Joe isn’t lying. Stevie Wonder composed a lot of his songs in the key of Eb also his zodiac sign Taurus no cap check his songs. You find chords that compliment your deepest core of your being. I’ll give Joe credit for at least being cognizant of these tips from one guitarist singer songwriter to another. Even John Mayer said if it doesn’t compliment my voice or inner core I scratch the song and move on

These are good ass tips, and with the last one for sure was something I learned with experience.
"Listen to your own voice. Chris Stapleton has no business singing Justin Bieber and vice versa" was what my vocal coach taught me, and I don't agree 100% but I get what she was saying.
I grew up listening to Alicia, Mariah, Adele, and other great female Singers. So when I started to sing I wanted to have the range and strength they did, and with alot of practice I actually learned to imitate them pretty well and learned alot of skills, but it still sounded fake.
So When I started singing in my own register and in my own voice I noticed the couple years of singing so high set me back in learning to sing where I should be. My vocal coach told me I should try singing deep blues or soul music instead of pop and r&b music when practicing
The quality and tone and color of my voice has gotten so much better. And I even found a love for true blues music. I can sing lower than I thought I could, and my vocal control is WAYYYYY BETTER.

the only thing anyone naturally has is the tone of their voice, staying on pitch, expanding vocal range and being able to do runs and have proper breath control and all that is something you have to learn no matter how good ur voice is, so while lucky isnt completely incorrect, he deserves more credit than that imo

Great video! Some wonderful points and really interesting to hear your process! Particularly vowel modification and dynamics are things often overlooked, but so important :) As a vocal coach myself, I wanted to point out that how much you open your mouth is very dependent on context, opening it more isn’t necessarily always wrong, but it’s great you’ve found something that works for you ☺️a big thank you also for your guitar tutorials, I’ve been slowly working my way through your frank ocean cover and just love your chord voicings!

Thank you mentioning the changes in volume. It usually goes unnoticed by people new to singing. And regarding pronunciation, I was taught to yes, round out the vowels and also to soften the r's and e's. They hit the ear too harshly when they're pronounced hard.

Insane how you packed in so much crucial advice into one video. I struggled with some of the stuff you talk about for so long. Particularly picking songs and changing keys. I would want to sound so good at a specific song and would get annoyed I wasn’t, when really my voice just wasn’t really well suited for that song. And for changing keys, I only realized this way to far in my journey. But eventually you realize even artists will play their songs 1 full step down from the recorded version sometimes if the powerful notes are at the top of their range. Knowing how to pick the right key and make a song my own has made me a “better” singer almost overnight, it’s amazing. Thanks for sharing!

3:21 okay but I actually love that twangy version of the line a ton, but I totally get what you’re saying

These were really good points! I actually find for some reason when i close my eyes my voice is a little better, not sure if this is just in my head though😅 Also, i find choosing a key that suits me is hard as womens vocals are always expected to be high. My comfortable range is lower than that so i sing in a 'mans range' but then that can go too low for me so its a struggle😬

Great video my man. You also have a great natural voice. Especially the part about changing the key of a song to fit your voice (and not the other way round), is particularly useful.
What I like to do is play the MELODY of a whole song on my guitar (in the artists original key). That allows me to identify the highest note their voice is reaching. I then transponse that highest note to my highest note and then I can sing the song more comfortably.

Thank you so much for these tips! For the longest time I've been frustrated because I thought I can't sing, apparently, I've been singing on the original keys of pop songs (most were sung by sopranos) - lately I've been discovering music from artists with the same voice keys/range as mine - still exploring though!
Hope to find my sweet spot pretty soon!
