In the game against the Pacers he fractured his cheek and had a concussion. But the night before that game he spent in the hospital in traction for his back. You should react to the 5 times Larry Bird was injured but refused to quit and the 4 times Larry Bird was hurt but showed toughness. The injuries are mind blowing.

You hit his work ethic on the nose. He would regularly stay after practice and take 100 extra shots. A janitor at Boston Garden found Larry in the gym one day just dribbling the ball around to different areas of the floor when he went in to clean. He asked Larry what he was doing, Larry explained that he was listening for dead spots in the floor so he could avoid them yet maneuver his opponents to. He was usually 10 points ahead of you before he even took the floor.
Larry had the rare ability to make his teammates better too. He was the only major addition to their roster that year yet they won 32 more games in his rookie year than they had the season before. Jordan had his time in the NBA but his Bulls were swept the first three times they met the Celtics in the playoffs. Michael didn't get his team to the top until Larry retired

But I think it's misinformation that today's players are more skillful. Compared to whom? As Reggie Miller asked when he had to pick his starting all-time player at the 3, "Whose rules are we playing?"
It's much easier to score today because of ill thought-out changes that made it too easy to score. Adam Silver overreached on some of those rules, as did his predecessor. Bring back hand checking and focus on the mid-range game, get rid of the silly 3 second rule under the rim, and call travels, carries, and moving screens. For starters. And get rid of Silver. Please. 😀

One of the greatest things that has happened to me sports wise was being able to see the league in the 80s live as it it was unfolding and all the decades up to this point in the same way. Actually living to see 40 plus years of all the players that have come through the league and let me say, to say that 80s basketball wasn’t as skilled or as good as the league is right now is horribly inaccurate. The three point line has totally evolved to the point that it’s ruined the game. It’s also made the players much less skilled than decades before. All the players do is wait for ball rotation around the perimeter so they can jack up a three with ZERO teammates under the hoop because all 5 are around the perimeter. They can’t play mid range, take fallaways, run give and goes, play down on the block, drive to the hole effectively to control a game from the free throw line, pass out of a double team, etc. Guys like Bird and Magic could take just 12 shots a game have 26 - 30 plus points 10 rebounds and 9 or 10 assists a game and be the best player on the floor BY FAR. There are no players that do that today consistently. As for Jordan obviously great never beat bird in the playoffs and wasn’t as good all around as bird was. People were attracted to the dunks and high flying but Bird was and is the best all around player and it’s wasn’t that close. The 90s were good but then you start seeing the downside of the three point shot starting to take over and evolving in to what we have today. Huge reason why the tv ratings are down 48%. I still watch because I love hoop but nobody I know is interested anymore and could care less to
    Watch a game.

You can't base era against era without a curve. Introduction of the 3 opened up longer shots, nobody had practiced perimeter shooting beforehand because there was no reason for it. The major curves to consider are pioneering, rules, health/injury treatment, they wore Chuck Taylors. Bird was probably the father of step backs or at least one of the best back then. They did a lot of the learning for today's players. Guys today got a huge headstart. They got to watch and learn from the older guys which let's them focus more on new tactics because the old stuff was already downloaded into them.

God put the highest basketball IQ ever into a 6’10” white hick from French Lick, IN and then added the highest level of motivation, unparalleled work ethic, unmatched competitiveness, unequalled team leadership. and an inhuman threshold for pain. Nobody could stop him. If you left him alone he would score. If you double him he will destroy you with a perfect pass. If you foul him he will make the free throws. He will out-rebound you. He will make the big play. He will make the game winning shot. He will make his teammates better - MUCH better. He will do it every day, every game, every play. He will defeat every other great player in his era: Dr J, Bernard King, Dominique Wilkins, Sydney Moncrief, Isaiah Thomas, Moses Malone, Hakeem the dream and of course James Worthy, Kareem Abdul Jabar and Magic Johnson. This description applies to one player and one player only - Larry Bird 🐐

Who's the Goat 🐐 of Basketball 🏀??? Here are 8 great videos that make suggestions to who is the greatest. Of course everyone is going to have their opinion/favorite. So that you don't have to track them down.
All 8 of these videos are great and about 4 years old. *Lebron* has the most views and *Larry* is 2nd out of the list👇.
I personally enjoyed Larry's the most. Not only is he in the conversation of who's the goat 🐐. He won Gold 🥇 *(with his NBA Rivals like Magic and MJ)* at the Olympics, became a Head Coach (Indiana Pacers), then went upstairs to the Head Office.... running everything!! Larry's *GENUINE friendship* with Magic Johnson was awesome to see 👀, on and off the court. Oh yeah, Larry also had *Rookie of the Year* as well 😎

A lot of the changes in the game happened because long ago the fans kept telling the NBA that they wanted to see more scoring. They didn't like defensive battles. The best way to do that was to restrict the defense, so that's what they've been doing.

Larry would average 40 in todays league...
Everything about his game would fit flawlessly in tofay but on top you couldnt even go near him without getting a foul.
He would have free range from that invincible shot.
He averaged 29.9 his best season, you could *_easily_* add another 8-10 points to that if youre not allowed to touch him.

The game that Bird fell in and fractured the cheek bone, was also during the time he was fighting major back pain. He had spent the night in traction before that game. He came back in because he heard his team was losing. One article later stated that he had been told to not go back into the game, but he thought that maybe it would be the last game, so he decided that he might as well play. When he went back in the crowd gave him a multi minute standing ovation and he led his team to a win.
Detroit beat up on the Celtics too. Especially Laimbeer. He played dirty and tried to injure people. Bird hates him.

With his ability to effect the game in every aspect, be it points, assists, rebounds, steals, defense & the kinds you can't measure such as psychological warfare & causing momentum shifts, Bird in his prime would be a SERIOUS problem today. Great reaction G. 🤘

The speed of the video, is the speed he played all game, all season. He would wear you out, all of you. Larry showed Jordan what it took to be the star that he became. MJ would not had been on the dream team unless Larry stepped in. A commercial shoot a Larry's place and court, cemented their friendship, and MJ found out, over lunch prepared by Larry's mom, that MJ was her favorite player. Hilarious.

You had some good observations about the differences in eras. The rules back then were set up to emphasize team play. Defenses were more compact and like you said ball handling rules were much more strict, which made it harder to drive off the dribble in the half court. Most of the guards back then could do more advanced dribble moves like the do today, they just weren't allowed by the rules and coaching. Many of the greats of today would be great in the 80s and 90s but they would have to change their games a lot. The gather step would be gone, although the league was still pretty liberal with traveling for the stars back then too. The 3 and D guys wouldn't exist or if they did, they would be 9th or 10th men on the bench. Not because they aren't skilled enough but because the coaches didn't believe in playing that way so there would be no role for them. It was a totally different game. It was still played inside out most of the time.

    Young man...
    🙏🏻👏🙏🏻👏🙏🏻👏
I WISH more people, JUST IN GENERAL, had this knowledge, cuz believe me, IT IS KNOWLEDGE, about the game.
AND had it in abundance like you where you can go off for 70 seconds and point out that you UNDERSTAND how different the game is, how it's evolved AND devolved, and really, how regardless or not of how many guys can shoot from anywhere and have unbelievable physical skills, that it's leveled out from what was and wasn't called a foul, or a violation, or what you simply COULD do/get away with back THEN, compared to the damn diarrhea taken on the rule book that players do now...
And the issue many forget is that it's not entirely the players' fault---- if the ref ain't calling it, it's the same as when Rodman would yank on players' shorts and shove and grab their junk (lol), and it wouldn't be called or the refs didn't see it.
Everyone is gonna grab that little edge if they can, and if it happens so much that it just becomes how the game is played nowadays, how u gonna blame a 19 year old kid, who ONLY knows THAT level of play???
The game should just be called objectively by the rulebook; no superstar or home team calls. No bending the rules on how many steps are taken or how u can dribble....
Just have the refs MEMORIZE the rule book, even if it means an extra 5 years of training or whatever they call it, and then call the game as if every player is named JOHN SMITH, all have the same jersey, and all are subject to THE RULES.
    Period. Amen.
And bring back the hand check lol... and flagrant fouls go back to only being called if a guy gets CLOBBERED... and lean into more "non-calls/flow of the game," rather than calling FOUL AND 1 if a guy finishes his shot clean, but at the end is just barelyyyy grazed by the tip of a defenders finger.
LET THE PLAYERS PLAY. DONT LET THEM GET DEMOLISHED. BUT REMEMBER THAT THE GAME IS A PHYSICAL SPORT, SO LET GUYS DEFEND, LET GUYS GO HARD TO SCORE
You'd see an overnight change in how much better the fans view this sport

Bird is also the only one Jordan couldn’t beat. In 1988 Jordan won all major categories including MVP. Bird did not. They played against each other 4 times that year. Bird won 3 out of those 4 times. (They went head to head in the playoffs prior and each time Bird defeated Jordan). Keep in mind Jordan is at the beginning of his career and Bird is near the end of his career and dealing with plenty of injuries.
Bird is the only major competitor of Jordan’s to consistently out perform Jordan when it came to battle against each other.

@jjjones8609 oh I'm aware... but Jordan was still young... if Bird didn't do driveways in the off-season (lol, well just grandma's I think), and get hurt, and played another 5, 6 years or so, when Jordan finally had a guy who developed into a teammate to trust, while he and Phil were on the same page, and Jordan finally beat Detroit and Magic 4-1 to win his 1st.... THAT wpulda been what I'm sure woulda been multiple playoff matchups that I'd universe hop into to see...
I'm no Jordan guy; he's the GOAT,,but I'm a Knicks fan, so screw him lol... but I'm not so sure "prime" Jordan woulda continued to lose to Bird--- but I CANNOT say that with full confidence!
And I'm not even gonna get into healthy Bird alt universe Celtics WITH who woulda hands down been MJ's absolute TRUE nemesis, and arguably what woulda developed into a rivalry at worst on the same level as Magic/Bird, and u gotta know by now I'm talking about the biggest WHAT IF in ALL OF SPORTS, if Len Bias didnt die...
A kid like Bias, growing into his prime under 80s Celtics/Larry Bird tutelage, I mean my GOD....People think Wemby landed in a great situation with POP on the Spurs..
90-99 Jordan v Bias, probably around 8 of those 10 years in the playoffs, depending on the matchups....smh....
At the full blown selfish display of being a fan (i.e. putting aside a young man's tragic DEATH), being robbed of that for a decade or so is something IMPERATIVE for every NBA fan to know

Bird broke more ankles than anyone in history. Defending him was almost impossible, he could score on you and make you look dumb, he could pass it on you and make you look worse. Defenders had to commit to defending one or the other. It was like a soccer goalie on a penalty kick.

The thing is that if these guys were playing today they would have grown up in the 2000s with today's better training methods, especially weight training, today's supplementation today's sports medicine and today's basketball shoes I mean they were playing in flat Converse sneakers. So they would all be bigger stronger and faster today than they were back in the day.
