Bird retired in August 1992, right after the 1992 Olympics.
The retirement ceremony was held in February 1993. It was an over 2 hr. event. The Boston Garden was sold out. There was no game, just the ceremony.
It gave the fans a chance to farewell Bird, and it gave Bird the opportunity he wanted to show his appreciation for the fans.
It's available on YT. A slightly over 2-hour video.

When Larry started his first year with the Celtics.. they won 61 more games with just putting Larry in the game.. the only change they made.. Larry Legend coming on to the team. That's impressive on its own.

Larry Bird is a deep rabbit hole to fall into, but I guarantee that the more you learn, the more you will be impressed.
If Prime Bird ('86ish) played in today's game, he would still dominate as an all-around threat. If Larry had access to today's nutrition, rehab/recovery tech, and medical advances? He would DECIMATE! He would play into his 40's and still be a force to contend with. His mental toughness and drive were next level due to his upbringing.

If you total the mvp votes for 9 years in a row, he had 67% of all votes during that period. He really was one of the greatest player to ever play, most likely in the top 5 of all time.

Damn... People trying to dunk on me that need to find a dictionary or an editor and chill.
FYI, THIS is the definition I was alluding to: "to cause great destruction or harm to" (from Merriam-Webster) That's because Bird wouldn't just dominate them. He would DESTROY them! He would rip this mentally weak league apart. Bird Flu would be chronic in today's league with him playing.
That said, everyone is here on YT to be entertained. Let's all sit back and enjoy. ✌️

Young man, I watched Bird during his hay day! I promise you, if you dig into Birds History you will come to realize that there is a very REAL reason why they call Bird, Larry Legend! This man was a Stone Cold Assassin, ALL of the Superstars that went up against him were scared of him. Bird made the Elites look stupid. He is also the toughest mu*ha fu*ka to ever step onto the court. For me Bird IS the #1 All Time GOAT!

Interesting facts about Bird. 1, He broke his finger and had to have surgery on it. Before he signed his contract with the Celtics. Said he never had the same feel for the ball after that. 2. In 1985, he broke his back putting in a driveway for his mom. Never took pain meds for it. His dr would lock his back in place, so he could play. 3, He had fractured his face twice over the years, continued to play with a concussion and double vision. There are more stories about him playing injured.

I was a Houston Rockets fan, but whenever the Celtics came to town I knew there would be a show. We had Ralph Sampson as our big guy, but there was a bit of a problem: Ralph was hothead. And Larry knew it.
So Larry knew just when to start trash talking Ralph. And Ralph would always fall for the bait. I don’t think Larry was ever satisfied until Ralph was called in a technical or started swinging.
Larry was never afraid to scrap with Ralph if that’s what Ralph wanted. Either way, Larry went away smiling. Whenever the guys in red played the guys in green, you could be sure there was going to be some fireworks.

The year Bird came into the league was the first year that the 3 point shot became a thing. So he didn't practice it in high school or college. But the first 3 years of the 3 point competition Bird won it. He didn't compete in that competition again after that either because of injuries or scheduling, so he was never beat at it. In the finals of his first 3 point contest he had a score of 22 out of a possible 30 points.

They say the Bird may have saved the NBA but everyone knows it was the combo of Bird/Johnson. Bird always gave Johnson his flowers. He had a lot of respect for Magic and they had a strange rival/friendship bond. Larry actually invited Magic to visit him and his mother at his home farm and play on his private court and have supper with them. Mind you this was back when segregation was going on etc..

Don’t remember the two names but Larry once challenged two younger players to a 2v1, first to 7. The only catch was he got ball first. The two young guys won, but only because they stopped him from making his 7th shot in a row 🤣

Bird is like Kawhi Leonard in that he can be considered the GOAT if you only look at a few years in their primes. Otherwise they were too injured.

Yes the skill level is highlighted today, But is it because they are better or is it because they are so protected. Could the stars today play in a league there it really got physical. Today, practically no contact, Larry, Magic and Kareem would dominate. Give me those three in their prime with two others who were decent players I am not sure they would lose a game. I am 75. I watched them play then and I watch them play now. Believe me. The Bird Magic era was NBA ball at its highest level to this day. Nobody since has been as skilled in all aspects of the game as Larry Bird. Shooting, passing, team oriented and defensive play. GOAT? I dunno. When players are that good what difference does it make if it was Jordan or Bird. I pick Bird but that is just me. I get other's opinions.

This is the thing, people like to say he's the cliche white player, attaching the word unathletic.... and you look at that play where he threw a shot up, and got his own rebound... who in the world would call that unathletic?th-cam.com/video/1waiZl9TKa8/w-d-xo.html

Jordan is the Goat "BUT" Bird was the best all-round player. Imagine Bird playing in this Era. He would be shooting 10 three's a game.

Steph curry career almost never happened, because he got hurt a lot early on. Game had to get softer for today’s players. It’s not like the 80’s couldn’t have just picked Reggie miller style players. Instead it was more Zion William types.

I was a Showtime fan who started watching in 1980. So I saw too much of Bird & McHale. In hindsight damn Bird was equal to Magic & Kareem together. Even worse when you learn Bird told Worthy the game winning play BEFORE the inbound in a FINALS game!
