To me this is the mark of a quality channel. My musical tastes are overall very different from Melinda´s, she is a vinyl collector while I continue to be a CD collector, and yet I watch every video that goes up. The joy of collecting transcends formats and musical preferences, and the thrill of getting new quality releases is common to us all. The new additions from Impex Records and Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs look spectacular!

Melinda, thank you so much for your wonderful review of the 1Step release of SING AND DANCE WITH FRANK SINATRA on Impex Records. On behalf of each of us involved with its production, we do appreciate it and happy that you love it.
In case anyone is wondering, the regular 33 1/3 & 1Step 45 sets utilize the exact same mastering we (Andreas Meyer, Chuck Granata, and I) recorded to our finished 30ips 1/2" analog tape master in New York at Swan Studios (which included transfer work that we first did with Matt Cavaluzzo at Battery Studios in New York). That was then given over to Chris Bellman, Bob Donnelly, and Abey Fonn in California, where they did a tube cutting from it at Bernie Grundman Mastering, with a small bit of both low and top end adjustment to compensate for how its sound translated with the beautiful character of the vacuum tube cutting system utilized, for both the 33 1/3 and 45 versions. They did an incredible job cutting it which included dealing with the brass that was sometimes difficult to cut without compromising the sound, and they accomplished it wonderfully. Both versions were done to be the best they possibly could. The difference, therefore, you're hearing on these releases is purely due to format - the higher speed, the 1Step process, and the vinyl formulation. It's just a superior format and lets you hear something more like real music and less comparatively like a recording.
-Martin Melucci (Associate Producer on the Impex releases of SING AND DANCE WITH FRANK SINATRA)

Thanks for shining a spotlight on Friday Night In San Francisco, the Sinatra Columbia vinyl and the Santana Abraxas vinyl. I especially was intrigued by the Sinatra LP. My Dad turned me on to the music of his youth which included the pop idol era of Sinatra’s career with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Sinatra virtually invented modern song phrasing for both the pop and jazz idioms. His Columbia work showcased the purity of that voice and what an instrument it was. On to Santana. Carlos Santana is one of my favorite guitarists. He conveys pop, jazz and spiritual elements through his music which make it extra special. Love the on camera look of your music room. The background nicely compliments your presentation. Thanks for the continued excellent content.

    Hi Melinda,
A piece of advice to get the best out of your Sinatra mono record (and other mono records): You should consider getting a mono cartridge and use for these - among other things it adds better depth to the sound stage.
Also if you collect first/original (jazz)releases from the 50's until the mid/late 60's, you'll often find that they sound best in mono via a mono cartridge (as is also the case w. the Beatles in Mono, Stones ', Dylan's ditto an others).
Another advantage when you buy used records is that a mono cartridge is more tolerant to wear/noise and other damages to the record (within certain limits of course).
My choice has been the Audio Technica AT33 MONO, which I can really recommend. I have mine on a separate turntable so it's easier to swop from stereo to mono and vice versa.
Regarding Abraxas, David Bianco made a comparison between the one you have and the one-step. David finds that the new 33 rpm is very, very close to the one-step which in not on super vinyl (and breaks the listening up in 4 parts which I dislike and find is a technic-before-music choice when we are at the high quality level for both).
    Best regards Claus

Couldn’t agree more as to employing a decent mono cartridge on records from mono recordings, true mono mixes rather than stereo fold-downs, and cut by mono cutter heads. Miyajima is my go-to company for great true mono cartridges.

I always think of MJ when I hear the name Quincy Jones but reading up on him he has done so many things. Two that stood out for me was that he was in the band playing trumpet for Elvis on his first TV appearances and he conduced the last performance of Miles Davis before he died. Not just first LP,but very first music album I had bought in ANY form at that point! I was 14 in march 1984 when I bought it, went back to the car while my mom still shopped! I remember taking the shrink off and was blown away by the whole presentation! I couldn't wait to get it home and put it on the family hi-fi, and it didn't disappoint! QJ was part of that work that gave me that great childhood adolescent experience! R.I.P. Quincy Jones!😢

Quincy Jones has so many highlights (beyond Thriller) that I can't get into them all here. But I could say off the cuff that The Dude, The Quintessence, Birth of a Band, You've Got It Bad Girl, Back on the Block (CD only, far as I know), The Pawnbroker (a soundtrack), and Walking in Space are all a good starting point, as is the George Benson album Give Me The Night (which has the sublime engineering of Bruce Swedien). It is interesting to hear the evolution of his career as a trumpet player and bandleader to an arranger, producer, film composer, and many other things he touched in the entertainment world.

Reading up on musicians' backgrounds is fun, adds to the experience and sometimes brings more music. For example, Mike Oldfield was a member of his sister Sally's band. Until he made Tubular Bells happen and the roles reversed. It pushed Sally Oldfield to the background, but not entirely: she too went on and came up with the album "Water Bearer." Curious, I bought it and it too is a masterpiece. But less well known. Highly recommended.

The Frank Sinatra Impex release looks great. I don't own any Impex releases yet, but if something catches my eye, I will certainly buy one. Frank Sinatra was one of the truly towering artists of 20th Century music. Did you know that Jim Morrison of The Doors loved Frank Sinatra? That says a lot about Jim. 👍👍👍 Sing and Dance with Frank Sinatra is one of his better albums, but there are some far better albums that were released by him between 1955 and 1958. It's arguably the best time of his musical career when his voice deepened and became very rich and smooth. If Impex would put out Sinatra albums like In The Wee Small Hours, Songs for Swingin' Lovers, A Swingin' Affair, Where Are You, Come Fly With Me, and Only the Lonely, I'd very seriously consider buying them. 😻 Regardless, it's really good to see that they're giving Sinatra a lot of love with this release. He definitely deserves it. 👏👏👏

From Music Direct’s website regarding Mobile Fidelity’s Abraxas: “But just like 1969's equally essential Santana, Abraxas lays claim to one of the biggest (and unfortunate) production gaffes in music history. Until now, Abraxas has never been heard correctly. After securing the original analog master tapes, Mobile Fidelity engineers realized a colossal mistake had been made. For nearly four decades, copies were produced with the left and right channels reversed, meaning that everything was placed in a backwards manner. This even extended to compilations on which individual songs from Abraxas were included.”

That Abraxas is awaiting a repress on Music Direct and MOFI. So it’s not available… Usually they send promos out to people when there’s product to buy, to help promote sales. After watching your video, I wanted to buy it. Now, maybe I’ll just be happy with the Kevin Grey remaster anniversary release, which also has a digital step. Have you heard that one? Lots of people like that one as well. When it was released, Bob Bradley told everyone from his TH-cam channel that it was a AAA release. Columbia/SONY told Kevin he couldn’t talk about it. That only happens when there’s a digital step in the mix. Lots of games in the vinyl world…. I’m just a bottom feeder, trying to buy good sounding albums.

I've never been into the really super high quality releases, mostly because of funding, but I might give them a try if one of the companies - Impex, MoFi, etc - ever came out with albums from Carpenters or Manhattan Transfer...I can imagine how incredible those would sound, but it seems like they never do artists that I would really engage and actually not feel terrible dropping beaucoups bux on...although I have to admit that Getz/Gilberto is tempting - I only recently got the CD of that marvelous album and even higher quality is very very tempting...have a great week!

Many thanks for sharing your excitement for the Frank Sinatra 1step. Here in Europe that set costs abt. 250 USD, sometimes plus shipping. I seriously doubt that it is worth it and by probably feeding too many greedy mouths. Same thing with the Getz Gilberto whereas the AP 45 has the better value for money. Impex may have a hard time in Europe selling these ultra expensive editions, esp. in the current vinyl market situation.

Yes, I heard about Quincy Jones yesterday. He was a really good producer. While I can't stand Michael Jackson's music, the Thriller LP in particular is stellar in sound quality, really well done (No, I don't have it and won't, but I have heard it elsewhere).
I have never heard an Impex, MoFi, Acoustic Sounds, RTI, etc. record. So I have no real world listening experience with them and likely never will, I only know the process they use and what others have told me of their listening experience. By consensus it seems that RTI and Impex get consistently high marks. Acoustic Sounds seems a mixed bag and MoFi is hard to know. With MoFi, they got high marks until the scandal and then everyone changed their minds. I can tell when digital files were used to cut a record and it is pretty bad, but again, I have not heard a MoFi record so I can't speak directly to them. I have heard a couple of "standard" records that were cut with digital files, U2's Joshua Tree was one and it was bad. I went through 4 copies and every one of them stunk. It's a good album, so I got it on CD, which sounds far better. The opposite can also be true, for example standard Jethro Tull CDs sound awful (thin, tinny, etc). JT is far better on vinyl. (I suspect they did not transfer to CD correctly). I have recorded my own CDs of The Moody Blues LPs, JT LPs and they sound quite good, but I go through a process and not just hitting "record" on a computer CD burner and calling it done. (I actually use a professional redbook CD recorder and put the recording through a software program such as Audacity and now Sound Forge Audio Lab, which is purpose built for this. I played a Moody Blues LP I recorded to CD the other day and was surprised how good it sounded actually (still needs a very slight tweak in the mix, but other than that). I'm still learning the new program.
You are very fortunate to be able to receive such records gratis from time to time. That would be the only way I will ever hear one as I can't afford or justify the cost of them on the secondary or first market. However, receiving such records will never happen for me, YT channel or not because my channel is faceless and such faceless channels do not get such things or monetized or anything (faceless channels are poor marketing platforms for businesses, they are not interested. The best I could do is affiliate links, which get no traffic either anyway. I already have two non-music related companies who want me to contact them when I launch my channel). I do not want to nor can I monetize anyway, so no loss or sadness there. In fact, I have stopped working on my channel as of the second week of October due to the mess of the "election". Depending on what happens, there may not be TH-cam come January, so why waste time and energy (it takes a lot to create content, even crappy content like mine) for nothing? So I put it all on hold depending on outcome and I will either be throwing out the equipment I bought or not. (I would not mind NOT creating content at this point to be frank, but I'm a committed type person, so if we still have YT, I'll continue)

    • @MelindaMurphy

The Abbey Road original album is one of the best sounding and all of the Elton John one's!

Might want to be careful showing that Santana cover art. When Abigail Devoe did a video on it recently, she covered part of the cover while showing it on camera, because she said she didn't want to get "smited" by the TH-cam "gods". ;-)

That's interesting. I haven't had anything happen yet. We'll see what happens. Thank you for the warning. Take care. ♥️🤗

I may be a weirdo but I enjoyed my early teenage years. I am not a fan of single albums on two 45RPM records.

The early middle school years were brutal for me and yet I am very fond of the music from that time. I love 80's music up until 1985. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

Hey Melinda, Awesome video !!!! Friday night in San Francisco is a killer album. 😊 I have a question. Excuse my ignorance, I'm a cd guy. When you play a mono album, do you get a mono signal to both speakers or.....just one speaker producing sound ????? I don't have any mono recordings. Have a great week my dear !!!

I hear mono records out of both speakers. It's a very different listening experience than stereo but I can't imagine this record sounding any better than this. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
