  • Join me on this hike in Dartmoor National Park!
Starting at Castle Drogo we follow the "Hunter's Path" down to the river Teign and along to the beautiful Fingle Bridge where I stopped at the Fingle Bridge Inn for a well deserved ice cold lemonade!
It was a beautiful hike in beautiful weather
Castle Drogo was constructed between 1911 and 1930, it was the last castle to be built in England. The client was Julius Drewe, the hugely successful founder of the Home and Colonial Stores. Drewe chose the site in the belief that it formed part of the lands of his supposed medieval ancestor, Drogo de Teigne. The architect he chose to realise his dream was Edwin Lutyens, then at the height of his career. Lutyens lamented Drewe's determination to have a castle but nevertheless produced one of his finest buildings. The architectural critic Christopher Hussey described the result: "The ultimate justification of Drogo is that it does not pretend to be a castle. It is a castle, as a castle is built, of granite, on a mountain, in the twentieth century".
The castle was given to the National Trust in 1974, the first building constructed in the twentieth century that the Trust acquired. The castle is a Grade I listed building. The gardens are Grade II* listed on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

@stuartwilsdon9683 I'm honestly surprised I haven't seen this hike more places, it's a hidden gem, I'd not seen or heard of it before I did it and it turned out to probably be one of my favourites, the fingle bridge inn is a fantastic spot to stop and refuel for the hike back

@ Completely agree. I’ve know Castle Drogo for years but wasn’t aware of the available walks there. This particular one is perfect as it’s a good length for me but mainly because the views are ever changing from the lofty views over the Teign valley, the descent through deciduous woodland to the meander of the river below, and it can be a circular route so you’re not forced to walk back the way you came. Just great. And thank you for the video - great to see.

Looks like a great hike and day was had!
Castle Drogo does sound an awful lot like a game of thrones location 😂 the dothraki leader was Kal'drogo, I'm wondering if Martin was familiar with this place
