Tommy Emmanuel & Larry Campbell: Ashokan Farewell

From the Birchmere, Alexandria, Virginia, 16 September 2023. Tommy Emmanuel headlined the show opened by Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams. Toward the end of Tommy's set, he brought Larry back out, and they played this stunningly gorgeous duet of the great Jay Ungar instrumental, Ashokan Farewell. Best known as the main theme song throughout the Ken Burns/Lynn Novick epic documentary series The Civil War, it was written by Jay after a particularly great group of summer camp students had departed for the season at the camp he served. I played it at my father's funeral, it was always one of his very favorite things I play. This performance brought me to tears.
