0:56 I went to Spadina House for a tour, and the tour guide said that the original pronunciation is actually Spa-DEE-na. They don't know how it morphed into Spa-DYE-na as it is pronounced nowadays.
It’s not even a weird “Toronto” only word/pronunciation. It’s an actual word that shows up in any British or American dictionary and is pronounced as key in them.
It's a well known area. Trendy. And adjacent to High Park. I'm so baffled that people don't know it... it even has a nickname: Roncy. I'm floored by this... 😳🤷🏼♀️
A lot of west end people and east end people don’t go downtown like that unless they have to work downtown or they have business to attend to downtown. I haven’t been in downtown Toronto for like 3 years. I think I’ve been to Vaughan more to be honest.
In his book "We the North", Doug Smith wrote about how some Raptors live in a building that is connected to Scotiabank Arena by an enclosed walking path, so they don't have to go outside during the cold winters. I wonder if many of the players live like this. It pops this bubble that we have that professional athletes are really connected to their cities, when Pascal doesn't know how to pronounce Spadina after being here for 5 seasons. When Kawhi was on Serge Ibaka's cooking show, they planned on going to Caribbana, but I think that it was just for show. I don't think that Kawhi actually went. To the Raptors: Seriously. Get out of the downtown core from time to time, and explore our city. It's a really big place with lots of interesting neighborhoods. Enjoy it while you're here. You'll miss this place when you go to another city.
Great comment. A lot of athletes from all the leagues don’t really get out and about in Toronto as they do in LA or New York. It’s very sad. There’s so much Toronto has to offer but they don’t seem to care.
@@solitairedoll I hate to say this but most athletes are dumb and uncultured. Amazing at their sport, but personality and exploring is just not known to them. They’ve worked their entire lives playing sports.
@@ethantremblay3274 Sadly, you're 100% right. Most of them were driven to be pro athletes from an early age, and they don't bother with growing up and learning as a normal human being. They don't have any incentive to be smart, because they are focused on their sport and polishing their image for endorsements. A minority of them are well informed, but many sportsmen are just dumb jocks.
You may be on to something. Also gotta remember the nba season is mostly in the winter so I doubt these guys ever leave their condo/home to go explore the city
Dr. William Baldwin built a family home on the then two-hundred-acre property in 1818. He called it Spadina (pronounced spadeena), after the native term espadinong, meaning “hill.”
I'm in Toronto and I still have no idea how to pronounce Quay. OH BTW YOU'RE WRONG ABOUT SPADINA IT IS "SPA-Dee-NA" after the person it was named after - we don't pronounce it that way on the regular lol but that was the intention. We just got used to saying it incorrectly.
Actually the way they were pronouncing Roncesvalles was nearer the mark since Torontonians have said it wrong like forever because English was the language used. It is after all Spanish
fun fact, Strachan, Spadina are actually pronounced wrong by most Torontonians. i.e. how Siakam said "Spadina" is actually the correct (original) way and Strachan, a scottish name has a hard "k" sound on the "ch".
Banton is a real west end yute....he doesn't even know the DT roads 🤣🤣

bruh, most of the Raptor players live in South Etobicoke in those huge condos. So it makes sense they all know Etobicoke. Represent.
they moved em all to Marine Parade after the championship parade haha

Dalano only knows streets west of the humber river, the 45 bus doesn't go east
Dragic pronounces it like the true Slav he is :D
Banton is a real west end man. They don’t know DT roads 😂
Siakam played in Toronto his whole career and he struggled with all the street names while GTJ cruised through it.
GTJ has been around Toronto before as a kid, don't forget his dad used to play for the Raptors
The fact that Delono got Queen's Quay wrong kills me
He's trolling for sure
It’s not even a weird “Toronto” only word/pronunciation. It’s an actual word that shows up in any British or American dictionary and is pronounced as key in them.
Funny how they all got Etobicoke at the end 🤣
Chris Boucher at 1:50 like "wtf?"
Pascal has been here long enough he should know this. Dalano? Damn Bro. You this is your town!
Ion think it’s that deep bro lmao
Pascal definitely never leaves his condo
Come on, Dalano only takes the 45 TTC bus from Rexdale
Honestly. Living in one part of the city all you life has an affect on what you know. Toronto is big
when you’re life doesn’t revolve downtown, these names are barely known/hard to say.
