      In terms of information about general health as well as diabetes treatment method, I find this DiabetesTreatment48.blogspot.com easy to follow and extremely sensible. Through this program, you could change your diet and lifestyle without being particular about your carb or calorie. My transition to a healthier lifestyle has not just helped me shed pounds but also recover from diabetic issues as well as high blood pressure! It`s factual that you truly could change diabetes..?

      @mod trend the oatmeal breakfasts with no big spikes that Mic showed are pretty high in carbs.

    • @SoloUnAnimal
      @SoloUnAnimal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @mod trend well, I'd be willing to bet a large sum of money that anyone who lives a long time and doesn't get killed by someone or an accident, will die of some disease some day. No surprise there. As for your guarantees, I'd refer to science: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5466941/
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30229314

    • @SoloUnAnimal
      @SoloUnAnimal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @mod trend or how do I explain my meat-eating grandparents' deaths from chronic disease at their early sixties? Or Esselstyn's apparent very good health at 85? You could add Colin Campbell there too, also 85.
      Or you could read why and how anecdotes are not a reliable source of evidence when compared to cohort or clinical studies.
      Although if you disregard the latter and use quotations to imply they are not scientific, I wonder what's your basis to "guarantee" that all vegans will get fatal diseases because of "high insulin/glucose spikes".
      Care to share that evidence here?
      In any case, you *can* be unhealthy and vegan, no controversy there. You can eat mostly refined and processed foods, lots of sugar, salt, edible oils, not get enough b12 or omega3's, and make a lot of unhealthy choices unrelated to your diet.
      Do you agree that's pretty different from what' being advocated as a whole-food plant-based diet here? The term vegan only tells you what somebody doesn't eat, not what s/he eats, drinks, smokes or anything else.

    • @SoloUnAnimal
      @SoloUnAnimal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @mod trend You started off by equating the sugar spikes of eating bananas or pizza (white flour) with any "high carb meals". I pointed out that Mic's high-carb oatmeal breakfast did not and usually does not cause sugar spikes, because of its low glycemic index, in spite of its high carbohydrate content. To which you don't reply directly, but choose to keep talking about "dangerously high levels" of blood sugar, that, according to you, follow the consumption of "most plant based fruits, starches and grains".
      You have not provided any evidence of this. But despite that, you go on to claim that vegans "will die of some disease some day" and "guarantee" it most likely will be because of high insulin/glucose spikes, unavoidable on a vegan diet, as you seem to believe. Of course, again, you provide no evidence to back it up.
      I then link to scientific papers showing the protective effects of plant-based diets against type 2 diabetes (which is the exact *opposite* of what you claimed.) And how do you respond? That a vegan guy died age 66... OF A HEART ATTACK!
      See what you do? You make unsubstantiated claims, make no effort to back them up with any data, and then change the subject completely, take an anecdote to make a claim about an unrelated subject, and start talking about what "you vegans" do or say, when I haven't even said that "meat causes disease". This is not how a reasonable conversation is supposed to take place.

      @@kulataHi, diabetic here. I have better results with HIGH CARB LOW FAT!! The proof is in the numbers.
      I did keto, I ended up with pancreatitis and blood sugars in the 300s! Cholesterol through the roof. I couldn’t eat any carbs at all. Life sucked and I was in so much pain. Eating 30 grams or less, about 10 per meal at the time, maybe up to 50 on occasion.
      I would never recommend low carb to a diabetic. It’s just continuing to break their metabolism. The longer I’m doing this, the more carbs I can eat because I’m fixing my body rather than pouring fuel (fat) on the fire. I went from 3 diabetes medications to 1, I’m soon to be none as my average glucose is down to 117 ON A HIGH CARB DIET. Let me say that again, I, a brittle diabetic, have a average blood glucose of 117 today due to a high carb diet. Did you hear me yet?

    PS Dr Greger recently posted a video that talks about how beans and legumes have the "second meal" effect. Eating beans will keep your blood sugars regulated far longer most other foods, and you can even see the results of that the next morning! That might have been what you were seeing with the Ethiopian meal.

    I did the same tests after meals to find which foods spiked my blood sugars. I stopped eating as much fruit as I was for breakfast. I had a couple 200 levels after eating a banana, some grapes and a couple of nectarines first thing. My standard meal of steamed brussel sprouts, broccoli, mushrooms, onions, carrots, green beans, and rice or potato, usually only spiked at 150. Not bad for 63 year old with less than half a pancreas. I've been fighting stage four pancreatic cancer for six years. I've had four major abdominal surgeries and two rounds of Y90 glass beads. I'm sort of a science experiment with all the spare parts removed; 5/8 of my pancreas, spleen, one foot of upper colon, 8 inches of lower colon, gallbladder, appendix, 5/8 of liver, twenty lymph nodes, part of left kidney, and a half dozen small tumors off my pelvic wall.
    The crazy thing is I have no side effects from all these parts missing. I went plant based 90 days ago and I've lost 25 pounds, my cholesterol went from 255 to 155, LDL went from 158 to 78. I never feel hungry between meals and feel like I'm twenty years old again. My last two scans found a couple small tumors in my liver but are growing very slowly. It will be interesting to see on my next scan if they have grown any since I went plant based....

    Bananas and mangoes are one of the worse offenders to raise blood sugar rapidly. I had saw another video with a diabetic with controlled sugar . He saw his blood sugar raise to 210 mg /dL from around 110 in half an hour with just 2 bananas . He did another video with one banana , one apple and one mango with him and his wife ( who isn’t diabetic) . Not only he got again a rise into the 210 ( from around 90) . But her had a rise to 180 ( from a normal 82 ) in half an hour.

    I found your video very interesting. I’ve been a t1 diabetic for over 30 years. I liked being able to see how a non diabetic’s blood sugar reacted to different meals. I wanted to reach through the screen to help you test your sugar but you figured it out. For several months now I have been using a continuous glucose monitor called the Dexcom G6. It has a sensor that attaches to you and you get a display of your sugar every 5 minutes. There’s also a less expensive but not as versatile (in my opinion) option called the Freestyle Libre. I think it would be very interesting to see you on one of those, but they’d both be a bit expensive to try. Anyway, I just wanted to mention one more thing. So many things can influence your response to different foods. I find breakfast influences lunch, lunch influences dinner and so on because my insulin and food have not completely left my system by the time I’m ready for my next meal. Perhaps that’s why some of your results weren’t consistent. Thanks for the video and keep up the great work.

    Hi Mic...Love your channel. In one of your blood sugar tests with a couple bananas, apple, and peach (I believe) your blood sugar spiked to 204, but other foods showed good blood glucose control. If I may suggest, it is most likely one of those foods are a "trigger" for you. The only time my blood sugar rises to over 130 is when I eat sweet potato for breakfast...then it rises to about 155. My last A1c was 5.1 and I've been a vegan (except for the occasional unavoidable cheese) for 50 years and my yearly complete blood work lab tests (required for my job) have always come back "text book perfect" for over 30 years. I will be 70 in a couple months, but am more active than most people half my age (heading out right now for some mountain biking). I suggest you take a look at this study: Personalized Nutrition by Prediction of Glycemic Responses. Cell, 2015

      @@ravireddyism More than adequate protein is obtained from a diet rich in nuts, beans, and whole grains. Olive oil and some coconut supply the essential omega components. Many top athletes are vegan or vegetarian. Check out "Blue Zones", which details how beans are the one food that all the longest lived people seem to have in common. In my opinion, though, whether you are a vegan or not, the most important factor is staying away from processed foods...I really do believe processed foods are behind the epidemic of obesity and health problems that are so prevalent in America. Now 73, my last set of bloo
      dwork still came back "textbook perfect". My doctor keeps ordering all these tests every year for my annual physical. She doesn't believe in a vegetarian diet and keeps thinking that there must be something wrong with me. Lol.

      Don't give up. My blood sugar was off the charts crazy high. 500+ I had to defy my doctor to try to get it under control through vegan diet alone when he wanted to send me to the hospital. I'm still diabetic but mostly in the 150-225 range with brief spikes in the 300's that drop after a couple hours but the trend is getting better. On my good days I'm down to 117 or so. I read Dr Jason Fung's books The Obesity Code, and the Diabetes Code and watched his interviews on youtube. I only eat one or two meals a day most days within a four to six hour period which helped a lot. Drinking a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar mixed in tomato juice before I eat also seems to make a difference. I did a 12 day water fast and my blood sugar was down to 105 after five days but went back up after I began eating again. I've since done a few 24 to 48 hour fasts which always get my blood sugar down to the 105-117 range. I've probably been diabetic over ten years so it isn't going to be fixed overnight. I think it just takes time and persistence.

The 500+ blood sugar test at the Doctors office was a wake-up call. I'll probably owe my life to the Vegan You tubers if I get past this but it seems it's never too late to start living healthy as long as you're still breathing.

    • @ajay97005

      I don't know... I'm pretty new to healthy living heh. I've watched hours of interviews with doctors who advocate high fat low carb.. or high carb low fat and insist the opposing viewpoint is wrong. I tried Paleo once and lost weight. The take I get from the debate is that both approaches work in lowering blood sugar it's when you mix a lot of sugar and a lot of fat that you are in trouble. The advantage seems to be with the vegans though... meat brings with it a lot of other health issues... I didn't even give any thought to possible ethical issues until I started watching the Vegan TH-camrs and I'm still not sure how I feel about it... but you can be high fat low carb on a vegan plant based diet if you want to go that route. I just try to keep all the processed food out of my diet now. I'm not a good cook and I get bored with eating salad so it's hard for me to stick to it but I try. Somewhere along the line somebody said processed oils are bad because they are almost always rancid by the time you consume them. I take that to mean get your oil from eating coconuts, avocados, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, ripe olives etc... I'm pretty sure we need some oil in our diets but I don't think we need processed oil.

  • @Lemonz1989
    @Lemonz1989 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've had type 1 diabetes for 14 years, so I've been through a few meters over the years. The "no coding" thing is something that we had to do in the "olden days". :P Most monitors don't need it anymore.
    It basically just means that for every new box of test strip you opened, you got a special strip that you had to use first in the meter before testing your blood. That strip had maybe the code "10" (it was usually a two or three digit number) and when you stuck the strip in the meter, it set the meter to the code 10. This allowed the meter to use all the blood test strips in the package that had the code 10 written on. If you didn't correctly code your meter before using new strips, then you couldn't rely on the accuracy of the blood tests. :)
    Just a fyi, when you test your fingers, you need to wash or lick (I know, gross) your fingers before bleeding, because if you've touched anything sweet before, then it will influence the result. Also, only the little, ring and middle finger are recommended to be used. I use my left ring finger the most. It's also easier and causes less pain when you stab yourself on the side of the pad and on right on top of the pad. And you also have to push upwards towards the hole you just poked, in a "milking" motion so you increase the blood pressure at the tip of the finger. :)
    Another note I would like to add. Bananas are crazy fast acting carbs - almost as fast as regular candy. It's literally withing 2 to 5 minutes that you can see a difference. I have a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) as well, so I can see what my BG is 24/7 so I see all those weird ups and downs that can happen. I can't eat more than half a banana at a time, because the synthetic insulin I use doesn't act fast enough to catch the spike if I eat more. The "pressure" you were feeling very well may be the blood sugar spike. I can feel "pressure" or tightness in my muscles (especially in my legs) when my blodsugar goes over 10 or 11 mmol/L (180 to 200 mg/dL).

    I ate an almost 100% fruit diet from June 2017 to October 2017, and felt amazing doing it. I just turned 40, my father's a diabetic, my sister just had gestational diabetes...and my A1C in October was 4.3 (ave BS 76). This December 2017 I added in some starches as optimal fruit options diminished, and when I had my A1C checked in March 2018 it was 4.6 (ave BS 86). I've never done on the spot post prandial checks but I have to say my experience has only been positive eating primarily fruit...no crashes, good energy, high vibe...and still only needing to eat 2, sometimes 3 times a day with 16 to 18 hour fasts. And for what it's worth my triglycerides were 74 at that time. Just thought I'd share my experience. Seems like a shame to vilify fruit after 2 readings, and you're just assuming which one was the "wrong" one. I'm an RN, and after I clean someone's finger with alcohol I wipe it dry before testing since the alcohol sugars can technically effect a reading. Not sure what you cleaned your fingers with, but just a thought on how simple things can make a difference.

    Hi Mic, a blood glucose meter measures glucose, and not fructose which is the sugar in fruit, but fruit does have carbs. I did 1 week fruit only, and my blood sugar levels were in the 80s and 90s that week and hadn’t been under 103 in 2 decades when I had my routine tests, it was more like 115 - 136 those years. Next time I have a routine lab test scheduled I will eat only fruit for one or two days. I also found eating late at night increases my morning blood sugar. I have also been drinking 8 oz fresh grapefruit juice I juice I. My citrus juicer with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar the last 8 months, and that is what started me on the fruit journey. I had always believed to much fruit bad for you, but just the opposite. Also make sure to get a good blood glucose monitor. I used the FreeStyle Lite, my first one was 15 -20 or more points off. Just to note I am not diagnosed as diabetic, was just doing routine testing like you.

    Very interesting. You should also account for hydration in your results. There is such a thing as relative hyper and hypo blood levels due to hydration levels. (I’m an RN in hot and humid Miami and fluid balance plays a big part in diabetes management here) Also, the reason you can fast and not bottom out is because you have preserved insulin receptors and your body actually knows when to tap into your glycogen stores. Per the ADA-Diabetes and obesity is caused by insulin resistance which is the build up of animal fats in cells that are not meant to store it. This causes insulin levels to rise and glucose levels in the blood to rise because it cannot enter into the cells. Same diets for 60 years!. Atkins, south each, zone diet, paleo, ketogenic, carnivore, lion. All have the same effect and increase levels on insulin resistance.

I get nauseated and my energy levels completely tank. It's even worse when it's in liquid form. And trust me I've tried adding blueberries or raw chocolate powder, and it doesn't help with the nausea. So I only eat maybe a couple of bananas a day, sometimes with a nutbutter, and that helps. I also can't eat cooked oats; and overnight oats sometimes push it. Another nausia/drop of energy issue. I have been tested for diabetes more times and I can explain. I am not diabetic. The GlykoMark test is the best for showing those hidden spikes. It won’t tell you numbers but it shows how your body is responding to glucose levels, and if there are a lot of peaks and valleys that aren’t showing up on finger sticks. The A1C was always the standard but combined with the glykomark you can really understand your control as a diabetic. For example I had an A1c of 5.2 which for a type 1 is rockstar level! But my glykomark showed I was having a lot of spikes. My finger sticks we’re catching the lows after the spike. This helped me refine my dietary choices to optimize my glucose levels. I don’t know how the glykomark would work for a non-diabetic but it might be something to look into. Unless you can borrow someone’s continuous glucose monitor for a week. Then you’d see everything.

I've been more on the keto/carnivore. I started a 48 hr fast a few weeks ago and my glucose at the beginning was 128, I checked it after 24 hrs and it was 110, at the end it was 98. They say the ketone will release glucose on their own. I never got to 90. I can go 24 hrs on a regular basis without eating when I just stick to a high fat low carb diet. O and my blood pressure has dropped considerably since I got off sugar and went to internet fasting went keto. 🙃

      Yeah if you have a fasting blood sugar of 128 and it takes 24 hours just to get to 110 then that's a red flag that your insulin resistant which keto has been shown over and over again from my observation to not fix, any fasting (3+ hours after a meal) blood sugar of over 100 is already considered of impaired insulin sensitivity.

    I’ve been eating a mostly plant based diet for the past 2 weeks now, and the effect on my blood sugar levels has been amazing. I’m a type 1 diabetic, so this has benefited me immensely. My average blood glucose has been 110 mg/dL for the past two weeks (as told by information from my continuous glucose monitor), and those are numbers that diabetics only usually dream of. Despite still eating tons of carbs, my body does not react to the same way. Now my blood sugar “spikes” end up in the 180s, instead of 300+. I’m seeing massive health benefits from switching to a plant based diet, and I finally feel like I’m sticking by my morals as well. Thank you for being such a great part in the vegan community, and for helping to educate everyone who comes in contact with you videos. You’re awesome!

    Interesting how well your body reacted to the Ethiopian food. Did you have them change anything when you ordered it, because Ethiopian stews/sauces are typically cooked with clarified butter and oils?

    Blood glucose levels are naturally higher in the morning for everyone, so the same carbs eaten at breakfast vs eaten in the afternoon may affect your blood sugar differently. I use an insulin pump and have a totally different level basal insulin throughout the day, and also my carb to insulin ratio is highest at breakfast and then drops off throughout the day as my sensitivity and activity level increases

    That's why I eat plenty of fruit to stabilize my blood glucose levels so I won't binge eat from having a sugar crash.
    That's probably why I've lost 24 kilograms in the last couple of months, my aim is to drop down from 93 kilos down to 75 as I still have a bit of fat on my hips.
    Most of the weight I've lost has been from my butt & thighs,I have lost about an inch of fat from my waist.

    I had same mitigated results with morning fruit salads breakfasts :
    Some days, my blood sugars was super stable and stayed under 100, some other days I had a spikes over 150 ..... All that with the same kind and amount of fruits....
    It seems a lot of things can influence the blood sugar response of a meal , including :
    - the previous meal
    - how well we slept at night
    - last time we exerciced
    - ....
    Anyway , it's nice to experiment by ourself ;)

    Yes, you must have missed the high spike with the first set of bananas! They are definitely a higher glycemic count. People with diabetes are advised to eat either no bananas or never more than a half banana.

    Hey Mic, LearningtobeFearless has recently decided she wants to loose weight. She’s using weight watchers. Weight watchers works on a point system; certain “healthy” foods such as eggs are zero points as a way to encourage users to eat more healthy foods. Things like turkey bacon are also low in points. Can you do a video on how much of a disservice weight watchers is doing?

    You should wait at least 90 minutes after eating to capture a blood glucose spike. Thirty minutes is not enough.

    Eating only simple sugars like bananas and other fruits gives a tonne of energy fast, but you'll burn that up in no time and end up hungry for more within two hours sometimes even faster, that's exactly my experience too. So if I want to stay raw during the day I eat sprouted buckwheat, quinoa, seeds, beans and lentils to keep satisfied longer, also, beans reduce the sugar spike from simple sugars.

    • @bodhati11poorplayer29

      why you think, you "burn(t) that up in no time" ? more likely, you ate yourself hungry. i experience the same (from high carb meals in general, but especially after bananas), and i more and more wonder, whether this actually can be good.

    Caretouch comes with a calibrated standard. Insert that first. Every batch of test strips comes with one. If you don’t use the calibrated standard, the meter uses the last known standard as a background.

    Quick tip: if you're struggling to get blood after "stabbing" yourself, place your hand in warm water for a minute or two just to heat it up. (Increased circulation etc.) You wont have to squeeze.
