Great detail, I did the walk in 1971 when I was 14 years old. I went with my brother who was 18. We had both been training hard in preparation months in advance. When the day finally came we traveled light with just a few drinks and light sandwiches and a bar of Kendal mint cake of course. We set off at a fast pace, almost jogging in parts but slowed down after about six hours. We finally did the full walk in 12 hours and 44 minutes. The worst part was the final hour when I felt slightly light-headed and very weak. We were still happy to have done it, though we were so tired. The following day I could hardly walk and had several blisters on my feet, but we soon recovered and still are very proud, we still talk about it now, but could not do it at 67. Thanks for bringing back some happy memories Paul.

Thats cool, i did it in the very early 80s, couple times aged 11 ish and 13 ish, did with my dad and brother then just my dad. I still walk now and planning on a double crossing this year, mind is strong enough just fingers crossed for the body.....
sadly my dad passed away many years ago now but he would be amazed at how some of the gear has changed, torches especially, as you know you would get a couple hours max and that was not constant, and as we used a compass with a map, thats a thing, you had to use it quite a bit as there was not really many parts that had a defined path and i guess when you did 10 ish years before me it was even less defined.
we didn't have much money and the water proofs made you sweat so much.
After we did the first walk we then went on to Whitby and stayed at a site, cant remember the name but it was owned by a guy that was called Columbo on the old AM CB, he was an ham radio guy as well.
After about four days we then got the train/bus to Middlesbrough and got the coach back to London, I have to admit that i felt like i had been on such an adventure.
Oh as for timings I cant say what it was but we did do it within the 24 hours, The second time we went we had longer time so we sort of done part of the cleveland way as well, such clear memories of the iorn coloured water at Skinny Grove.
Stayed at a small campsite in Staithes, as you go down the hill from the high road it used to be on the left, looking at google maps its a static holiday site now i think.
I think this is where my love of navigation came from. so many people you hear just rely on electronics to navigate
Sorry Stu to have wrote such a long post on here, subbed to your channel. Wanting to get my own channel going as did a couple vids then had an injury but all better now

Thanks, great memories of doing the LWW a few times in the 70's and 80's. I still have the Bill Cowley book and the coffin badges for doing it and also supporting others. The walk seems to be less popular now and more clearly marked. My first time in winter 72 felt like a navigation exercise and we got lost a few times. It's a pity politics have entered into the walk nowadays.

The route has lost all funding so doesn't get maintained, not many people know of its existence which is a pity because its a beautiful route.

@@stuoutdoors1961As well as the original book I've got one of the last editions of the "original" LWW Club guides as well as the"New" LWW Club guides. Looking back in the 80's there were up to 9000 crossings a year.

Roughly 11 hours, we didn't go too hard with the pace and stopped alot to film/take pictures. Plus we had 30 minutes at the cafe
