- As the recession deepens in San Diego County, more families are finding themselves standing in food lines and losing their jobs and homes. In the San Diego Unified School District the second largest district in the state of California - nearly 60 percent of all families are eligible for the free and reduced-cost lunch program. More than 900 children in this one school district are homeless. Some families are living in their cars, others in shelters and motels. KPBS Television presents, San Diego in Recession, a special documentary on the new face of the homeless and the hungry, produced in high definition.

I don’t understand the lady is homeless with 6 kids and pregnant? Why would she get pregnant? Or make sure not to get pregnant? Come on ! Any body with a little sense would make sure she would not ever get pregnant again , they are not helping with their own problem 😔🤷🏼♀️
This video is eleven years old. That’s an entire decade before covid 19 aka big rona entered the chat. Now millions more are facing eviction in a few months, many more Americans are now going hungry.
The news lady said they have no way to clean the RV but that is a lie. You can purchase a bottle of cleaner for one buck at the dollar store. I’m sure someone can loan the two of them a rag or two.
This was filmed a long time ago, starting in 2013, I started saving money like there's no tomorrow, banking as much as I can. If I were to lose my job now and didn't earn a penny, I could support my family for 5 years. I will never become homeless and I will never want to ever worry about paying my bills. For the past 10 years, I've been buying only used, buying things that I only need, paying everything with cash and have zero debt. ,
KPBS keep up the good work . We need to fix this and save California.
Thomas and his brother have each other. Many homeless have just themselves to rely on.

Amazing, a 19 year old on food stamps, simply amazing.
One of them should be able to get a Christmas job somewhere. Amazon doesn’t require job interviews. He should’ve applied for welfare until he’s able to get regular work. Anyway I hope things look up for him soon.

I used to work for general relief 30 or so years ago. When they implemented the mandate that a drug test would be necessary to get the benefit, we had a drop of more than 85% of our homeless applicants show up. Yet we don't have enough drug treatment programs in San Diego. Why put this housing problem on the backs of taxpayers.

The brothers are fortunate they have a RV to stay in some people don't even have that go to the Dollar Tree and get a bottle of cleaner or even some food pantries donate cleaning supplies. Looks like they have money to smoke

exactly and with companies receiving more applications than the previous year it just isnt that easy to find employment. Its a terrible situation for people do be in.

Thomas lives at the beach, the highest cost of living area in a high cost city in a high cost state. I would like to live at the beach for free too. Do you think the state of California would gibe me a free ride living at the beach? If Thomas wants to support himself, he can drive to Texas or some state with good employment prospects. But Thomas would rather make excuses than work, rather hang out at the beach, smoking dope and drinking beer. Thomas is doing just what he wants to do - and not do, like working.
I dont think that illegal aliens have anything to do with unemployment since they are WORKING. Even if it is under the table for cash, they use the same money to buy goods and services. Some people just make a choice to not work for a low paying job and live off government assistance sor not work at all like Thomas the rockstar.

tom jackson it has occured to me. However, there are plenty of jobs that many that are not illegal aliens. Will not take. Picking the fields to bring your fruit and vegetables at a lower price. Many are expecting crazy hourly rates to work the fields. Ask all the farmers who they prefer and why? Cheap labor and no nonsense. Even if they do getva paycheck with a fake social, they still pay their taxes of which they will never see a tax refund. Thats free money given to the government. How about those that work in fast food, many want $15 per hour yet many cannot get an order correct. There are jobs out there, all people have to do is to humble down and be realistic.

Moses That poor dog ??? Go to shelters for homeless dogs and you'll see poor dogs....Go to China and see how they are boiled alive for food, and skinned alive for greedy women' coats... Look at dogs who are tied up with chains just guarding a piece of land...in the heat, the cold etc....Go to labs that use animals including dogs, to test their products....This dog is NOT poor....He has company almost all day....Has a comfortable carpet to lie on, gets taken for walks....Hes elderly so is somewhat arthritic....but don't you worry, that dog is doing fine !
