Something to be said here about vocal intensity. You dont have to be a great singer and belt everything out, this a prime example of a good singer whos relaxed and doesnt hit every note perfectly.
i think the imperfections in his singing really tie it together, makes it more intimate, especially with the more emotional tones of their music

These fellows are incredible. One part of this song (a guitar part) seems to be a nod to Archers of Loaf. Does anyone else hear that? I hope it is, because it adds yet another aspect to the reasons why I think they're so good, a glancing influence (because it's just a small part of the whole, nothing else would make me think of Archers), an historical context maybe?

Oh man, so true! I didn't think of that until I read your comment. These guys are steeped in musical history. Kinks, Archers of Loaf, etc. all in a stew pot making something new.
why does bassists on indie bands always look so bored ?
Not bored, just concentrating.
As the bass line you have to be in time, but still playing the right notes, and it can be hard to hear the bass over the rest of the band sometimes. Also they may be listening to the rest of the band jamming because the song is good and bass lines can be really repetitive. Then it becomes a constant battle to keep playing the song instead of getting lost listening to the song.
