  • RARE OLDIES SOUNDIES WITH MR CAB CALLOWAY ! Cabell "Cab" Calloway (December 25, 1907 -- November 18, 1994) was an American jazz singer and bandleader.
    Calloway was a master of energetic scat singing and led one of the United States' most popular African American big bands from the start of the 1930s through the late 1940s. Calloway's band featured performers including trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Adolphus "Doc" Cheatham, saxophonists Ben Webster and Leon "Chu" Berry, New Orleans guitar ace Danny Barker, and bassist Milt Hinton. Calloway continued to perform until his death in 1994 at the age of 86.

There seems something sort of humor and grotesque in these expressions, especially on the Mini the Moocher performance here.

    When I was a kid in the early sixties, the Harlem Globetrotters came to town, Williston North Dakota. Cab Calloway sang as the “halftime act”. A lot of the kids knew who he was because of the cartoon shows on local TV, which played a lot of cartoons from the thirties and forties, that included a number of cartoons with characters that were parodies of famous singers, actors and performers from that earlier time. One cartoon was a caricature of Calloway doing Minnie the Moocher . I remember very well hearing in person his powerful, unique and pleasurable voice. He was the highlight of the show.

      Maybe he was playing the Clown at the local bar, trying for a free drink... On a different level; Maybe he was being overtly sarcastic with his silliness, in an effort to mock his audience's (possibly Whites) lack of appreciation for the depth and history of the song,,, playing the Scaramouche.. apparently harmless, but in fact sly, conceded even dangerous.... All the while, his unwitting audience giggle like fools... Many layers to this

      Dizzy Gillespie... I recognized the cheeks, although they were in their formative stage. I was just lucky enough to meet the legendary "Diz of Gillespie" at a Baha'i Faith meeting in 1983...he bonded instantly with my twins, who were 4 yrs old at the time, & spent the time after that meeting playing with them, puffing those amazing cheeks out to make them fall over laughing, & being almost as much of a kid as they were.
      He spoke of "the Cab of El Calloway" with the utmost affection & respect, even though they'd famously had their "missteps", as he called them, rolling his eyes & chuckling...we hung on his every word, & he couldn't have been more gracious, kind, & patient with us as we sat entranced... I remember that brief encounter like it happened yesterday,
      (--but right now I can't
      remember what DAY it was yesterday!!!)& so do my twins, who recently celebrated(with great angst, to be sure) their 41st birthday!!!
      Sir Diz was one of a kind, & so was "Cab, the King of the Calloways"(Dizzy's reference, which made all the grown-ups laugh!!!).
      There's never, ever going to be another like either of these beloved performers.
      God bless 'em forEVER.

I’m so happy for having the experiences I have had playing music, if it weren’t for playing trumpet I don’t think I’d know this masterpiece.minus the second note that’s played is off key. But we won’t talk about whose fault that was.

      I agree. I also think he flawlessly displayed his theatric chops such to the point that he vidily painted pictures which corresponded to each scene in the song. The man was, and still is, a legend

    Folks, I'm goin' down to St. James Infirmary
    See my baby there;
    She's stretched out on a long, white table
    She's so sweet, so cold, so fair
    Let it go, let it go, god bless her
    Wherever she may be
    She will search this wide world over
    But she'll never find another sweet man like me
    When I die, bury me in my straight-leg britches
    Put on a box-back coat and a Stetson hat
    Put a twenty-dollar gold piece on my watch chain
    So you can let all the boys know I died standing pat
    An' give me six crap shooting pall bearers
    Let a chorus girl sing me a song
    Put a red hot jazz band at the top of my head
    So we can raise Hallelujah as we go along
    Folks, now that you have heard my story
    Say, boy, hand me another shot of that booze;
    If anyone should ask you
    You just tell 'em I've got those St. James Infirmary blues

  • @Savadorason1
    @Savadorason1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    -Seeing & hearing him can make 1 realize that us later generations missed out on a LOT of long gone talented ones. From the 1930s to the early 50s he was an MC, r&b singer, comedian, big band leader, & actor. But back then if you had that much talent but were black, most of the media & Hollywood didn't want to recognize you, unless somehow you got through the cracks. But he was still a big name then.
    He probably could have continued his fame if he wanted to get into the then new, 1955 black music named Rock & Roll. He probably laughed & said -That's the teenager's thing, let them have fun.

  • @gildedpeahen876

    Only after seeing this live performance do I see the story like this…Cab is playing a character right now, that’s why he’s all disheveled in street clothes and a beat up hat when he normally dresses, well in nice straight leg britches and a box back coat and a Stetson hat! He is the “cokey” sung about in Minnie the Moocher. A downtrodden junkie. Minnie has overdosed after kicking the gong around one too many times and her cokey boyfriend has had to come ID her beautiful body, laid out on the slab. He gets traumatized by seeing her, and makes peace with his own future death, requesting a jazz party funeral and suitable clothes for a jazz singer.
    The blues, to me, is mournful peace with your own mortality.
