Vietnam's first Communist Party Congress for five years has come to an end in Hanoi.
The 4 day meeting - which set economic targets and named a new slightly younger politburo - was attended by delegates from around the world.
Even the old enemy - America - was represented at the gathering.
Delegates from left wing political parties in nearly three dozen countries gathered in Hanoi to observe and participate in the Vietnamese Communist Party's eighth national congress.
They talked about dealing with the free market, about training workers for a high-tech world, and about putting practice ahead of ideology.
One of the main topics of discussion was Vietnam's economic reform program.
The Vietnamese claim they can gain the economic benefits of a free market without paying social costs in terms of health, education and social equality.

In other words, economic prosperity with complete social justice. If that is possible, hey, they're trying to do it. You gotta say great. And any Communist has to support any effort that will bring about that result.

Some of the delegates see the world swinging to the left again.
They claim corporate downsizing, unemployment, hungry pensioners, lawless tycoons - are encouraging a move towards the left across the world.
Communists are sharing power in India and Italy, while former Communists have won elections in Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
" And we are also delighted to the fact that Vietnam managed to rise from the ashes after all these wars, they managed to be where they are today. I think the policies which they are implementing now, as part of rebuilding the country, they are implementing them
successfully. And if they are succeeding here, I don't see why it can't succeed in other countries. The perception that socialism has failed, I don't agree with it. "
SUPER CAPTION: Solly Zwane, African National Congress
    SOUNDBITE: (Italian)
" The end of the Soviet Union created a completely new phase in the world. The Soviet Union represented the principal fountain of richness for almost all socialist countries. With the end of the Soviet Union, it's vital to experiment with new paths."
SUPER CAPTION: Oliviero Diliberto, Communist Refoundation of Italy
Delegates say simply because the Soviet model failed, doesn't mean socialism has nothing to offer.
The challenge for left wing parties is to develop models that create prosperity and social justice.
Many of the delegates believe the fall of the Soviet Union was actually a boon to the socialist movement in general.
They say the collapse destroyed the image of communism as a monolithic force with only one true path.
Vietnam is still a single-party state and far from the western ideal of a democracy.
But there is increasing economic freedom.
    SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
" Some of the difference is in the political system, because the economic situations are close, almost the same. Here (Vietnam) they do it in a different political system and context. We're proposing the same economic solutions, the same economic system being proposed here, but in a different political context, a pluralistic political context. "
SUPER CAPTION: Victor Hugo Tinoco, Sandinista Front of Nicaragua
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
SUPER CAPTION: Andrie Brie, German Social Democratic Party
Despite the continuing trend towards a market economy, Vietnam's communist leaders are as much in control as ever.

thank you so much ap archive... it is still a long and winding road... plus, the effect of the emerging computer age is too different for obsolete brains to evaluate the pace of socialism/communism in the succeeding generations... though, it is noticed that study of marx-lenin socialism/communism is more and more gaining grounds in the global youths interests in understanding the truth of issues and matters since lenin and bolsheviks time up to the present... interests of global youths concerning marx-lenin socialism/communism progressively increasing and improving...

Personally, I find it so hard to believe that Vietnam had been undergoing capitalist reforms like China did. In a way, Vietnam is already a Communist-in-name-only country. How outrageous!

IMO, in Vietnam, people don't think much about that, the government from the beginning did not completely follow communism but rather nationalism hidden inside, and communism is just the a method or an idea for them to form the peace and unite in Vietnam, hence, as long as the country keeps developing and people have a better life, there is no reason to follow communism. It is also good to note that there is just the communist party who is in charge of the government, Vietnam is socialism by its official name, but actually it is trying to reach socialism from capitalism.

@@khoavo6631 - Well, I think that the assumption has been about Vietnam not being interested in achieving Communism as the final stage from socialism and capitalism. Like what else is there?

@@robertpolanco1973 I think that assumption of mine is somehow proved by the history. Since late 1980's, the government has started to make the economy being more capitalism. It was more than 30 years from now, that proofs my opinion that Vietnamese government does not want to bring the country to communism, but rather bring the country to being more developped.
