Best song out. I race pigeons from Barcelona to uk, 827 miles, best buzz ever seeing them return. This track makes my mother cry, as her dad was very similar. Hard times, not many ways of getting this feeling , even these days! Amazing
I love to sing this song of Dave's out at my local folk clubs whenever I can and it always goes down well. It is such an emotional song to sing. Thanks for writing it Dave.
I have just been cast as Charlie in a radio play called The King of Rome for broadcast later this year. I have never been so moved by a story as this one has moved me made even more poignant because it really happened.. The music by Dave Sudbury and by the Unthanks is amazing. Cornucopia Radio in Sheffield are making the radio play.
I was bought here by a chance conversation with a fellow radio ham who recommended this song when we were chatting about the wonders of migratory birds. A wonderful song.
I have only heard Garnet Rogers sing this song but this is one incredible video. I am glad I found it here and able to listen to it over and over again. A remarkable story about hopes and dreams. The funny thing is ... I hate pigeons!
I read about the King of Rome in am magazine for Derbyshire whilst in a Doctors surgery in Long Eaton (In Derbyshire). It was really good to read about because not only do I really like pigeons myself but for the inspiration and determination of both the owner and the King himself.
My pigeons, just like poet to me, like wings, roaring into brook street, 1913, dream , champion from Italy, put it in a basket and send to rome, charlie we told you say, ya I know but I had to try. When you live around here the ground seems so near. The king of rome, perched outside your room, I knew you'd make it back to me, you , birds lifted on shining wing
True, but for me something else is going on which I can't easily pin down. Something about reaching for hope (like we all do) and feeling surprised when that hope is realised. After all, very few people achieve their dreams... Thanks for responding btw! This is easily one of my favourite songs.
@Patches9412 You can use: (G)In the west end of Derby lived a working man (G)Says I can't fly but my (C)Pidgeons can (G)And when I set them free (G)It's just like part of me (G)Gets lifted up on (D)Shining (G)Wings. I'll work them out properly later ( ad capo to taste :) )
Hello Pigeon-watchers...! Original uploader (comedyhunter) suggested I post my own version of this lovely song as a video response, which I've now done. Please have a listen and leave me a comment, or view my channel (jonesthephones) for numerous other folky-fuddy-duddy tracks, Cheers, Alun :)
There is a beautiful version of this song by The Brewers Daughter, well worth checking out if you can find it. Great slideshow captures the spirit I think, well done 💀
I cry because it was 1913 so we all know what was going to happen in Charlie's life the following year. It was a final glimpse of joy before the slaughter
I'd never heard the original of this. I only ever heard the version that Half Man Half Biscuit did in session on the Andy Kershaw BBC Radio 1 show in September 2004.
I think it was Derbyshire life but I have absolutely no idea what edition it was. I think it was about two years old though. It did say much, it just had a picture of the taxidermy and only few paragraphs of information about the story. No I have not, I should look for it, I only have heard Half man, half biscuits version.
@Patches9412 OK...Capo at 1st (G)In the west end of (D)Derby lived a working (C)man (G)Says I can't (D)fly but my Pigeons (C)can (D)And when I set them (C)free (D)It's just like part of (G)me (D)Gets lifted (C)up on (D)Shining (G)Wings. :)
This song always makes me cry... Impossible to say why.

I was bought here by a chance conversation with a fellow radio ham who recommended this song when we were chatting about the wonders of migratory birds. A wonderful song.
Hi, Hope you enjoyed it. funny how people arrive at things from random conversations isnt it
Now here’s a comment i really like. Ham radios and pigeons.
Wonderful song. After it died in 1946 the pigeon was presented to Derby Museum. It was stuffed and is still on display there.
Tears every time. Thank you

A very moving song - great to hear Dave Sudbury's original words and music on TH-cam at last. I'll look out for the book, too!

Came to this via The Unthanks version. Lovely to hear it in it's raw state.
Iron man taking a dive? 🤣
There is a beautiful version of this song by The Brewers Daughter, well worth checking out if you can find it. Great slideshow captures the spirit I think, well done 💀
Lol nice daughter
HMHB brought me here and I'm glad!
Yes, more people should watch this. What magazine was it? Derbyshire Life? what month?
Have you seen the Unthanks version of this song?
Andy
Bill Whiston sang this at our Ukulele Club - wonderful.
Its an awesome song isnt it
@@comedyhunter Quite amazing - it's a song of hope. Try Kate Rusby - My Young Man - not too proud to admit I shed a few tears.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
I think they actually follow roads like a map and NOT using Earth magnatism like we originally thought.
Glad you liked the show.
Why are people dislike this 😡💔.
I dont know, some people do that for the sake of it
Oh, fabulous - II have also arrived after seeing the Unthanks first.... just beautiful.
what a lovely story.
The chords are quite simple, G D C (with variations) throughout. Capo on fret 1 to play along with the video.
I think it was Derbyshire life but I have absolutely no idea what edition it was. I think it was about two years old though. It did say much, it just had a picture of the taxidermy and only few paragraphs of information about the story.
No I have not, I should look for it, I only have heard Half man, half biscuits version.
Cheers, Yes he won the race.
