    Great video on HDR composite images. Orion is a great example, trying to do the same with the Cat's Eye nebula.

    Hello, thanks for your excellent tutorials! Besides stacking, how much further do I process the 3 sets of exposures prior to combining them into an HDR image as shown here?

      None. Just stack them and then do the HDR merger as shown in this tutorial. Then proceed to process.

    Great tutorial. Is it ok to turn off dithering for the 6 and 50 second subs? How many of each?

    M31 would be the second target where this may be useful. It's core is very bright as well. Thanks for uploading.

      That's why I'm looking at this video right now - at ISO 1600 ~f/5, 450" it blows out, but some 100" exposures brought it down nicely

    Is this possible with shorter exposure times? Like 4 sec, 30, and 50?

      It's been a while since I've worked with this stuff, but I think it should be. Just need three different exposures.

    What was the numeric relation between 6s, 50s and 300s?
    For instance: How many 6ers did you take for how much 50ies etc. Could you calculate a proportion of the exposure lengthes to each other?

      Hey, sorry but I've unfortunately been out of the astro game for a while so I don't think I can accurately answer your question. Just thinking off the top of my head - You don't need as many of the faster exposure images because they will have less sensor noise.

    Tried this method but came to the conclusion it is much easier to strech in two steps. 1. Until core is fine. 2. Final with the core masked (range selection). Assuming it is not burned out.

      @@designbydave thank you. One more ,why are you using 3 different exposure when it didn't work and then you had to use the extra hdr process after that. The second process is fixing the core , so do I need to merge those 3 files before?.thank you

    I know this is a bit old(i'm looking a pixinsight videos to learn how to use it) and awesome pic of the nebula, that's what i'm aiming for as a beginner but... do the star spikes appear by default? Around 6:37.. What do you use to make them look like that? Thanks.

      Those are diffraction spikes caused by the secondary mirror holder of my telescope. They are an aberration, although look cool so people tend to like them. There is software that can fake it if you want to add them.

      @@JulioCruzcoach Yes. All telescopes with a secondary mirror support produce these, even the Hubble Space Telescope. It's technically a flaw in the optical design.

    How did you end up with diffraction spikes if using a DSLR?

      Diffraction spikes are an optical aberration caused by the secondary mirror holder arms (the spider) of a reflector telescope and independent of the image sensor being used.

    I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but every time I try it gives me posterized HDR image with all the blacks clipped.

      Jarrett Trezzo I suspect it might be related to one or more of your source images being non-linear

      That makes sense but I double checked and they are both still stacks in linear state. I used the default and played around with the settings on HDRComp with the similar results. I'll have to play around with it some more with single FITS files and see if it works. Thanks.
