
    Its a pentium 3 1400Mhz. Iam thinking of using only AWE64, but AWE64 missing OPL3. Yamaha 744Pro have OPL3 if iam not wrong, but its a PCI card. Maybe its a good ideia to use the Yamaha 744 Pro in Windows and AWE64 in DOS?
    Or just use AWE64 for everthing?. Pentium 3 have the power to run dosbox for some games. Other possibility is to stick with one card (for exemple AWE64) and use dosbox for "problematic" games. What are your susgestion?
    Iam trying to make a "all in one" DOS-Win9x to early XP era computer (Swap HDDs when i want another OS). I have a P3 1400Mhz, 512Mb of Ram (can take 1,5Gb) and a Geforce 4 MX440.

    These things are a lot of fun. I use All Sound Tracker and you can actually use the EMU chip and the OPL3 at the same time. Can even throw some PC speaker in there if you are feeling like it. The emu filter is weird though. It cuts volume and the resonance doesn't peak any higher than the instrument level so you have to make everything really quiet if you're using the filter. Also, the FM is my fave. I use it for recording all my AT2 songs.

    Awesome video! Thanks Phil - I always enjoy your sound videos. Could you perhaps do a video or video series on getting an MT-32 or SC-55 to work with a Yamaha YMF-718s and SoftMPU?

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evert Coetzee The only Yamaha card I have is this Audacian or something like that. That card is pretty straight forward, much easier to get going than the AWE64 Gold :) A general video about SoftMPU might be interesting though.

    • @lordmithras47
      @lordmithras47 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also have one of those Audician 32 cards. which is just a YMF-718s, from what I could gather it's very compatible with SoftMPU. But yeah, I was going to offer to send you one of my Yamaha cards if you couldn't find one - I have a YMF-718s and YMF-719. I would really like to invest in something like an MT-32 or SC-55, but because of the very high shipping costs and risks of importing it to my country, I want to be at least 99% sure of the quality before I take the plunge.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wanted to cover the Audician 32 anyway, because I got it complete, with box and drivers and I know that many have this card. It has wavetable and an external MIDI port, so it should work fine. No hanging note bug either and the output quality is very good. What's the difference with the 719?

    • @lordmithras47
      @lordmithras47 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Visually, there is no difference. The parts look to be the same on both cards with very slight PCB layout differences. I know you can use the same DOS driver on the YMF-715 to YMF-719 series, so SoftMPU will probably work fine with any of them too.

    9:30 - My first soundcard was a Gravis Ultrasound so I've dealt with worse... But this seems like a *terrible* limitation for a soundcard designed for MIDI music, to be unable to reliably emulate the (non-"smart"-mode) MPU-401 interface, which would be the most common way for games to provide MIDI music if they don't support the sound card natively.
    I have to wonder if maybe they did that on purpose to drive software authors to natively support the card instead...?

    I may have missed you mentioning this in the other AWE64 videos on your channel, but is the AWE64 100% backwards compatible with every Sound Blaster card (i.e. SB16, SB Pro etc.) that came before it?

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mostly, but not with Stereo Digital from SB Pro, it will only play Mono. Not a big deal though, as those games with Stereo FX support, have SB16 support anyway.

    • @Entrepid83
      @Entrepid83 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philscomputerlab Does that mean all games which support stereo through SB Pro were designed around mono, or just most/a lot of them were? I guess the biggest reason I'm asking is because, in first-person shooters and racing games, if there's someone approaching from the left or right, I like being able to hear which direction they're coming from for the sake of "strategic planning."

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Entrepid83 You got to realise that DOS games are ancient. Stereo sound effects, and music, is not something old games supported. Sometimes the MT-32 offered Stereo in really old games, but usually only much newer games like Descent have Stereo sound.

    i like the ct4170 the most, because it plays mostly old dos-titles and mostly all demoscene-stuff. the awe64gold has a lots of problems with dos and damascene-stuff. if you have a dual boot-machine dos/win9x driver-resources must be the same. otherwise win9x will change the configuration of the card an dafter booting dos, you have to configure the resources again. In GLdoom/heretic/hexen (win9x) the Mixerfunction does not work. You can't change the Volume of the music only. the sfx is alway effected. The CT4170 does not have this problem.

    Great Channel Phil!, I have a tough question.
    What it's better for Retrogaming (on a 486DX4-100, 64MB Ram), a SB16, AWE32 or AWE64Value?

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The chassis cable? That IS the actual speaker of the case. That doesn't go into the sound card, but you connect it to the motherboard.
      You can mod a CD Audio cable, or get something like this: www.ebay.com.au/itm/40-Way-Rainbow-Color-31cm-Flat-for-Arduino-Jumper-Cable-Wire-1P-Home-Appliance-/321819198104?hash=item4aedeb4298:g:1PwAAOSwT6pVuabI
      You just need two wires. Connect to the sound blaster and then to the two outer pins of the 4 pin PC speaker on the motherboard.

    • @NonSoloRecensioni
      @NonSoloRecensioni 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, if only I could figure out which pins on that motherboard are for the PC Speaker, I wouldn't need to redirect the PC Speaker to the audio card that way....
