It's too bad I was too young to fully GET this music back when it was new & celebrated for its artistry. You go Carmen! You truly showed the world how it's SUPPOSED to be done! One.
Jeez that's fine! I also love Anita O'Day's big band version from the 63 Japan TV show appearance. Two totally different takes I know but both are fantastic.
Walter Perkins on drums, Norman Simmons on piano, bass ? I spoke to the great N. Simmons a couple of days ago. Still kickin! I worked with W. Perkins back in the 80's. What a pleasure. Thank you for the posting.
It's quite a shock to see this singer from decades past looking so elegant, acting blasé, but singing those notes the way she does look effortless. It's awesome the way she wield her carbon based musical instrument.
What a shame so many of these great singers came from the same generation. We could certainly use them today beginning with Ms Carmen MacRae. That unmistakable, sultry and witty style.
Carmen is one of my favorite jazz singers and she does this song justice, but you must listen to Dinah Washington's version - it's full of brass and sass.
To sing Porter you need to at least sound like you've been around the block more than a few times. Carmen is perfect for Porter. And so is Mabel Mercer.
Lot of times I stress and panic. I pray to God. Then go to Carmen MacRae.
That's BEAUTIFUL!!
One of the greatest , she nails this song the best I feel.

I love how the beauty of the song and her singing, mingles with the toughness of the lady.
She had range and control. Wow!
Carmen a great singer from a very short list of great singers.
What an incredibly handsome woman. Whew!! Of course, incredibly musical, too. The great Carmen McCrae.
