Kaz Brekker is absolutely a master thief haha. He's the one who stole the painting we see in this episode, to give you a grasp of his talents. Inej, the girl who works for him, is just incredibly skilled at sneaking in and out of places, and spying on people. So she gets him the necessary information Kaz needs to do jobs, but doesn't necessarily carry them out herself, unless specifically asked. Hope that clears a bit of the dynamic up!

I suggest not looking up any info on the characters, especially the crows (kaz, inej and jesper) because whatever comes up will definitely spoil their backstories for you. Inej's is explored a bit during this season but kaz's and jesper's have been most likely saved for later seasons although there are hints in this one.
@8:33 the setting is supposed to be reminiscent to 1800s Russia/Europe. Also East Ravka, where Alina and Mal are from, is inspired by Russia. Ketterdam, where Kaz, Inej, and Jesper (The Crows), is inspired by Amsterdam, Antwerp, Las Vegas, London, and old New York.

Re your question about the books:
There are total eight Grishaverse books currently published:
- shadow and bone trilogy (Alina, mal, prince caspian etc)
- six of crows duology (Brekker and his gang - the show takes place before the timeline of their books and has created a prequel for them in the SAB timeline. It was great viewing for book fans as we were entirely fresh to it)
- king of scars (2 of ? books currently out) focuses on Zoya (the wind girl who tried to seduce Mal in this episode) and a new fan-favourite character that gets introduced in book 2 of SAB).
That only adds up to 7?

Grishaverse trilogy (Alina's story):

-5. Crooked Kingdom
IDK if in spanish the books kept his name "Mal", here in Brazil they changed to Maly so we wouldn't think he's evil because of the name

It's honestly one of the best book-to-screen adaptations I have ever seen. There's obviously changes, and there are characters from other books in the series, but the story with Alina is very, very close to the books

I recommend watching the "building the world shadow and bone" trailer video on the Netflix yt channel. its only 5 minutes and it explains the countries on the map and the different Grisha orders (etherealki, materialki, and corporalki)

The Shadow and Bone trilogy is written for a slightly younger audience. Like a Harry Potter feeling.
Six of Crows books are a little more mature, with an Oceans 11/Game of Thrones vibe.
Important caveat: the Alina and Crows timelines don't intersect in the books, but Six of Crows is so popular that they wanted to weave the storylines together. The Crows TV material is all made up for the show in season 1. They will show actual Crows book storyline for future seasons.

Regarding the books: There is the Shadow and Bone trilogy - Alina/Mal story. Then there is the Six of Crows duology - Kaz/Inej/Jesper story. The SoC characters and the SaB characters do not interact in the books. I feel a little bad for those who are picking up SoB for the first time might mistakenly think it is just like the series with all the same characters.
That's really interesting! It'll be fun to see if and how they integrate them

Definitely keep doing it for the channel! I watched the whole show in a day then read the first book of the trilogy and was disappointed (in the book, not the show). It's since been recommended to me to read the first book in the duology, so I'm gonna try that.
