      KISS base principle of engineering has been violated... Folding.. yes, angled folding... WTF? No. And why is some fool using Carbon Fiber which dies in UV radiation and cannot take repetitive vibration loads? Inquiring minds want to know...

      Masts and sprits and plenty of other carbon fiber on boats holds up just fine.

      @@SailingUma Change the words Carbon fiber to Fiberglass, and would you say the same ignorant shit? No. No epoxy that is clear can withstand UV radiation even when you add extra UV inhibitors. None. Only question is how long. So, please stop the lies eh. Short term, sure, but then everything works short term. Wood works short term just fine. Said epoxy over the CF will degrade and disappear leaving the CF exposed just like ANY fiberglass... Leading to splinters, structural degradation delamination etc.

    I love the entrepreneurial spirit of this. It kind of gives the impression of a Rube Goldberg machine right now, but once the kinks are worked out with the materials and tolerance to make it fold smoothly, and they sell in volume to make it more cost effective, this is a great idea for more wattage in the tight space of a monohull since it would be easy to store.

    I believe parking /camping rules are the same everywhere, not just where you are in Majorca. You cannot extend an awning attached to an RV or anything similar because it is considered camping if you are in a paid or unpaid designated parking area. Sometimes you can get away with camping on a tailgate or something like that if no one's looking, but that is also frowned upon everything needs to be contained within your vehicle.

    Several sailors have TH-cam videos describing their ways to add solar panels. I am sure Dan and Kika have checked them out. Depending on headroom in the cockpit (how tall is Dan?), several 100W panels could be installed just below the boom and over the dodger (not under the boom for obvious reasons). I guess this would add not less than 400W to the array. I agree that using the railings also makes sense, even adding stainless steel tubes forward. This would allow 2 X 100W on each side, perhaps even three. Combined this would add 800W inputs or more. I would simply look into 100W panels and attach them to the railing with a simple mechanism to raise them to a horizontal level when needed. When the panels are let down (when underway) you even can "hide" them with a cloth. You could repeat this on the stern with possibly room for 2 X 50W panels (I think there is insufficient room for 100 W panels there given the autopilot. The idea would be to make the panels easily available. If the intent is to remove the panels while underway, then the issue becomes one of storage. On passages, the forward berth is typically not used, so storing 4 X 100 W panels is basically 70cm X 105cm X20cm. That footprint is not all that large, compared to the folded solution which indeed has a lot of movable parts and still needs 30 X 30cm storage.

      This is literally the saddest video I have seen on YT in a while. The guy probably thinks he will sell this to RV owners etc... and Carbon Fiber dies in UV light and is hella expensive compared to aluminum which does not for ~same weight and I'll bet they did not use glass which means oxidation of solar cells will happen quickly = dead solar cells quickly.

    That solar panel had a feel of a Star Wars fighter.
    Been thinking of how to maximize solar on a small boat as well for some time. How many Watt is each of those components you put together? Do you think it’s going to have a big impact on power generating potential?
    The design is interesting but I think you guys have been doing it backwards. Instead of a integrated folding system, just a folding system by itself that can accommodate standard panels might be more cost efficient. Solar is, after all a nice weather power source, so deployment is most likely to happen at anchor. I would utilize the bow area to place a folding frame that an be attached to toe rail, lifeline/posts and simply attach standard panels with quick release clips. If you use a voltage booster, like Enphase, any size battery bank can be charged.
    Your system is great as a design concept and would work in space (no gravity) but on a boat with lots of wind around the portability aspect might make it just too fragile. We want longevity and low cost.
    I have seen “walk-on” boat ready solar panels that cost easily $4-6 per watt. That’s super expensive. Your design is going to be expensive manufacture and volume will be too low.
    So, if you can come up with a easy to install frame that uses standard panels and can be used on boats and RVs, then we might have a profitable market.

    • @4philipp
      @4philipp ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perhaps come up with a dinghy mounted frame, like a top half of an octagon globe. With 6-8 panels installed and the dinghy comfortable floating behind your boat without obstructions/shade, you could be making power all day long.
      At one point I even considered a blowup swim platform. Big enough to accommodate 1kw of solar. But also takes up some space on the boat when not in use.

    A folding solar panel for the side of a boat is a great idea. However, a triangular origami type folding plan is massively complex and will never become cost efficient, there are just too many complex parts to make and assemble. It would be far simpler and cheaper to make rectangular panels that hinge /I/and can fold out at anchor (and possibly when motoring in becalmed weather). Stay wires for stability would make the structure simple, cheap, robust and easily repairable.

    Nice CAD user 'frame design' idea ...but perhaps 'cosmetic' or "a solution looking for a problem"?. Why the need to be portable? - Why the need to fold or take down after deployment... adding much cost before deployment? What utility if normal fixed frames and connectors are much cheaper and robust. Many might practically and budget wise just buy what's needed, and go with it...? Fun Thor Heyerdal social vid though.

    "And the panel said!" lol The solar panel project is very interesting. Clearly they will be deployed from the aft sides of Uma. Will you have a set on both sides?
    The next "hot" topic are those paragliders. The ones with power are called powered paragliders or PPGs. The ones flying without power are just paragliders. The powered ones could have taken off almost anywhere with a big enough field. Then flown to that beach site. The regular paragliders needed to launch from some high spot (mountain top) relatively near by.
    My avatar is me flying my hang glider. I also happen to own a paraglider (not powered). I know the most about hang gliding since I started flying them in 1975. But I have also learned a lot about paragliders. Paragliders maintain an airfoil as long as air flows into vents at the leading edge (front) of the canopy. If air flow fails to keep the canopy inflated, then the whole mess simply falls to the ground. This often kills or seriously injures the occupant. The non powered paragliders are often flown in ridge and/or thermal lift. In a small or even large aircraft rough air/turbulence is actually strong thermal lift. Strong thermal lift can cause a paraglider canopy to collapse completely or asymmetrically (on one side only). Canopy collapses both minor or major can happen to every paraglider pilot. In fact, part of their training includes how to get the canopy to reinflate. Reinflating the canopy works almost 100% of the time. For the paraglider occupant who can't get the canopy to reinflate injury or death may be their fate. If the deflation is fairly small, the paraglider will still fly but may be hard to control. A significant number of paraglider occupants give up the sport after a hard to fix (in the air, while flying) collapse or after an injury caused by a collapse. Of two very skilled paragliding guys I know, both have kept flying even after they broke their back due to a hard landing. ? ? ?
    I encourage people to give hang gliding a try. The wing is held open by an aircraft aluminum tubing framework and can't collapse (if assembled properly before flight). I have encountered serious turbulence of more than one kind and continued flying without worries moments later. I've never had to work hard to "reinflate" my hang glider! LOL The issue with hang gliding is that it's harder to learn. But it is easier to master! Paragliding is easier to lean but harder to master. That has to do with the wing collapsing while flying problem.
    I think that powered paragliders (PPGs) are a bit safer than soaring paragliders because they do not need thermal lift (aka turbulence) to keep them in the air. However, having a loud, heavy motor, plus fuel, and a (slicer dicer) propeller directly behind you, does not appeal to me at all.
    So, I encourage either or both of you to give hang gliding a try. The easiest way is to do a tandem (two place) flight with a professional tandem instructor. There are places where the hang glider, with instructor and student pilot are towed up into the air by a powered ultralight aircraft. In that case you do not have to learn the hard part of launching a hang glider from a training hill. However, anyone who wants to go solo on a hang glider typically does have to learn how to "foot launch" from a sloping hill/mountain side launch site. That's what is harder about hang gliding because it takes many trips up and down the training hill to perfect your launch skills.
    It's a lot easier for an unskilled person to learn how to get a paraglider flying at a training hill. And after a flight down the hill a paraglider is easy to bundle up and carry back to the top of the training hill. You can't "bundle up" a hang glider. You have to carry or roll it up the hill fully assembled and it weighs at least 20 pounds more than a paraglider. However, a gentle breeze can help you "fly" the training glider back up the hill. Doing that is a skill in itself! lol
    BTW - I've been a hang gliding instructor and learned basic paragliding from and with the viewpoint of an instructor.

Future options might include roll/pitch/yaw control in real time to track the sun better(think camera stabilization type rig), auto retraction for end of day, known/detected bad weather, safety when people/boats approach... A computer controlling all that would make sense, so might be nice to design for it as an add on... Would also make sense to auto retract panels in tornado alley, hurricane or other storm prone areas, especially to a safe space(concrete storage space?). You guys might be able to build a fair sized company out of that... Good luck, the world needs entrepreneurs/visionaries like you!!!!

    FYI they’re called paragliders and they are considered the safest form of flight in the way of ultralight aircraft because you’re basically constantly on a parachute which is your wing. You can have motorized or non-motorized but they’re just too open for me and I have too much of a fear of heights. I need to be inside an aircraft.

    A fascinating folding solar design. I've wondered why most only roof the boat and don't create folding surfaces on the sides. Hats off to the engineering behind the origami solar wings.
    By the way, the pilots you saw are called paramotors. A powered parachute is something different as it always involves some kind of ultralight aircraft, usually a 3-wheeled construction with the motor at its rear instead of it being strapped to the pilot's back as a butt fan ;-)

    Awesome video guys, I think the solar panel will take off once you worked out the small stuff and get it producing power. It looks to be half cells which is supposed to be better than regular solar cells. I am thinking maybe something like a peano hinge may be the pivet point you need. It will support the whole length of the triangle and it has a wider swing (range)of motion and folds flat. Just not sure how it would stand up on a boat in salt water though. But Dan your smart guy, I am sure you have a plan.
    You already have a huge following so marketing should be a breez for you guy's.
    Good luck, oh I love all your video's, been following you almost from the start of your don't buy a couch journey.

Way should sail boats have all the fun.??⛵ I hope to see you Dan & Kika out on the water one day in a worm place. Me and boats don't do well in the cold for long periods of times together.
    It's a dream of mine and all I need is the right motor to make my power system work. By next year I hope to have a proto-type built by then. But if you want in let's talk. I have spent a good amount of time planning and designing this system and its so simple that it makes one wonder why it was not thought of long ago.

    Interesting choice with the triangular segmentation. Though for the presumed space savings, I’d imagine one could utilize more available area with comparable sized rectangular segments - like the increasingly common briefcase style portable panels. Still, innovation is always fun.
    PS. With the current design, have you all considered furthering the idea to some sort of solar umbrella form? I can envision setting them inverted upside down, and perhaps including a central hydro tube that could heat water… or something 😅

      @@w8stral Looking at the website it seems to be based on aesthetics. The 3D-rendering arguably looks better than something square could. But a 3D-render is not a finished product... And as you're pointing out here and in one(?) other comment there seems to be a few complications. But I guess carbon fiber can be UV protected during the production...

    • @w8stral
      @w8stral ปีที่แล้ว

      @@angela1984a Sure, just like fiberglass or wood that is exposed degrades under UV radiation and why you have to paint it if you wish it to maintain its structural integrity. You may wish to look at the Airbus A350 paint fiasco currently as an example or the Boeing 787. Paint over the Carbon Fiber structure is degrading leading to lawsuits as every engineer knows with 100% certainty, UV radiation will destroy the epoxy matrix and therefore lead to structural failure. Sorry but true. Race CF boats get away with it as they are not building for long term survival. If they last a decade that is all they care about. A boat owner who wishes to either hold or sell has to think longer term.
      Technically you do not have to paint your fiberglass boat. There are 2 options, make it EXTRA thick and just let the UV destroy the top layers which will flake away over time, or you paint. Everyone has picked painting for the most part. The obvious of this is everyones fiberglass antennas which have to be replaced. UV degrades them structurally until they finally snap, or you are proactive and replace before this happens.

    Trying to be respectful here, yet offer an honest first impression. I guess I don’t see the advantage of his system. In my opinion, It seems like an attempt to re-invent folding solar panel products already out there. At the outset I thought it looked a little delicate and flimsy to install on a sailboat even under light to moderate wind conditions. You are kind to help a friend with their invention. It seems to me that it is going to need many improvements to be more beneficial than existing panels. I’m kind of a cynical old guy though, so there’s that!

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course. This is the initial prototype. Definitely NOT a final product. The main benefit is that when it's stored, it's still producing power. Unlike every other option we've seen that requires a ton of space to store the panels down below on in a cockpit locker when not in use. It also expands to about 4X it's folded size, producing 5X it's folded output. Haven't seen any other folding panels do that.

    Folding solar panels...something that is very much like the panels utilized by NASA and other Space Agencies. Now, if they can make solar panels that can be rolled up, then there would be many possibilities in deploying one on a sailboat, especially on a furled sail. Anyway, the location where you are planning on mounting the folding solar panels looks solid and would maximize potential power gains.

    Nice people, but.. I fail to see the reason for making these panels. You lose a lot of space by going triangular and you can fold square panels just as flat, or at least get pretty close. The only difference is the way you fold them and, well, needing more of these for getting the same amount of cells / power. Triangles could provide more stability overall, but I've never really seen that being an issue.
