  • I found an amazing wild medicinal mushroom at the cabin! The hemlock varnish shelf or North American reishi mushroom, Ganoderma tsugae. It has purported immune system boosting and anti-tumor properties among other health benefits. It has been called the mushroom of immortality. I show you how to identify it and where to find it. I also make a delicious wild medicinal tea using pressure extraction.

    You just made me realize something so funny my parents experienced when I was in the 6th grade that I haven’t thought about since then but they must have thought I was such a crazy kid. Our class had a fungus identification day on a Monday. We were encouraged to get out and look for fungus of any type the day before, to collect it safely and bring it in to class. Well there was this huge bracket fungi that grew on a tree for years at our house and I told my dad I wanted to take the whole thing. It was huge. He cut the bark of the tree loose with a saw and piled the whole thing in a box. My mother was shocked when she saw what I was taking to school. The thing smelled too, like an acid smell. It was a deep red color. No idea what it was but I def had the best fungus. I don’t know how my parents tolerated me 😂😂😂

      I encouraged nerdiness in my kids as I am a nerd too ,my kids were banned from taking a tarantula to school and I was banned from venomous snakes when I was a kid. I imagine your teachers were very impressed.

    Wild mushrooms have always fascinated me, but also scare the bejebbies out of me. I'll stick to photography of wild mushrooms and just consume commercially sold mushrooms. Thanks for sharing your brave, brave (for me) foraging adventures with us.

    2024 june 2 and the reishi season is on in northern NY. I've checked most of my easy spots and seeing good flushes. My first every spot is still giving after 7 years! I even picked a few several days ago. I've been using reishi dual extract that I make and can't believe how powerfull it is. I used to use a medication for sinus headaches 3 or 4 times a month and haven't needed it in months. I sleep like a baby and I'm regrowing hair on my bald head.

    Bless your heart girl ! Put the sugar in before it is chilled . 1/4 cup sugar to 1 qt of tea and you have "sweet tea" . I'm in Ga and am praying for rain so I can find some shroons. The Reishi here tend to be 20 ft. up trees , I think I should cultivate them.

      I was too. I began with the most easiest to identify. Chaga , artist conks etc. This is one such. Grows primarily on one tree , hemlock. I know other types grow on other trees but tsugae is almost always on hemlock and is very easy to identify. Closest look alike is also medicinal. The red-belted polypore.

    I pulled the biggest and most I've ever run across during 45 years in Texas, off of a dying Hackberry tree which seemed unusual. I've pulled four 5 gallon buckets off the thing. It fruited like a frenzy for 3 years. I pulled one off of the last fruit that is 2 feet across!

    You can find those everywhere in the higher elevations of my area. They can be very beautiful. Yes we drink sweet tea in Tennessee. It's sweetened iced tea. I brew my tea on the stove top, then add sugar, usually a cup and a half for a whole pitcher full, then add it to the pitcher full of ice. Delicious.

    Great video I love the bitterness rieshi has …. Makes me more relaxed along with bitterness creates better health with the immune system fighting off free radicals .Puts me right to sleep for the night that’s when your natural immune response is at its lowest while in deep R.E.M. Sleep. ✌🏻

    We have golden reishi here in the deep southern us. We find them regularly around the property. I have made tea a few times, but it was so dang bitter, I couldn’t keep drinking it regularly. I probably could dilute it a bit. Great video, thanks!

      Very cool. Yes, even though I made it quite dilute there was still a bit of bitterness. I would have to take the powder of reishi mushrooms in a gel cap if I had to have more of it!

    I just make capsules with a combo powder of 10 different species including Reishi and I take 6 to 8 capsules per day.

    If you are using it for medicinal reasons for the tumors especially it is recommended to use it without sugar at all, maybe dry it & ground it in a cofee/spice grinder put it into capsules available online or in some vitamin stores. I use vegan caps. but you might also just tough it out & drink it in a simmered way like you did which is very good. Think it comes out more when simmered , even longer too. did you look up house Chinese medicine practitioner prepare it for the patient? I think this might be advisable. thank you for showing us this & especially that book. Would think it is a good book to get looking online or even put it up on your info area where available.

    2022 has been a good year for reishi in northern NY. Not the best year ever but better than last. People shouldn't fear the reishi. It is the easiest to identify. No dangerous look-alikes. And relatively easy to find ( in it's season and habitat). Be warned everyone , you don't want to simmer this mushroom in your house. It reeks! I use it in a tincture and do the hot water extraction out doors. Granted it smells worse when simmering the alcohol soaked slices but is pretty strong without. I'm on track to harvesting 100 pounds this year alone. Dry weight.

      @@TheWildYam that's what I think too. Last year we had a dry , cool spring. No reishi. At all. Year before hot and wet, I gave up after the second flush. I have photos of a cluster I harvested twice. I think I still have it actually.

      You can but not really necesary. They are spongy.

      I've heard that to. That's how I do it. I'm drying 20 -30 pounds at a time though , lol.

      @@timothylongmore7325 I just put mine out in single layer on a canvas or fold up table for the day in a good sunny spot. Took 2 days roughly and definitely brought in at night. Also cut first, I made that mistake. Good luck.

      @@Weedeater58 Yeah , I sort them out and slice up the gnarly ones. I've used my bandsaw to slice an order one year. Saved the reishi "saw dust" for myself.

      @@Weedeater58 Actually add the dust to mason jars of sliced in alcohol. May try to make concentrates and powder them for capsules though. I'm unsure of the eficacy of raw reishi powder. Hot water extract HWE seems to be the preferred method
