Well, Mike......if you are still watching comments on this channel - this video gave me the confidence to purchase a cheap used "It Doesn't Work" IC-718 online this week, and guess what - yeah you guessed it - the reset fixed it. Thank you Kind Sir. 73, Alan

Hi Mike thanks for the video, appears history is repeating itself. I recently acquired an IC-718, had a few problems with the 'S' meter not working tracked it down to the ribbon cables from the main board to the display board, a cheap repair. Next the apparent low TX power. The same issue as the one on your bench RF PoWEr set to 'L'!!! Once again I suspect the previous owner moved this radio on and sold 'as is' to me because he couldn't get it to perform.
Thanks for the video, it has helped me out & I'm sure will help other out too in the years to come.

Thanks for this one, Mike. I have the same radio - also purchased second hand. They're a trick to run if the previous owner has had a play - as you discovered.

I just picked up one of these used. I really appreciate what you said in the video. I'm not one for instruction manuals and thought I was just dumb for not being able to work it. I never would have guessed at some of these menu's where you have to stand on one foot while tapping your head. I'll read the manual now. Thanks.

    Hi Mike,
I get the feeling you spent more time on making the video than the time it took to "repair" the radio. Nice to get an easy one from time to time. :-) WB3BJU

I know this is an old post but I've just purchased the very same radio I haven't even taken delivery of yet so I've been googling and you tubing as much info as I can to gain some knowledge before I even sit it on my bench ,So seeing some poor gentleman has bought a real jack in the box ( full of suprises ) radio is interesting to me because you've explained many simple things , but being new to something can often confuse even the smartest of people . Very interesting post really enjoyed.... yes I've clicked and subscribed 👍👍👍👍👍👍

great video !! the things you mentioned about the menus and the related issues are all to familiar.. i just bought a 2nd hand 718 from a gent. that was only a rear old that had no problems or issues ... fortunately the owners manual was included.. the menus are straight forward after you know where to look and how to get into them.. i got my menu skills from a anytone at666.. same deal once you learn you way about its all good .. thanks .. 73's

I had one come to the shop and its was just a simple ground problem. After tuning the audio was very good for a solid state ham radio. I did change a few diodes but nothing radical.

Mine was working fine. I had sold it to someone and they only got 10w out they said. I told them about this. I build my own Retro-vintage electret mikes from Non-working Xtal headsets and re-seal them and make hand mikes from my EL -84 6BQ5 AM/CW transmitter. I told him to adjust the gain or if that don't work, change out the mic.

I own this radio and I love it. The other problem with this radio is if you don't use it for a while and come back to it, you need to refresh your memory with rereading the manual.

    • @mikesradiorepair

Very true. It's even worse for me because I have to work on radios like this. Unless it's something I own and use regularly I have to read the owners manual before I can even start to diagnose problems.

Another LOL, I bought a new 718 from HRO 4 years ago, it came in the next day, just in time for a mod, lol. I did the mod tested everything, put it back in the box, lol. About 8-9 months ago I pulled it out, put it on the benchn, hooked up to AH4, 130ft EF

I suppose if you don't have a current limiter on the supply and you're worried about turning it on, you can just temporarily install a lower current fuse. Once it passes a turn on test, put the regular fuse back in.

Ebay that mic can be had for $9-$14 not as good as the Japan made ones but it can be with a bit of tinkering.

I have one of those scanners here at the bench. Best advice I can give for those scanners is for easy programming get a programming cable and download the software. It is SO MUCH FASTER to program the radio with a computer than it is through the keypad.

I had a ham bring me a Yaesu FT 2980 2 meter radio he screwed up the menu settings in. It wasn't the typical user menu he got into the service menus and screwed up every setting. Nothing worked. A master reset doesn't reset the service menus. Thankfully i had a Yeasu FT2900 of my own and the default settings were the same. I used that as a guide to reset everything. I just knew he'd bricked that radio. But after i reset everything It worked just fine. When they can't use a screwdriver to "tune it up" they use menus!

In town around power lines it sucks the the filtering on it or the is either too much or too less besides that it's a great radio

    • @mikesradiorepair
      @mikesradiorepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Filtering varies widely from radio to radio. Your best bet is to get a external DSP filter, DSP speaker or even a vintage Autek Research audio filter. They can pretty much wipe out interference when properly adjusted.

The RFL+SQL is a ICOM setting and it can be set in the options menu. The R75 has the same setting but the default setting is silly. It should have been set to SQL only as default, IMHO.

    • @tf7274

In all modes or just am? They are notorious for being used by cb guys who find out their expensive cb needs to have $200 of filters installed to use properly on 11 meters because it is very narrow stock. So they could have saved a tonne of money and bought a better rig for way less.
