Tune-bot toms with settings

  • In this video I tune a Pearl MCX Custom 10 , 12, and 14 inch tom using a Tune-bot to specific notes and show you the frequency, notes, and how awesome it sounds. Tuning your drums to perfect 4ths is a great way to set up your kit for live shows or band practice.
    I am playing Remo and Evans heads in this video, Sabian Cymbals, and Los Cabos drum sticks.
    There is minimal processing done, A small notch at 500hz to keep the drums sounding natural. VERY minimal compression and that is pretty much it. Mics are CAD PRO 7 into a Presonus 16.0.2 mixer. Nothing fancy and the drum heads are over a year old.

    Awesome tutorials! I used to tune my toms very low and punchy with my Evans EC2 heads and maple toms but they didn't really cut through loud mixes, I'll definitely try this out in the future! Probably going to buy a tune-bot as well to help me get to these exact notes faster and easier! Definitely earned a new sub!

    I want to say a very big thank you for this tutorial! I have the same sizes, but Evans UV 2's on toms and my drums sound awesome! Nothing's choked - just nice, fat tone with a good amount of resonance.
    Not sure if this is gonna be useful to someone, but on my other kit (different wood and heads) i used this tuning too, but i tuned my 16 inches floor tom to 98 batter and 159 reso. I did this trying to make sound good in combination with the other toms, tuned using your method and man, that floor tom was thunderous!

    • @beyondbetrayal

      I have never used the UV2 heads. I tune all kits the same pretty much though. I might go different in single ply but for dual ply heads it's the same. I always have my resos higher than my batters. Floor tom I may invert that if it rings out too much, or if it just feels too boomy, or impossible to play on.

    I watched your drum dial video before this one and I'm curious what the drum dial settings are to match this interval of 4ths, I play a lot of shows with multiple bands so the drum bot I borrowed st a show simply never worked out with all the ambient noise of other bands so I went back to my drum dial, but now I'm looking to swap heads to a different thickness on the resonant and curious if you've done such a thing of using both tools to get consistency in a live setting

    • @beyondbetrayal
      @beyondbetrayal  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tensions will be difffernt with a thicker head, using the tunebot should get you the same "note" I find it quite consistent to tune to my previous settings.

  • @MikeD606
    @MikeD606 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Question: shouldn't you tune the lugs a tiny bit higher because the center of the head (where you actually hit when playing) is a bit lower?

    • @beyondbetrayal
      @beyondbetrayal  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Use the tunebot calculator on their site or the phone app. Basically, with a 10 inch tom for example. there is the fundamental note of the head, and lug pitch. You tune the lugs to a certain pitch and that sets the fundamental note of the drum.

      Unfortunately you don't "set the Tunebot". Rather you need to let it capture a 196 Hz reading by adjusting a lug, then Store that into one of the storage locations for drums.

      beyondbetrayal I still can’t get my TM2 module quite dialed in.. mind you, I’m running it to a Roland kd120 kick drum... I’ve never tried it on an acoustic kick with a trigger on the rim. Maybe that’s why I’m running into issues... my main issue is it is not picking up all my notes. Settings are identical to what 99% of people have them at... but those 99% of people aren’t running it through an ekit kick drum.

      This was almost 3 years ago. I don't remember the notes. The toms were 10,12,14 though. I talk about the notes in the video however. On the tunebot website/app there is a calculator you punch in your drum sizes, resonance you want, and if you want your resos/batters higher or lower. I always tune my resos a bit higher. Stick to pretty high resonance usually works the best. It's easy to put a moongel on to dampen them.

      snare is about 380-410 reso head depending on the sanre. Tighter reso, less overtones, don't go too much or you will choke the drum. Batter I go about 300-350.......... once again, preference is huge here. do you want deep sounding or a higher pitch crack and more rebound.. Bass is an odd one. I have mine tight for rebound but use triggers. If not basicly just above wrinkles with a towel/pillow inside. I'll adjust the batter for rebound. Sometimes just a few 1/4 turns on the reso too.
