I laughed most at the 'dont you think it's funny??' being met with the deadpan 'No. Neither would the fuhrer'.
A really great thing about this film is how Lubitsch comments that reality is even more absurd than make-believe, as it certainly was in 1942. The main actor plays a Nazi comically, but when he meets the real nazi he's impersonating, the guy is far more ridiculous/expressive/comedic. We're kinda in a similar situation today. No Trump impersonator is ever as funny, real, raw and ridiculous as Trump himself.

It’s rare to praise the remake.
That said, I love this original and Mel Brooks version.
Mel Brooks did the remake well since he put in his heart and professionalism to it and still honor the original.

So why did Mel Brooks remake this movie? I absolutely love Mel’s version but with how good the original was, it kinda seems unnecessary.

Mel Brooks was only cast as an actor in "To be or not to be". He did not direct or write it.

@@ricarleite he didn’t? Mel Brooks version appeared in his big collection of movies. And he was famous for casting himself in almost every movie he was in. Including the main role in Silent Movie.

@@Kaempfdog Look for it. He was only cast as an actor.

The remake is my favourite Mel Brooks film.
I want to see this one, even though it won’t be near as funny. It’s understated as opposed to Mel’s zany style.
