      @@saintdonoghue I'm not a fisher so take it for what it is, but I remember receiving a fly rod as a kid and how much fun I had just practicing with it in the back yard, endangering only the lives of the roses on the rosebush. I never actually went fishing with it, though. I would imagine it's the joy of that particular kind of fishing that brings people to it. Fly rods are great fun. I guess better inflicting pain than death?

And for some reason, I’ve attached Richard Flanagan’s Gould’s Book of Fish as a complimentary book. They’re all purposefully nestled on the same shelf for some reason and I can’t remember why. Oh Steve, Steve do you really know that many readers who need your exhortation to not read an author because of their gender, colour or sexual orientation? It is not that I don't want to read any more books by white, middle class, straight American blokes. I still do read lots of them. I just don't want to find that I am reading more of them than any other flavour of writer and I want the publishing industry to make this easy for me, which they are increasingly doing. I am more sympathetic to your worry that some people want authors to all be good human beings when we know that lots of great artists are pretty awful people. In fact I suspect that happy, healthy, well balanced individuals rarely write good fiction. Your description of Highsmith as odious is a good example, but you are just the person to give me an exception, a truly great book by a jolly soul leading their ideal life. Not giving some grubby individuals your cash is a different question of course.
    Thank you for the reading from Catton. It lifted my spirits. And some of us over here in England have heard of Norfolk. John Saturnall's Feast was gloriously weird. I meant to go back and read some of his earlier books so thank you for the prompt.

      Seemingly contradicting a post I made to this very video (but not really) - I can identify practically a whole generation of readers in need of such an exhortation. Inclusivity is quickly become inverse and backhand exclusivity. I can't speak for him, but I suspect Steve could provide you a very long list of proper names from this cohort.

    Hi! It's been a while. I've had a love/hate relationship with you for the past couple of years. I love that you focus on books and since I'm not as voracious a reader as you are, I never heard of most of the books you show (that's the love part). Sometimes your comments annoy the heck out of me and I go away not liking you very much (that's the hate part). Either way, I think you're awesome (maybe too strong of a word) and even when I am not liking you very much I still think you're awesome (I need a new adjective). This video and your comment about the latest fad of picking books based on the authors' gender or sexual orientation. I agree with you wholeheartedly. I think that by choosing a book based on those two criteria, the reader is doing exactly the opposite of their intended purpose.
    Maybe there is still hope for you ;). I'm subscribing again, until the next time you annoy the heck out of me again. - - going back to watching your video. I posted this comment at the 9:21 mark.... We never know what may happen in the next 20 minutes.

  • @mdavidmullins
    @mdavidmullins 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Steve. Hope you had a good Christmas and New year.
    I didn't like Orson Scott Card's writing long before I knew anything about his politics. It always seemed sophomoric and badly written. I haven't read everything - not even close - so maybe I don't have the full picture. What is clear is that, yes, not liking an author based on the color of their skin or some other facet of their biology is bigoted. Judging an author based on that author's own bigoted views, views which they expressed publicly, is not in itself bigotry. Not even close. I'm not promoting cancel culture here, but calling out public figures for bigoted views is well within the boundaries of civilized behavior. Not wanting to put money in such a person's pocket by buying their books is just basic sanity.

    • @saintdonoghue
      @saintdonoghue  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your last sentence says it would be insane for somebody to buy a new book by Orson Scott Card - in other words, that if somebody agrees with his political views (or just doesn't care), they're insane. Needless to say, I disagree.

    • @mdavidmullins
      @mdavidmullins 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@saintdonoghue No. You misunderstand. I said that it would be insane for someone to put money into someone's pocket which *they* so vehemently disagree with. No judgments about what other people choose to read or who they choose to support. Maybe I was unclear.

    • @saintdonoghue
      @saintdonoghue  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mdavidmullins OK, yes, I misunderstood - but is the clarification much better? That you disagree with somebody's politics so much you'll refuse to buy their books, even if you actually like their books (not the case for you and Card, true, but what about just in general), and even if the books don't contain the politics?

    • @mdavidmullins
      @mdavidmullins 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@saintdonoghue I would love to find writer's whose prose I admired so much that I read them despite strongly disagreeing with their worldview. I like nothing more than having my breath taken away by a writer. I would absolutely read such a writer. I can't think of anyone like that though. I wonder if a writer's beliefs aren't part of what causes their writing to work for us. I can't think of anyone strongly conservative who has ever rung my bell literarily.

    • @mdavidmullins
      @mdavidmullins 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, although Ayn Rand is at least equally sophomoric in her writing, I find her ability to create a sense of place very effective. I have to grudgingly admit that she had talent. I do however think that if she had not had the experiences in childhood that so warped her, she would have been a much better writer.

      I know, I know! And the objection you allude to here - actually giving money to an author you personally dislike - is one I've heard before and largely agree with. Yes, if you dislike an author it's perfectly OK to refuse to buy their new releases, refuse to funnel money directly into their bank account. In this video, I was mainly thinking non-transactionally, mainly thinking about the people who refused to READ an author whose tweets they dislike, regardless of how much they like that author's prose.
