Dredge is a balanced mechanic with a cost and a benefit. The benefit is you get to mill cards and the cost is you have to replace your draws with 4 mana 3/3s or whatever. I'm sure this is what they intended when they designed it.
The siege rhino's just dressed as a panglacial wurm for halloweeen.
I really appreciate the Piloting Discussions for decks during these videos. That Casual-Competitive vibe of actually trying to discuss what choices to make at a higher level is such a huge reason I think Dredge and reanimation are interesting mechanics.
Watching this back is wild, that intro was so fast and professional, no introductions, no points spread, curt intro straight into the gameplay. The evolution of the intro has been beautiful and I adore the modern intros

That Recurring Nightmare in G2 was absurd, it's a good reminder just how strong the card can be.

Yeah, if it costed 5 instead of 3, and made you exile a creature instead of sacrifice a creature I think it would be more balanced

Most of my commander decks have turned into decks that I can shuffle my commander in and play canlander with after watching these guys.
thats interesting, but must suck having to cut cards because your deck is too many points (especially with sol ring being 4)
@@durge12 I was surprised to find out most of my decks don’t even use 10 points. Only one of them fills up the allotted points with Sol Ring, Demonic, and Vampiric tutor. Can thank my local meta for that

I actually really enjoyed hearing Ben giving direction to them offscreen near the end. It makes me happy to see how respectful and competent everyone is in the production process.
I dunno why, but I always ABOSOLUTELY ADORE when Paul speaks up during a stream, or Adam is laughing in the studio next door, or you hear Beej saying hi when he comes in, or whatever. It just makes LRR feel so very alive and real, with all these folks just hanging out around the office. Its not as sterile as normal tv media or whatever.
@@artemi7 It’s especially comforting with all the garbage happening at other production companies to know that LRR is sort of the place we all imagine it to be.
Would love to see a cut scene of Wheeler and Serge discussing what they kept in their opening hands and why . Love this content so much ❤️
these videos are so incredibly informative, format agnostic. i've been playing for a few decades now and never ever really understood how to play dredge but this genuinely helps my wrap my mind around it
Something that was really nice on the latest Canlander FNPF was very quickly talking about the points in the deck. I know that can be tricky for recorded games because it will change, but it might be nice to have alongside the brief deck descriptions.
at 48:25 serge didnt spend mana to cast recurring nightmare which led to him casting it twice. not being rude just need to point out cause it helps to notice that stuff!

I love this series! I think it would be really cool if at the beginning Serge and Wheeler showed their opening hands and whatever cards they put on the bottom if they took mulligans.

Unlikely, since they recorded all of these at the same time several weeks ago (notice how they're wearing the same clothes and Wheeler is a bit sick in all of them), while the deck was brewed fairly recently. Maybe they're producing another season right now, it might be included there.
Please keep these coming I am so excited to watch these every time they come out!

Re-watching this in late 2024 and it's so fun seeing singleton dredge with all the unusual includes you don't get in other formats. It's just *chef's kiss*. I mean Haunted Dead side by side Ashen Ghoul are you kidding me? Hell yeah dude

Wood Elves is one of my favourite cards. That sequencing with Sunny T and Recurring Nightmare in G2 is so stunning.

57:10 The line of play I think I would've made here looks like this:
Play recurring nightmare. Sac voice of resurgence for any creature.
Attack with Sun Titan alone. It returns Voice. It trades with Stinkweed Imp.
Post combat play Recurring Nightmare, sac voice to get back sun titan, getting back voice.
Then place recurring nightmare a third time (using 9 of his 10 mana). Sac the voice to get back another creature.
Ends the board with 7-9 creatures, three of them being elementals.
I don't think Surge noticed that he could just easily loop and recur sun titan+voice to scale up number of creatures while also double hitting off sun titan.
It didn't end up mattering but I am never surprised at how nuts Recurring Nightmare is.
I keep coming back to this episode, please bring back dredge!

When serge cast eldritch evaluation in game one I got so excited because I thought he was going to get endurance
I don’t think he realized that EE can get lower cmc targets, it’s the odd one out of pod effects

Serge, what do you think of Serra Paragon in your deck? It doesn't get back any of the large items and it's a once only but there is a lot of value that can be added.
I'm not great at can lander, but would surge benefit from having a dryad arbor in that list? Gets grabbed by wood elves and can be sacced for recurring nightmare
i obviously don't play the format but my limited knowledge of recurring nightmare through magic's history makes me wonder why survival of the fittest isn't in serge's deck (fauna shaman never getting to untap and use it's survival effect only adds to my wonder). serge's points are/were DT (4) natural order (3) birthing pod (2) jitte (1) so i dunno how you'd find 2 points there for survival beyond swapping out DT for VT (which is only 2) or even imperial seal (1).
a points list discussion would've been cool and im very interested to see a north 100 on the upcoming points changes and how decks like these are affected

"this [Dredge] doesn't feel like magic": what it looks like, (and probably feels like), is modern Yu-Gi-Oh, where the graveyard is just another weird deck, and things are constantly going in and out from all other zones
Speaking as someone who often forgets to gain life off of Courser, Serge sure had a lot of kissed Courser triggers.
I was so hype when Wheeler loving called my creation his favourite annoying deck. We did it baybee!!
Wheeler forgot to gain 2 life from Brownscale in game 3. Too bad his digging was doomed anyway without Riftstone Portal, to tap Bazaar for mana and be able to start playing. Still a good poster child game for dredge.
Sincere Suggestion : Put Anafenza, the Foremost into any Abzan deck. SO many of these high-power decks seem to manipulate the graveyard and she just poops on their day.

If Stinkweed Imp deals combat damage to a creature, triggering its ability, and then that creature's controller responds by giving it protection from black; it still gets destroyed, yes?
Yes, that ability doesn't target and protection ironically doesn't protect against destroy effects. If you however give it protection before the damage the imp doesn't deal damage to it so the ability doesn't trigger.

Could Serge have not just looped Voice of Resurgence? The more he makes the bigger swings he has? If he spent his mana looping VoR, he'd have 4 7/7's and a VoR in play ready to make a 7/7
was wondering why Serge didn't Eldritch on the Cobra for Endurance near the end of g1, then i remembered EE is cmc +2 and Endurance is only 3 mana -.-

how does the dredge deck win if it activates hermit druid?
probably mills Narcomoeba in the process and plays 1 basic land so Path to Exile and Assassin's Trophy and Field of Ruin don't cause a huge minus. You want brakes in case a control deck has a counterspell ready, you win the game if you mill half your deck anyway.
You play one of the two 1mana Unearth creatures, Dregscape Zombie costs B and Fatestitcher costs U. Play the land Hermit Druid got you to summon Bloodghast. Every other thing that can summon itself from the GY easily costs 2 or more mana, Haunted Dead is the best option.
You sacrifice Hermit Druid + two more creatures to flashback Dread Return targeting Lotleth Giant, which hopefully kills them.
For killing them through Glacial Chasm/Worship/Solitary Confinement there's a more complex line that wins off flashing back SevRec to return Crucible/Ramunap Excavator + Fastbond, to loop Radiant Fountain and Wasteland for infinite mana to kill them with Cut//Ribbons.
If they have Platinum Angel/Empyrion then you'd better be playing Ancient Grudge.
Jesus Christ, that foil MMQ Squee is a couple hundred dollars.

While the card text they showed on screen explicitly says you have to pay the cost for it, the Oracle text has it return for free. It looks like it got changed in Revised, which is weird.
Wheeler's deck looks absolutely miserable to play against and I mean that as a huge compliment.
