    good catch on that filter Mike. Gosh I do not know how many times I have replaced finals in this very same radio. Along with the TS-140. Each one had the AM carrier turned wide open. Thanks for sharing.

I wish I had a mentor with the knowledge you have... it is starting to be late in life to start a new career, buy lab equipement and rentabilize all of this... I feel I missed what I would have really enjoy doing in my life...

    Hi Mike, I have a 757GX first model , but now it's dead in the water. Cracked a couple of transformers and a tech told me I'm sol. lol it was a great radio. Love your videos man!

    • @mikesradiorepair
      @mikesradiorepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I assume you mean the adjustable ferrite cores in the transformers are cracked. If so you should be able to remove the transformers, extract the broken cores and install new ones. Some times you can flip the core over and reinstall it. Depends on if there is enough of it left to allow full tuning range. Also depends on what type it is. If it has a hollow hex center that's the kind I'm talking about. If it has a straight slot like a regular screw it has to be replaced, can't flip those over.

    I operated one of these for a short while and really enjoyed it. Very simple to operate no annoying menu functionality and worked with good enough performance for me. Nice to see you radio analyser in use again. Unfortunately since I bought the Chevy I don’t appear to have any spare change to buy test gear? I bet you had to fight that board out all the way LOL. Regards Chris. Must remember to try and tune into that time signal.

    FT757gxii was my first hf rig. Being that I was a new ham and didn't know crap, I set the rig up exactly per the manual and used the stock microphone because I couldn't afford a better one. I was constantly accused of mods, etc. due to the tx audio quality, and it had a hot receiver. I wish I still had it now.

    Great job Mike. The 757 aeries was and is an wonderful transceiver (even for it's almost 30 years age.). I hope that people checking out your clip for the first time didn't find the fact that you totally ignored the owners request to turn the radio up too 120 watts of output pompous on your part (it's an absurd request to begin with.) And only a golden screwdriver would gladly have done so for the owner of this 757. People who have never seen your clips before or don't know who you are should not find the fact that you ignored that request to be pompous. If they want a job done right then it should be sent to you or someone with your knowledge and expertise. If they want 120 watt HF transceiver they should send their equipment to a golden screwdriver who would gladly give them exactly what they want. Hell! Why not 150 watts?! Those people must understand that those jobs are and should be left to Golden screwdrivers. The fact that you turn down the am carrier to 25 Watts was absolutely the correct thing to do. I'm not familiar with any HF transceivers (of this vintage and even newer) that transmit more than 25 max Watts in amplitude modulation (5 watts minimum.) Those who have never dealt with you or are watching this particular video or any of your videos for the first time should know that they are getting top quality workmanship. And no matter their request for a ridiculous modification they should know and understand that the final decision on whether you will follow the directions to the t will be up to you in the end. This video substantiates that statement. I've been doing business with you for almost four years now and have been nothing more than happy with every single job that you've done on every single piece of equipment I've sent you. I enjoyed this video immensely. I always like the seven five seven series yeasu and although I've never owned one. I have considered purchasing one in the past but the prices on much more modern HF transceivers and no cycle for another year or two makes it a buyer's market. I've heard several of them on SSB and if repaired/restored and aligned properly should and do sound as good or better than any SSB 11 meter modern transceiver on the market. Great work. Excellent video. Keep up the good work my brother. 73

      @TheLonesometoad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, it's not an absurd request if you listened to why I requested it. The DRIVE control s on these rigs are very sensitive and at low power are nearly impossible to manage when attempting to drive an amp. If the carrier is set to 25 AM watts when the DRIVE is maximum, it's cuts the power to ZERO by the time it hits 3 oclock. The rest of the travel is useless. If the carrier is set to 100+ at maximum, I have adjustment all the way down to 9 oclock. This makes it much easier and much more precise when driving an amp and you need 2, 3, or 4, watts output from the radio. Listen to what I said before shooting your mouth.

    • @zooyawk4526
      @zooyawk4526 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheLonesometoad my reply was never meant as an insult. I apologize that you took it that way. If you have legitimate reasons for wanting your transceiver transmitting at 120 watts it's obviously your prerogative. Using the word absurd may have been a bit over-the-top and once again I apologize. I hope that when you get it back the 757 works better then it did when it was brand new. In many cases depending on who's doing the work a 30 or even 40 year old piece of equipment with proper repair and or manufacturer manual amended modifications performed probably on a piece of equipment cen and usually will have that piece of equipment working better than new. I wish you nothing but the best. And I will reiterate on my original reply the seven five seven isn't excellent transceiver and will most likely sound better on SSB then any modern 11 meter CB radio export or not. Modern or vintage. Good luck. 73's

    • @TheLonesometoad
      @TheLonesometoad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zooyawk4526 : I understand your opinions on the operations of these rigs, as I share them them as well. I , too, am appalled by some of the ridiculous modifications being done to most of the radio equipment today. You see, I'm not a newb, as I have been "radioing" since about 1962. I started out this journey using an RCA MK VII radio. Through the years I have learned to perform many of my own repairs. But with no formal training, I recognize my limitations and seek out someone who has the knowledge and experience to perform the task I require.
      I, too, apologize for my first response as I was probably a bit sensitive over the ridicule and condescension I was receiving from the monologue in the video. Over the years I have owned about 7 of these 757s as I find them to be extremely versatile and quality units. I know these rigs and their capabilities and I know when I need something done. I know better than to take a 25Watt radio and jack over 100W out of it. Fact is, I NEVER run more than 12 Watts of AM carrier on these rigs. But as I said, it's a matter of being able to more easily adjust the output. Another way to achieve this would be to use a pot of different value. That would involve much more work and expense. Anyhow, I'm sorry for jumping on you as I did,. It just seemed to me at the time that you didn't listen to what my note said and just assumed I was another Joe Blow CBr looking for the rainbow at the end of a magic golden screwdriver, when nothing could be further from the truth.
      I did receive the radio back working very well and it has already been sold. I now run an FT-990 with an MD-1B and love it.

    That 25W carrier is 100W-PEP, so it technically still does 100W on AM. The 2x2879 final transistors could potentially do 200W-PEP in AM or SSB mode, but the PA isn't designed for that and since those transistors are outrageously expensive and almost unobtainium status, it's not worth going for full smoke.

    I acquired my General ticket last year and I have a used Yaesu FT-757GX and an LK500ZB Amp Supply Amp I inherited from my deceased uncle KK4LZ. I have read the FT-757GX Operator's manual and I am not sure which connection I plug the rca jack in on the back of the radio. Does the LK500ZB have a relay coil voltage over 50 volts? According to the manual the internal control relay in the FT-7 5 7GX is not designed to handle high voltage (above 50 V) or current (above 400 mA). Can you advise how I connect the radio to this amp?
    Thank you

      I hate needing special tools for only occasional use, but they're a godsend when even a modified tool does not work well. I have a special thin-walled 3/16-inch nut driver made by AMP, Inc. just for the locking hardware on D-series connectors (like RS-232 or VGA video style). Before getting it I'd used a 1/4-inch drive socket ground down, but it would still not clear the backshell properly.

    One issue that has been found with some radios and the failing 455KHz filters is that there is voltage being applied across the filter. They should actually be isolated from the DC voltage by coupling capacitors on their input and output pins. Just thought I would mention that.

    Here I explain what happens with my Yaesu FT-450.
    A few days ago I made the mistake of trying a radio from a friend of mine when my
    FT-450 was on receiving, they had two different antennas but the separation
    between the antennas on the roof are 3 meters. When I was testing the radio in transmission
    I felt a burning smell from my friend and I realized that it was coming from my radio, at the moment
    I turned it off and when I turned it back on it had changed many things like:
    - TRANSMIT BUT DOES NOT GIVE ANY OUT POWER IN (AM) MODE ON ANY BAND.
    - THE SYSTEM (ALC) DOESN'T WORK, NEVER MARK ANYTHING ON THE DISPLAY, BEFORE IT WORKED
    VERY GOOD.
    - ESPECIALLY IN 6M (50MHZ) BEFORE HAD 100 WATT, NOW ONLY HAS 10WATT AND WHEN
    CW OR SSB TRANSFER FEELS MY VOICE OR NOISE IN THE RADIO HORN.
    - THE INTERNAL RADIO TUNER ANTENNA DOES NOT ADJUST IN SOME BANDS AND HIGH SWR
    WITH GHOST ANTENNA DUMMY 50OHM ADJUST 1: 1 ALMOST ALL BANDS, I REMOVED
    THE RADIO TUNER ANTENNA AND CONTINUES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, THE PROBLEM IS NOT
    THE INT-TUNER OF THE FT-450.
    - BEFORE ALMOST ALL BANDS DRAWN 100 WATT CW AND ALMOST 90 WATT SSB. NOW HIM
    RESULT WITH LOAD DUMMY 50OHM PER BAND IS:
    160m ...

    radio horn. He also seems to be crazy, he makes noise and he seems to have serious
    problems.
    I RESET HOME OF THE RADIO AND CONTINUE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, THE PARAMETERS
    THE HIDDEN MENU IS CORRECT, THE RECEPTION IS CONSIDERED GOOD IN ALL
    THE BANDS AND MODES.
    I CHECK THE BOARDS OR BOARDS AND ALL ARE IN GOOD PHYSICAL CONDITION, NONE
    COMPONENT SEEMS TO BE BURNED. BEFORE MAKING THE ERROR MY RADIO WAS WORKING
    NO PROBLEM WITH 100 WATT IN ALL THE BANDS AND THE AUT INT ALSO WORKED
    NO PROBLEM.
    I HOPE THAT WITH THESE DATA YOU CAN GIVE ME AN IDEA OR OPINION OF WHAT PROBLEM
    THE TEAM HAS THOUSAND THANKS IN ADVANCE.
    note :Now I have realized that when I press the ATT or IPO key that is only for reception it falls
    even more the power in all the bands, in addition I tested it in reception 6m 50mhz and it has problems
    also at the reception .
