Very interesting breakdown. As a DAL fan, I was hoping for Aatu Raty as he was (at one time) considered to be a potential First Overall. His stock took a rather substantial drop leading up to the NHL Draft. I have a feeling that while we reached at #23 with Wyatt Johnston, we got an absolute steal at #47 with Logan Stankoven. I see why they drafted them, as they were linemates on CAN's U18 Team, which won gold in Texas, so it was easy for our scouts to stay home while scouting whom we wanted. There's more than a few experts who say that Stankoven had first round talent. So I look at it as DAL could've actually swapped the picks (Stank in 1st, Wyatt in 2nd) & got whom we wanted, but it worked out either way. I'm happy with our selections, regardless. I'm hoping the big Russian DMan Artem Grushnikov is something of a Sergachev-lite (although nowhere near as offensively skilled) but I see why they went that route considering we just lost Oleksiak to SEA. Anyways, great insight, as always. Thanks for doing it. And Go Stars!

Really loved Waddell's pick management. Trading down and having four picks in the second round, using three, and picking up who I believe are two absolute studs in Heimosalmi and Koivunen. Waddell and the scouting team in Carolina seems to know what they're doing.
I thought the Red Wings drafted for depth though out the draft. They picked for depth in defensemen. Plus the forwards they took in later rounds, weren't considered great scoring threats. But they were considered leaders on their teams, in the comments from the panelists. The Red Wings may have gotten a lot of third or fourth line player prospects. But you need those types of players in difficult situations in games.
@@badm0t0rf1ng3r if he was a quality d- man he would've been on our roster instead of Alex biega. Cholo is fine on the powerplay but can't actually play D. If he succeeds in the league it will be as a sheltered sixth D who also runs the second pp unit
Depth!? Its more of need than BA. Yzerman values character over 'talent' as work ethic does much better in the playoffs than that talent. Lol! This is why he went with Cossa and not Wallstedt, and why he went with Seider back in '19. Turns out, he knew what he was doing as Seider is considered the best prospect in hockey.
I would love to see data on just how accurate these "scouting services" are. Has anyone ever gone back and looked at it? I think most of the teams' scouts have a better idea of what they need, and who fits in their organization, than do these outsiders.
Laughed my ass off when you said the 3rd Hughes brother could come to the devils. It's a dream, the next instalment of the stall brothers .... think I missed a pun there but it's early. Good breakdown! Devils prospect pool on paper looks very very good. shame about bastain, fee like our second pick in the draft was to replace that loss maybe, although Stillman is a RW too?
Biggest reach was Wyatt Johnson for Dallas - they could have traded back to the 2nd and still got the player while getting more capital imo. Biggest steals were Brandt Clarke to LA (I had him top 3), and Jesper Wallstedt to the Wild (I had him top 10). Happy with the Avs pick, and their draft overall too. Interested to see how these players develop over the next few years now due to the oddity of the year we just had and seeing how that might have affected the scouting/picks.
I just posted about DAL's draft in that I feel that they could've actually swapped the picks (Stankoven in 1st, Johnston in 2nd) & still got whom they wanted, as I felt Stankoven is actually a 1st Rd talent, but I'm just happy it worked out the way it did & we got whom we wanted. Either way, it's clear what the Dallas brass was looking to do, in keeping that Canada U18 line together in Logan & Wyatt. The U18's were held in Frisco, so it was easy for the Dallas scouts to stay at home to do their scouting. Those kids were there, & we wanted them. How often can we scout kids in our own backyards? I agree Wyatt was a reach, but it couldn't have worked out any better. We got them both & that's what matters to me right now.
I really like the Tyler Boucher pick. He's big and can skate fast and drive play. I've read people saying they saw him knock 4 people over in a shift and then scored the next he will be interesting to see.
He had knee injuries this year, lower overall offensive ceiling than Lucius sillinger coronato and others still available. 2 high caliber goalies available. I'm smh
@@cyber151 Exactly. I complained about it, and my friends started saying "oH sHuT uP, hEs gOoD", But when you have those other type of people available, why take a risk? WHY NOT JUST DRAFT THE CONCENSUS PLAYERS OF THE EXPERTS RATHER THAN A THIRD ROUNDER
Because the only thing Ottawa is missing is physical forwards. Rankings are stupid, maybe instead of just making fun of your friends and just looking at a number and just copying what one person said you should look into the prospect and maybe you would realize your friends are right. Boucher dropped because of an injury and covid and he’s also a physical player and all the physical guys dropped because the teams couldn’t do physical testing. He still put up a point per game even though that’s not what he excels at. Also the Rangers and flames were apparently gonna take him too and no one is a guaranteed to be good player. Just ask Edmonton and Nail Yakupov
Because we already have goalies and great offensive players and a lot of defensive prospects coming up. Only thing missing is a top centre which wasn’t available and then physical middle 6 forwards. He probably wouldn’t have got to the second round as atleast two other teams were reportedly gonna take him and the only reason he’s ranked low is the injury and the fact that he’s a physical player and the teams couldn’t do physical testing.
@@sully_99 ok time out. "Rankings are stupid....looking at a number what one person said." Those rankings are the analysis of hundreds of scouts. They are not stupid and they are not just the view of one person. "Great offensive talent" Oh you mean Stutzle? Hes one guy. Tkachuk hasnt had a 60 point season just yet and will need a 1C to push him there. Norris has exceeded projections so let's hope he still has yet another level, because otherwise hes a 2c be forced to play top center. I love Batherson but hes not an elite goalscorer or playmaker. So of our entire youth pool only Stutzle has elite line 1 skill. That's one guy and if he stays left wing, we likely dont have a true 1c. And to trade for one is expensive. At pick 10 you had scoring centers like Lucius and Sillinger. Or at rw the best pure shooter in coronato. And we took a guy who's dad said this yr he had "two different knee injuries" who most scouts say hes a 3rd liner if he hits his ceiling, a "complementary player" who you could put in the top 6 to wreak havoc and create space. ..... no. We needed the higher ceilings. If we had a 1c then fine. But Norris likely isnt it. And our best hope was... logan brown...and he really isnt planning out. The 1c position has a giant hole, and 4 yrs into this rebuild we havent secures it. Norris Pinto as you top centers ain't good enough. Great blueline of the future if we take our time with Sanderson Jbd etc. In net Gustavsson (maybe is improving now?) Sogaard is trending up. But at 1c, and line 1 type players in general we got Stutzle. Not enough to justify going off board and using 10 on a guy rated 28 to 50. 😡
@@APJTA The Flames need him desperately. I really really hope he doesn't spend his time in University hockey for a year or 2 then go off to sign with a different NHL team. I would be so disappointed.
@@christiantaillon2930 Gotta bear in mind that Tkachuk had already played a year in the OHL, though. Coronato is in the USHL, which is an easier league than the OHL. It's rare for guys to jump from the USHL to the NHL. One of the big reasons guys play USHL is precisely so they can keep their NCAA eligibility. Depending on how his year goes, Matthew might be able to sign his ELC at the end of his freshman year.
The draft is a crap shoot just because Craig buttons said a prospect is going to be a star does not make it so, that why each team has to trust their scouting department not to depend on these so called experts! Example( Moritz Seider) went higher in the draft and it was a good called by Stevie Y.
I dont think its a bad idea to include expert rankings (im sure they would have analysis with it) in your draft process but it should only be a piece of the puzzle or a tool. Teams have their own scouts as a tool to draft players so they certainly should trust what their scouts are doing. And for all we know some of the scouts that are on teams could even be part of the experts that do the rankings. Just saying I would use every available resource to draft if I were a GM
I noticed during the TV presentation of the draft that the screen shot accompanying each team displayed their last few draft picks. Most names on the lists were of players who never made it to the NHL. Drafting 18 year olds is indeed a crap shoot which is why I like them drafting 18 year olds.
Exactly, I was high on eklund as a ducks fan and was a little worried after the mctavish pick. But then I saw 3 other GMs pass on him including Stevie Y. Every ducks fan over reacted but you just gotta trust the system. Madden ran this years draft for us and he's the one behind getting Gibson and rakell in the second round. To also add to that apparently they did try to trade down but murray said the returns weren't high enough and it was too risky to lose mctavish so apparently other GMs had him high
I will defend Trent Mann to the day I die. I will preface by saying his track record is far too strong for 1 or 2 high draft busts to change my mind on that. Allegedly, the Rangers were in on Boucher at 15. Had the Sens traded down, they probably don't get Boucher. Trent Mann also said that the public rankings don't have all the details and that he was confident he was going to be taken in the 10-20 range. Boucher also dropped in projections due to injuries and pneumonia but is said to be 100% now. Another thing that sells me is that Brady Tkachuk is fond of the pick. Boucher's father says teams ranked at 13-16 were also interested in him and had interviewed him. At the end of the day, sens fans got upset about Tkchuk and Pinto being drafted and yet they have panned out so far. I look at players like Batherson who were drafted in the 4th round to summarize Trent Manns' record. I think it's fair to also say in this draft, it's okay to take low risks with high rewards.
@@jasoncoladonato1034 I damn hope so. He is written up as a flashy, skillful winger. With Giroux entering his twilight Toumala sounds like just what our future needs

Lucius was an interesting pick, since we already got enough centers on this team with Scheifele, Dubois, Lowry, Copp and Perfetti. But gotta take the best player available.
San Jose’s #1 pick was beniers but obviously he was taken at two overall. San Jose’s second choice was actually Eklund and they were surprised he fell to 7. They were going to trade up to get him but it did not need to happen
Every year, I get more and more impressed at the 2003 draft picks. Such an insane draft year. Would be interesting having a video of how many potential players that are close or will be in the nhl hall of fame.
So glad the Bruins got Fabian Lysell. Easily the best prospect we’ve had in a while. Love most of their other picks in this draft as well. Donnie did well.
Buffalo at 13 should of took a goalie aka cossa. Powers and cossa would of been huge backbone. Especially since next year draft is loaded at forwards. Let both go back to college and sign next year to initial contracts. Really show how bad Adams is
The Cossa vs Wallstedt debate is something I'm very excited to see how it will pan out. Minnesota is better at developing goaltenders too but Detroit must believe that Cossa is substantially better so we'll see. That being said, I don't necessarily think a player's potential matters, they really need to get developed in the right environment and culture. I think that has more of an effect than just "oh this player is more skilled at x or x than this player." Also lowkey hoping Quinn reunites with his brothers in NJD (sorry Shannon) but that would be fun. All these brothers on the same team must be so nice from their POV.
As a die hard Kings fan, I will be paying more attention on Mctavish and Eklund. These two will might be problems that Kings have to deal with sooner than later.
Yeah and the ducks and sharks are going to have to deal with Byfield Turcotte and Kaliyev, now we have our future #1 D. Not too worried about the ducks or sharks rn lol
Its not a bad draft but an unpredictable draft since certain leagues didnt get to start up and scouting was limited to basically video only until the very end of the year.
In the first round, I think Wallstedt, Eklund and Lysell are the biggest steals. In the entire draft, I think it's Räty. I still can't believe that so many teams wouldn't even gamble a 2nd round pick on him.
NHL central scouting had Beniers at 6th among NA skaters and McTavish as 2nd among NA skaters. It's clear that scouting is in great part highly subjective
I've got an idea for a video for you: Top 5 or top 10s from past drafts, who they were compared to by scouts at the time of the draft and how those picks panned out ultimately. The 1999 Draft would be an interesting starting point, given that the Sedins were picked by Vancouver and became Hall of Famers, while the guy picked at number 1 was the infamous bust that is Patrik Stefan. Or you could rank the biggest draft busts since you started watching hockey. Or you could compare the Canucks drafting record by GM and who has the best success rate (spoiler alert: Benning, for better or worse, is likely the best drafting GM in Canucks history LOL). If you need any liquid assistance to complete this, I'm more than happy to make a contribution towards such a video. You're the best, Shannon.
I'm anxious to know what you think about Arizonas draft overall. And I'll curse John Chyka until the day I die for us not also getting Sillinger at 11!🤬
Can you edit the titles of your videos to include the draft year? I clicked on this one and saw this year's draft as expected. Then I clicked on your Reviewing Round Two Of The NHL draft and it was the 2nd round of last year's draft...
Rangers were rumored to be high on Boucher. I think Ottawa figured they would have to stay at 10 if they wanted him. That being said, it is a question of whether Boucher is that good that you don’t want to lose him.
The wings definitely drafted for needs not the best player on the board. I'm fine with it. We have a boatload of prospects and only so many can be developed. It's hard to get what you need through trades so may as well draft what you need
Well thats funny, because to Steve Yzerman and the Dozen of scouts they hire, they said they drafted the best on the board. Surely John Sohn knows more than them?
@@jleif7736 No need to be a jerk. They picked the best players available to fit the needs of the team. That's all I'm saying and I am free to have my opinion.
He'll be seen as a "bad" pick by some if one of the other defensemen taken in the Top 10 ends up being a better player. The wildcard is whether the three brothers want to play together. If this brings Quinn to NJ in free agency and Luke ends up as a serviceable top-4 Dman, then NJ absolutely made the right pick.
@@FGHY8 they kicker for me is the #1 OA pick who is a Dman sets the tone that this draft has good top players that save teams fortunes but not elite players w/ Power at #1 most likely going to college and his floor 2nd pair 2way D - first pair 2 way D who scores but doesn't hit & should let Dahlin QB PP aka a #2 on the first pair. Grabbing Hughes who is a yr younger and right in the mix with these guys plus Jacks bro & could bring in Quinn I cant see being off when he can develop so much more than other players.
Can’t believe Cossa went before Walkstedt. Just crazy. And I’m fairly upset my Rangers drafted Othmann instead of Lucius, Svechkov, RATY or Bolduc who were still on the board. I don’t think Othmann was the BPA at that point. Far from it. I think they took Othmann with an eye on 2026 when they do not re-sign Panarin. Yup. They won’t be able to afford another Panarin contract at that point.
As a Wings fan, I was 50/50 between Eklund and Edvinsson but I slightly wanted Edvinsson more because I think strong defense and strong goaltending is arguably more important than offense. Two things you can not win without: Excellent defense and excellent goaltending. Sure your offense can score 3 goals a game but if your defense and goalie is allowing 4 goals your not winning the game. We also went for offense last year with Raymond, plus next year's draft is going to be stacked with forwards like Wright, Savioe, Lambert....etc and we could have a chance to draft one of them. Plus Detroit already has a lot of offensive power with Larkin, Vrana, Bertuzzi, Hirose, Erne, Zadina, Rasmussen, Smith, Fabbri, Veleno and hopefully Raymond and Berggren soon not to mention other promising late rounders like Soderblom and Grewe....etc. So that's another reason why I wanted a top rated defenseman with that 6th pick. Edvinsson is like 6 ft 4 and over 200 pounds, imagine him on a line with Seider. You got two huge defenseman you gotta get through and then you also gotta beat a 6 ft 6 goalie. Yzerman addressed Detroit's goalie situation with Cossa and bolster up the blue line with Edvinsson. I give Yzerman a solid B+, my only complaint is that he traded up and chose Cossa when Wallstedt was still available. I mean I guess it doesn't really matter. Most rankings had them equal, or Wallstedt as slightly better. But hey, I trust Stevie Y. Only time will tell. Let's not forget when he chose Seider at 6th in 2019 we were all like WTF. I was pissed at first lol 😆 and gave Yzerman a solid B- (which would have been a C- had it been Holland). But now that choice is paying off very well. Seider was recently named the SHL defenseman of the year and looks like the real deal
Shannon, I am newish here and am assuming you have been doing these draft review videos for a while. When looking back, which of these draft services/magazines/websites is most accurate with there rankings? Thank you.
I think it would definitely have to start with Smith and a pick, but to be honest, if they have to wait until he’s a UFA, that might fit their hypothetical contender window better, so I guess I’d prefer that
I heard about the difference between Cossa and Wallstedt was the pre-draft interviews Yzerman had with each. Cossa was a character guy with a better work ethic. Thats why they went that way with him. It is the same thing they did when he surprised the hockey world taking Seider and look how that turned out. I trust Yzerman. Lol.

Depth!? Its more of need than BA. Yzerman values character over 'talent' as work ethic does much better in the playoffs than that talent. Lol! I would love to see data on just how accurate these "scouting services" are. Has anyone ever gone back and looked at it? I think most of the teams' scouts have a better idea of what they need, and who fits in their organization, than do these outsiders.

I really liked the Penguins first rounder this year. Looks like he's gonna be a stud one day.
"Rankings are stupid....looking at a number what one person said."
Those rankings are the analysis of hundreds of scouts. They are not stupid and they are not just the view of one person.
"Great offensive talent"
Oh you mean Stutzle?
In net Gustavsson (maybe is improving now?)
Sogaard is trending up.
But at 1c, and line 1 type players in general we got Stutzle. Not enough to justify going off board and using 10 on a guy rated 28 to 50.

Flames got an absolute steal in Matthew Coronato. Happy to have him on our team.
Yeah he's a good one. And he'll continue to develop next year at Harvard. I'm about 75% sure he's gonna be a star.
@@APJTA The Flames need him desperately. I really really hope he doesn't spend his time in University hockey for a year or 2 then go off to sign with a different NHL team. I would be so disappointed.
@@christiantaillon2930 I believe it would have to be 4 years before he can leave for another team.
@@APJTA I hope he signs right away for like 6 years like Matthew Tkachuk. He started playing for us right after the draft.
Depending on how his year goes, Matthew might be able to sign his ELC at the end of his freshman year.
i really like how you have multiple rating services... would be interesting to look at 5 years back and all the ratings (if available)
We can make a nuance with Caufield
Craig button has proved he's not an expert. Certainly he would not agree with my opinion.
Flyers drafted a Finn for the first time in like 17 years.

Really show how bad Adams is
Why we already are invested in lukkonen
The Cossa vs Wallstedt debate is something I'm very excited to see how it will pan out. Minnesota is better at developing goaltenders too but Detroit must believe that Cossa is substantially better so we'll see. That being said, I don't necessarily think a player's potential matters, they really need to get developed in the right environment and culture. I think that has more of an effect than just "oh this player is more skilled at x or x than this player." Also lowkey hoping Quinn reunites with his brothers in NJD (sorry Shannon) but that would be fun. All these brothers on the same team must be so nice from their POV.
So the Gretzky brothers hold the record fore the most points combined as brothers in NHL
but maybe hughes brothers break that.???

As a die hard Kings fan, I will be paying more attention on Mctavish and Eklund. These two will might be problems that Kings have to deal with sooner than later.
Yeah and the ducks and sharks are going to have to deal with Byfield Turcotte and Kaliyev, now we have our future #1 D. Not too worried about the ducks or sharks rn lol
Just wait until we add Wright next year too add to Eklund
@@adrianfuentes9418 pretty realistic tbh
Its not a bad draft but an unpredictable draft since certain leagues didnt get to start up and scouting was limited to basically video only until the very end of the year.
As a Bruins fan I’m so happy about Lyssel
In the first round, I think Wallstedt, Eklund and Lysell are the biggest steals. In the entire draft, I think it's Räty. I still can't believe that so many teams wouldn't even gamble a 2nd round pick on him.
Will you be doing a review of each teams picks from the draft this year? I think it'd be a really cool series, shouldn't take too long either.
Interesting to see if Yzermans picks turns out well. Edvinsson vs Clarke and Cossa vs Wallgren.
Mean Wallstedt of course
I'm anxious to know what you think about Arizonas draft overall. And I'll curse John Chyka until the day I die for us not also getting Sillinger at 11!🤬

Ottawa's head of scouting stated they wouldn't have gotten Boucher if they traded back. He was going in the 10-20 range.
There was reported interest from the Flames and the Canucks... but that interest doesn't mean they would have definitely taken him.
No offense but Hughes skating alone will keep him from being a bust. He’s not the guy that’s gonna be thought of as the guy who went too

Brian Boitano was a great skater too.
I'm now gonna say "Microbes? I dunno" whenever I can't explain something
Minnesota and Columbus had the best draft's for me. As a Flames fan really happy with Coronato fits a need organizationally as a scorer and RW.
Allan is a defensive-defenseman which is style/role that is lacking on the team, so this might be more of drafting based on need rather than a BAP.
Shannon, I am newish here and am assuming you have been doing these draft review videos for a while. When looking back, which of these draft services/magazines/websites is most accurate with there rankings? Thank you.

Sorry Shannon. I root for Vancouver after the Devils since I’ve been watching you, but I really hope Quinn comes to NJ, and sooner rather than later.
what would the devils give up? ty smith, zacha, and a pick? or maybe dawson mercer?
of course, benning would probably trade him for PK.
I think it would definitely have to start with Smith and a pick, but to be honest, if they have to wait until he’s a UFA, that might fit their hypothetical contender window better, so I guess I’d prefer that
Through UFA as soon as possible. I have no interest in moving the assets it would take to trade for him
I heard about the difference between Cossa and Wallstedt was the pre-draft interviews Yzerman had with each. Cossa was a character guy with a better work ethic. Thats why they went that way with him. It is the same thing they did when he surprised the hockey world taking Seider and look how that turned out. I trust Yzerman. Lol.
I’m so glad Vegas got another potential good player can’t wait to see what we trade him for! As for my Rangers I’m fine with it!
