    The amount of joy I felt when you talked about being a disabled costumer- I have been hand sewing from the sofa because sitting at a sewing machine just is not in the cards right now. And you've made such beautiful things! But yes the psychology of trying to do anything as a disabled person is just... society has pre-programed us to feel a lot of guilt. I always have to remind myself that my best does not equal pushing myself to the edge. My best is doing what I can to make sure that I can continue tomorrow, even if that means resting today. There is no shame in taking care of our bodies or minds, and we deserve to have comfort in our lives.

    As I’ve gotten more comfortable with sewing as a disabled person, I’ve gone to the opposite- almost entirely hand sewing. But that’s because sitting at a machine (even one that has a start/stop feature) is just really painful, which means I can only sew in very short bursts. But I can hand sew all day, and so I do. It works for me. And that’s the really important thing about sewing as a disabled person- learning what works for you.

    • @RetroClaude
      @RetroClaude  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      This!!! 🙌 Finding what works for you is so important. We're all different and I'm glad you've found a way to keep sewing 💚

      Same. Sitting at a sewing machine hurts and exhausts me. Hand sewing I can do anywhere and in any position and for some reason doesn't hurt my fingers. So suddenly I am all about it, even if it means I take forever.

    • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EnnameMori in the end, it might even be faster for me. Sure, I could get through maybe two medium sized seams on a machine in 5 minutes, but I then don’t see anything more until the next day, or the day after.
      I think I probably am faster with hand sewing.

    • @EnnameMori
      @EnnameMori 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@katherinemorelle7115 I think you are right. Even when I do put the effort in to sitting at the sewing machine, I am usually in so much pain I make a lot of errors and end up unpicking things forever, then give up as I have been there for half a day and need to rest.

      As a borderline disabled person (depression and arthritis - I'm definitely a spoonie!), I don't have the time most days to set up everything for machine sewing, so I handsew a lot. Plus, I have to keep an eye on my kids, which isn't easy when my back is to the room. On the other hand, I'm a big fan of "if they'd had it, they'd have used it". You do you!
      Btw @retroclaude I recently watched your CoCovid video on sewing while disabled, and I've been incorporating a lot of your mindset suggestions into my established practices, and I actually feel like I'm getting more projects finished. Yay!

  • @MeMe-Moi

    I consider all patterns to be friendly suggestions.
    I hear you on pushing yourself too far to "prove" yourself or to "catch up" after having to take time out for injuries, pain, or just to take a mental break because I need to focus on something else. I am very lucky to have good friends who will call me out when they see me pushing too much and remind me as needed that rest is a requirement, too.

    I totally get feeling like you need to prove to yourself that you can do something when you're disabled. I try hard to get the balance right but after a flare I'm always desperate to do something crafty. It's tricky! Loving having a TH-camr in a similar position to me. It makes me feel more normal 💙

    CS Lewis describes cambric in The Horse and His Boy (1954) as being, "as fine as a handkerchief, so that the bright red tunic beneath it showed through." So it could be that cambric did indeed have a different definition back then

    God, yeah the guilt of taking time off I feel that. I used to take summatriptan for my migraines cause even though it caused real bad heart pains the migraine went away and I could go to work, I only stopped when it eventually caused me to go to the ER with such bad angina it was almost a heart attack. I still have problems about pushing myself too far, though not to that extent. I hope you did ok all things said, it's not good to do that to ourselves lol.

    Going up the stairs was worth it! I tend to do a mix of hand and machine because I can do both. Sometimes hand sewing is great other times, having the machine do it is great too. Also now you have done some embroidery you will have a better idea of the time it will take for your other projects, so you can plan that in better for you and your energy levels.

    Oh and point (a couple of years late!) about “cambric”, which has more to do with the colour than the weight. In that period of time, even into the early 1900s, children were given “cambric tea”. Looking at the books from the Little House series by Laura Ingalls-Wilder, Ma/Caroline gives the girls cambric tea which was warm milk with a bit of hot black tea added until it was just the colour of cambric! So very weak. I do this for my own kids! So that’s my knowledge of cambric!

    Hi,I avoid hand stitching and embroidery now because it makes my hands play up, I have a plan what I'm doing it it's housework that's it for the day, gardening is another whole day even if I only actually do 2 blocks of 15-20 minute s, and yes I get very frustrated 😞

    that back to front, left to right thing is a real nuisance, like when you very deliberately put fusible interfacing on the right side of the fabric ;(. Nice thing about how tidy your hand stitching looked from here, is that I thought the ridge was a decorative feature.

    Claude, I REALLY like to watch your channel but I am finding it soooo hard. I was on the fence if I want to say anything because I DO more than you know understand your health issues as I am too 100% disabled. With that said, I watch people sew on TH-cam to get away from that...so hearing you talking about your disability all the time is like.😖😫 nails on a chalk board for me. It makes me have to think about the very thing I am "trying" to get away from and relax hense watching an learning one of my crafts and loves (sewing.) I hope you understand where I am coming from? 💜

    • @AnnabelleAndBensAntics
      @AnnabelleAndBensAntics 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I mean if watching her videos is as bad as nails on a chalk board then your putting yourself through a lot of suffering for little reason considering you could just stop watching whenever you like. Its her channel, she can share/not share whatever she wants and I personally find it very interesting to hear her talk about how her disability effects how she approaches her sewing projects. Its incredibly informative and helps raises awareness on issues many of us never think about. So thankyou Claude for being awesome and educational!

    • @RetroClaude
      @RetroClaude  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'm very sorry you feel like that but I'm not going to stop talking about being disabled. It's a part of my life and I can't separate my sewing from my disability because they are so interconnected. I will not be offended if you decide my channel isn't for you, but I have had so much positive feedback from other disabled people about how hearing me talk about sewing with a disability has helped them and that's what I want to continue to do.
