One of the main reason that music goes in 20 year cycles is because A&R scouts are normally in their early 20s. Without consciously meaning to, they sign the acts that remind them of what they grew up listening to.
Damn that’s airtight logic ngl lol
Great point
Makes sense
Must be why I dislike pop so much. I’ll stick to bandcamp instead of commercialized pop outfits picked by someone in their early 20s… no wonder it’s intolerable clone music
@@cassetteo I hated pop music the most when I was in my 20s, so I don't know what my excuse is lol. btw Intolerable Clone would be a great name for an indie pop label.
I don't think the Amen break ever really went away. It's always been ever present, in everything.
Amen
Just me or does this sound more like new Jack swing than garage amen? I kept expecting “Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped turned upside down”
No it went away for about 20 years. like the guy above said, 20 years old is when the are hired into the job, they like what they grew up with, influences everything. Ebb and flow of the world my friend. happens everywhere in all things
@@amfk8079 During which 20 year time frame did you not hear an Amen break in popular music?
I think the new wave of pop is going to be 90's trance.
Goals
It's already a lil bit the situation here, well a mix of 90s trance and early 2000s hip hop.
Been happening for well over a year already.
@@djLovelyTimeit definitely is moving that way
I’m ready someone please bring back daft punk and Basshunter
Almost definitely feel a 2000's resurgence on the way. More upbeat pop and sensibilities from the 2000's would be good to hear in new creations, there might be a lot of potential for some great music to come from it. Might be easier/more natural for some bands mostly outside pop to integrate pop too.
I Think the Music Styles from the 90's UK Club Scene is and has been poking through a lot of commercial tracks lately, it has a vast array of styles and was part of a Huge New Generation in music - Very important Era !
I think we are going to go back towards the early years of 'Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry' sounds. I think their is a lot of Garage stuff around at the moment in the UK. I think Dua Lipa/The Weekend will also have to look at changing their sound a bit for future albums so it's not all the same sounds over again.
Always top notch content, Austin! 🙌🏻
Nice video as always, Austin .
I noticed this, I told my friend about it like 2 weeks ago. Ian Kirkpatrick did something like this on Sorry to me by Julia Michaels too.
This video and comment section lead me down a rabbit hole lol. Where I ended up was that I was correct in 2019 feeling that Jon Bellion's sound going mainstream was inevitable haha. I have the weird feeling that his style influenced a lot of the fun funky bubblegum TikTok music, and now he's going to be in a very unique situation where listeners were molded by his initial style supply and now they will like everything he touches subconsciously without realizing why, which creates demand. Perfect scenario haha. I remember hearing the songs he did on the last Justin Bieber album, and hearing that Maroon 5 song "Lost" and being like "Yup that is 100% undeniably Jon Bellion, written and produced"
Exactly bro. That guy's musical genius is mind blowing
I’m not a fan of the Garage style, but Bellion being involved nearly puts me in the subconscious group you mentioned. Tori’s Shelter is the best song Bellion was involved with on her latest EP.
@@TheSteady I'm not a huge fan of the garage stuff either , I do like DnB but don't like it mixed with pop. I tend to pick up more on his productions that have similar soul to Glory Sound Prep and The Human Condition. It's hard to mistake the way he does vocal chops, the very saucy basses/drums, and the kind of meter he used when writing vocal melodies.
I hope Jon Bellion becomes the new "your favorite producer's favorite producer" like J Dilla was at one point.
Hahaha same here since 2016 dude, I was like NO WAY, this better not become known when THC dropped and then over time it did.
Glad I was one of the few to realize that as well.
Man, when he played HOLY back during the GSP Tour it was crazyyy in the VIP session, acoustic, still one of my favorite artists this far into the game.
Oh yeah definitely hearing this drum pattern a lot lately!
Love the video! The common thread in some of these songs is Jon Bellion. He co-wrote and produced Jung Kook's, Tori Kelly's, and Zayn's song.
Yep! JB is definitely a big proponent of this sound right now.
My girlfriend is a big kpop fan and she's been saying this for a while. The fact that they're about 20 years behind stylistically in a lot of ways has swung all the way around and is actually outpacing the trends I think we're seeing here in the west. 100% agree with your assessment.
Can you elaborate what you mean by theyre 20 years behind stylistically? I’m curious
@@odflmuzic954 Basically modern kpop takes a lot of a cues from groups that were popular in NA in the late 90s early 2000s. Has to do (supposedly) with the rapid growth of the pop space in the last few decades after the suppression of music and western culture by older generations. A lot of people now in management positions were influenced heavily by these western male and female pop groups and used them as templates for modern kpop. You'll notice it in everything from beats to fashion, to how 'trainees' 'debut' and the fan culture around these idol groups.
The end of the video was the best. Needed some tips on how to keep my pop tracks interesting without cramming more elements in
I'm so glad drum and bass is coming back!
This is garage music. old school UK rnb really. or 2step. so craig david and those types. but nice to see it getting a fair chance finally.
essentially yeah! Pretty positive Craig David was in the reference pool for Cut and Seven!
@@MakePopMusic1000% also zayn’s new song is an example as well and kyle actually has a song with craig with the 2 step as well.
Maaan great content as always! Keep it up
Thank you for the Video Brother u the best 👊🏽🔥
couldn't wait for the return of drum&bass... it's happening a little later than I expected but I love it
i did instantly think of this rise of dnb too but i think an interesting on that might catch some people out is brazil funk also one of my favourite genres for years now but im hearing it more and more
Perfect video as always! Thank you for your work, you make my skills level up every time! By the way, Austin, you look great!
Awesome video! Could you make a video on how to identify issues in a mix? Specifically vocals? This would be super helpful!
Use your ears
new trend for me is to use less quantization! to become much more feeling and nicer grooves with humanizing parts a bit.
Cubase has the best groove humanize swing quantisation. Highly recommend.
Flim- Aphex twin Totally is the inspiration ❤
9:50 love that melody, really reminds me of Architects' Doomsday the pre-chorus part
Yo it is the same melody hahahaha damm…. That’s pretty cool
I did not expect to read about Architects here. Pleasant surprise. Love them.
Hey Austin! What effect do you use to create the vinyl stop/start before the chorus?
Pretty funny. I'm an old guy, and I listened to these tracks in the order you had them on screen. When the Jung Kook track 'Seven' started I immediately thought to myself, oh, this is Craig David, down to the acoustic guitar and obviously the beat. Imagine my surprise when the chorus kicked in and it was basically his '7 Days' hah.
Cool video Austin ! I think you're right but even if you're not, it's a healthy good dispute to have. Would love to have your forcast on synth/non drums elements
Really dope!
ukg is back in mainstream not just in the uk
I want a UKG revival. I feel like the garage drums are so infectious
listen to pink pantheress
You are so talented!
another big thing is that there are rarely any bridges anymore. the closest thing to a bridge in a lot of songs today is a post chorus at the end of the last chorus.
very true!!!
astute observation
Great vid. The amen break for whatever reason triggered bell biv devoe - poison in my head. Even though it’s not. Appreciate the flashback :)
YES! The instant recognition of that song with that break is insane. I'm not mad if new jack swing wants to come back....
The song you made sounds so much like the girly pop music I grew up with, awesome work ❤
It's a really good beat, and, like you say, you can do a lot of different stuff over it. I like it paired with a solid lead synth riff like Super Shy. My one criticism is that the lead melody in this kind of style could use a bit more dynamism.
Might be Olivia Rodrigo leading the charge yet again with vampire (Meatloaf-esque) or bad idea right (gnarly guitar lead tones).
I'm so tired of listening to Olivia Rodrigo whine about how some man cheated on her. Her new song Vampire was more of the same to me.
Hey Austin...are you into using the same chord structure for verses and chorus at the moment?
You're 100% correct in that the trend is moving towards 2000s & UK Garage inspired pop. However I can feel this getting super super tired in the next 9-12 months. I think there's specific patterns and production elements that make this genre what it is and hearing it everywhere is gonna get super boring. I think there's gonna be a handful of artists and producers that really nail it and keep it fresh but I do think it's gonna get a little stale eventually. Just like the disco revival has. No doubt it'll circle back around eventually though! I think we'll see pop shift towards the late 2000s / early 2010s within the next year or two. Especially when we think about One Of The Boys by Katy Perry. It wouldn't surprise me if we hear pop/rock with synth based elements coming back.
Rushing to listen to that New Jeans to hear what this new sound of pop is... ah yes, 2 step, UK Garage!
Exactly lol I’m already getting tired of the UK Garage sound but that’s because I grew up with it and all the other edm and dance styles of the early 90s - 10s, trance, house, DnB, etc. Honestly I personally feel because of TikTok and the over consumption of trends, these trends will have a big short impact and then slowly fade out after a year, because if everyone is consuming the same beats, rhythms and choreography, people will just burn out quickly.
I’m just waiting for the era that will bring back that YMCMB production era back, Justice League, Mayback Music
I hope this is the future of pop. Break beats are so fun.
Not sure if you'll see this but I'm curious about your methodology. How are you determining which songs to analyze? I did some research on the billboard top 50 and most of it was country when I checked (granted I was only looking at the English language songs). I'd love to hear where you're listening to recent releases. Thanks!
“Seven” and “cut” were both produced/written by Jon Bellion 💙
Craig David is in the house. Yep, noticed it too.
Amen 🙏🏻
Apart from the common producer/songwriter I would think the upbeat BPMs are becoming popular because of the "sped up" TikTok music. It also explains why the productions are generally a bit brighter and chipmunkier.
We are in a Fake Smile Era Again 🙃
The song “Giving me” by Jazzy which is very popular in the UK now is also an example of higher bpm isn’t it? Calvin Harris seems already into it with latest releases “Desire” and “Miracle” as well
I also feel like Mumford and sons-esque folk pop is starting to come back too, with guys like Noah Kahan leading it, and Lizzy McAlpine also dabbling in it.
Oh I hope so
I've been releasing garage Instrumentals since 2018ish, wait till people backtrack my catalogue.
Which daw are you using ?
and we have a song by Max Fury called 'Stick It In' and the lyrics are crazy funny! Tbh i haven't liked a pop song in ages. I can enjoy the actual productions at times, but just that alone doesn't help when the music i feel is not really that good, but i'm super picky. I wished i could lower my standard's, but i can't. The drums you are demonstrating kinda reminds me of my new song. Am i doing what's hip finally?!
Add some dominant or diminish chord for a good vibe in this type song ✨
I wonder also if it has something to do with jungle/dnb having a moment. Can see a change with Nia Archives style music and random jubgle mixes getting millions of views on yt
Definitely
yeah I agree, the sounds of pop music now is really different from what I think of when I hear the pop, but I think it's great to see the music constantly evolving, but I still do miss a touch of the nostalgia from 2010s pop music
Im the opposit, i dislike 2010 music but love music from 1990 and recent musik. But it might be because i stoped to listen to popular music and instead found the style that i like.
anyone know which splice pack that Garage groove loop at 13:44 is from?
just checked for you! Looks like it's the RKU_NG_130_DRUM_LOOP_PERCUSSION_GARAGE_PERC_SET from ALEPH - NEON GROOVES
very catchy loop name lol
Thanks so much bro 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
It's called Garage mate, UK been writing this for 25 years. That's why all those songs you mentioned have UK writers.
Yeah, I mention it being UK Garage 😂
I think the new pop sound will be like Owl City at 1.1x Speed. Return of cheap digital synthesizer sounds. Over cuteness melodies and elements from the hyperpop trend paired with faster beats from the ongoing trance/dnb trend. But also a little note of dreamy emotions from bedroom/lo-fi pop, which is also very popular since the lookdown.
You're the only youtube music tutor that doesn't have a video on mixing vocals with two tracks
I don't mix vocals to 2 tracks. It's super uncommon in the pop world, especially since I produce most of the tracks I mix.
I think I’ve noticed more hyperpop elements in pop lately, with sounds processed to hell for a kinda glitchy aesthetic (I’m here for it tho)
You know you're right even the most recent Zayn record Love like this has a similar drum pattern and interestingly Jon Bellion also produced the record.
yeah Jon Bellion sound ! but no big top charter for now except for Seven !!! Let's see !
Can you do a pop song tutorial like bloodpop and stargate?
It’s the called - 2 step beat that Craig David made huge over 20 years ago. Check “Fill Me in” - Craig David. He brought it to the market first - year 2000 to be exact -23 yrs ago. Yes we going back to this beat.
“Just beat it! Beat it!”
im calling it too I feel like Y2K D&B is the next wave
I love 80's goth music.
UK Garage...DJ EZed...EZed...EZed...sorry about that. Fun era (spoken as dude from the United States who accidentally got into UK/2-step Garage pack in the early 2000s...memories, lol.
I have seen many pop producers have chosen Cubase for their main daw. The DAW doesn't really matter and you can do great music with any modern DAW, but just out of curiosity - do you see any advantages of Cubase?
Hello from Ableton User :)
I love the workflow of Cubase. The way they balance working with MIDI and live recording is so good. And the stock features they have are top tier. It's stable. I just never really found ANY reason to try anything else.
omg yes its almost like uk garage x house
Yeah it basically is ukg ..
I never know what my next song is going to be like, or what the groove will be, or whether I'll even use drums at all. It could be anything and I like it that way. I let the songs come as they may, and most of the time I'm surprised and delighted. Personally, I would never decide beforehand what style of song I'm going to write (unless it was a commission). Inspiration takes me to many different places and I'm amazed at what pops out. As a writer I'm interested in creating a great song, and that is my main focus. Thank you for the awesome video!
Very Very Good.
0:48 I see what you did there! (POP up) 😝
I love this idea for a video cause I think about this all the time with genre blending. I don't really consider the sound selection when determining if something is pop or not to me its more does this follow a verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus arrangement. PinkPantheress is the first one that I heard make it her style since like 2021. I'm also hearing it in the underground too.
Classic break....slow that down and you have 'Walk This Way' RUN DMC
I think he's right!
basically hip-hop from 80-90s
that pattern is just the powerpuff girls intro and im here for that🙏
electronic music will finally have its mainstream moment
Look out, America / Korea just discovered 2-Step and Garage from 20 years ago...
20 years is quick for us to catch up / cycle back. We JUST got done re-hashing the 80s a year ago 😂
I really wonder when oldschool hiphop becomes a thing again
great vid
Can you link that amen break video?
Added to the description!
Other things to add:
1) pop songs don’t have a bridge anymore
2) the jersey club kick rhythm has 2023 on a chokehold😂 At least a section would have that
As someone who spent a bit of time recently in the NY music industry, it's somewhat of a consensus among professionals and executives that, whether it'll be considered pop or not, JB’s new sound is going to be one of the next big things.
Edit: As a side note, if it doesn't merge with pop, I like the term neo-Americana, which I've heard used to describe the Jonas Brother’s latest album.
He pointed at Jack Antonoff and said "My turn!"
Interesting, JB being Justin Bieber ?
@@timrault Jon Bellion
Right thanks
Man that album sounds like everything else hahaha. Other than some dead drums and muted live bass guitar.
Edit: also, summer in the Hampton? Really?
SuperShy sounds exactly like Disclosure's Birthday VIP Mix
Sounds like UK Garage music!
N’Trance - set you free!! Fire
국뽕 장난아니네 캬... 너무 자연스럽게 정국, 뉴진스가 팝을 다루는 형 채널에 나오네...
Didn't know Enya was making a comeback already
My take is pop music will lean to live instrumentation. The hyper pop music trend is already over. What you hear now is already 1-1.5 years old
literally james ivy!
All the guys in the beginning have a little of "speed up Craig Davids vibe"
I was doing this 10yrs ago lol
Jon Bellion is involved with 2 out of the 4 songs, Jung Kook and Latto's record and the Tori Kelly record.
id love to know how to produce that "tape stop" effect
the plugin tape stop by kilohearts!
@@MakePopMusic My hero!
Trippy turtle anthem? Have a look to that song I’ve been for years waiting for theat sound to come trendy
When people say that different artists are creating, doing, using they should often instead say that when Max Martin is creating etc...
Max didn't work on any of the tracks I mentioned in this video
@@MakePopMusic That's possible. It was just a reflection I had. But he probably made the sound for most of the artist you mentioned any way. Example Blinding Lights.
This is just a kinda variation on UK Garage
Yeah I mention that
90 `s are on the way again, seems natural to me.
Will 80's rock music ever come back? 😅 in the styles of Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Scorpion?
Jon Bellion. My favourite artist.
This is the only beat I can play on the drums
You sure left out Hip Hop which started the Breakbeat Sampling.
As I stated in the video, the history of the amen break, and most other breaks, is very long and there is already an amazing video on TH-cam that goes over all of that.
Also, I 100% mentioned hip hop throughout this video as a reference and use for the drum break.
