I can't believe you can just organize a flight of 109 civ planes with private pilots. Take off 3 wide. Land 2 wide on the same runway and have the 3rd plane land on the parallel. And it even went smoothly. Insane.
You have to realise, pilots are the only people who will listen unless you in a plane
I think this is so neat
I mean, there is no law stopping them... I think there is no law stopping a US citizen from manufacturing their own nuclear warhead. I think one person even built three and they were bought by the government. Funny things have happened all throughout US history because no one thought it could ever happen. That being said, must have looked out of the ordinary for any radar operator who wasn't briefed on the formation.

The fact that nobody died during that take off is the most amazing part of the whole event.

It's almost like safety regulations tend to have huge margins for error and with a little planning crazy things can be safer then normal operations.
Especially considering how small these planes are and how large the runways are because they need to support much larger craft.
@@ARockRaider The skills that you would build across the (often months of) preparation and training for something like this involving so many aviators is probably pretty substantial as well.
I know almost nothing about these events, but I can also tell the people I've seen criticizing it so far don't either.
Till 1 wrong moment happens could ignited a tragedy..

@@ARockRaider I look at it like a car meet, there is going to be the idiot that puts it in the bushes trying to drift out of a parking lot. This event was like that.
109 planes involved, inevitably some of these guys are probably idiots. Completely ignoring general rules of aviation because you're in a cool group of planes is ridiculous.
I can just imagine that massive formation popping up in atc radars like popcorn lol

I was a flight line marshaller with Civil Air Patrol at Oshkosh 08. When big groups like this came in, your arms got very tired from holding them over your head and directing them to parking! Although it was cool seeing tons of airplanes in the air!
eyo another blue beret, definitely the time of my life when i wasnt a pilot, but now that i am, im certainly glad i get to watch new groups of cadets do it while i fly by them lol.

@@DustinDawind of course, but the brief air traffic was still funny. They were definitely a huge traffic obstacle so atc probably didn't want them up any longer than they needed to be.

They close down a ton of the surrounding airspace - also Oshkosh becomes the worlds busiest airport during this time
As a military pilot with training for formation flying and formation takeoffs/landings.....there is NO WAY I would participate in this boondoggle with a bunch of random people.

It's like watching mass take offs of planes from air force bases in WW2. Quite a really cool thing to watch, mass take offs and landing.
I've always wondered how quick could a pilot become queezy in the smaller planes. I don't get motion sickness, even while marking time on a boat during my military service but I've see others get sick almost immediately. It's always seemed to me that being in a smaller plane one would be more susceptible to becoming sick, considering the amount of buffeting that a single engine plane might displace verses a larger plane
It’s not much different in a General Aviation aircraft. You don’t really notice the buffeting and turbulence the more you fly. There is a big difference in what you feel in a 700 pound plane or glider than what you feel in a 3000 pound airplane.
Any airsickness potential is mitigated by the fact that pilots spend 75-95% of their time looking outside of the aircraft. In the video, his airsickness issue was caused by his focusing on the screens inside the airplane.
Matt, great video, most interesting perhaps (for me only) was the fact the the Bonanza in front of you was 6656R. It was my first V35B, a fabulous airplane. The guy we sold it to still owns it. I have had two more Beechs since, a B58TC for 15 years and my current ride another V35B. It was ABS Bo of the month in June 2022.
Maybe in a cirrus I’d do a formation flight, but not a plane without caps. Hats off to you and the crew, fantastic flight, you’re braver than me.

As a military pilot who has seen the quality of most GA weekend warrior pilots this is absolutely terrifying.
Somehow all you military guys that never fly GA are terrified, but all the military guys I know who fly this kind of stuff think it’s the greatest thing ever 🤷♂️
@@mattguthmiller i fly GA when i have time and i love your videos man, i do. Its cool that it all went off without a mishap ill grant you that. But this is A LOT of airplanes in the sky and im worried about others repeating this with even less proficiency/ training and having an accident. Even in the miltary forms is dangerous and we practice all the time with a Lot fewer birds. Just my thoughts and once again nothing but respect for you personally.

Probably, not even trained US Military pilots can manage to keep low accident rates. Americans have a reputation for suffering from Cognitive Dissonance. Which is why they experience higher accident rates than the average non-American pilot. I would much more trust a European pilot in something like this. Not hotdogging yankees.
Fascinated at the very different beacon/strobe lights and locations and landing lights - LED or standard - fitted to different Bonanzas!
B2OSH XXXII was a ton of fun. I was glad to take my 82-yo father (who is CP-AMEL). We camped, and enjoyed the comraderie of the B2OSH crew. Looking forward to 2023 and B2OSH XXXIII.

I would say you have no idea how cool this is, but this group of people do, in fact, know how cool this is. Love it.
It's just funny how casually the controller responds with flight of 109 bonanza's cleared to land.
On any other day it would have been chaos in the tower.
Must say it does seem a lot less hectic coming in to oshkosh with a flight of 109 then it is with a single plane.
I did a group arrival with the Stinsons in 2021, I thought it was way easier than going in by myself!
Makes me want a Bonanza even more. What fun!

Here in Wisconsin we get this every summer, three wide flights 30 planes deep, then every five years our highways fill up with 10 wide 50 Harleys deep ride ins

I can't imagine a space where 3 abeam on takeoff (with pilots you've never even met) is not waiting for it's chance to be a headline. The efforts of planning and coordination are to be applauded, but the outcomes are not safe.
Who says they have never even met? Don’t they hold training clinics to practice this before the show? It’s not like they literally show up to the same airport and take off 5 min later.
FWIW, B2O has done this more than 30 times.
@@JimHausch I understand that they have the mass briefings, and they have been done many times before. I believe the rule I was taught was "capable of and qualified for" formation flight. Formation can be a mile (or miles) in trail. Direct abeam takeoff is something the Blue Angels don't do. Three 30 year old airplanes, some with 80 yo pilots, are a flat tire, or a dropped cell phone away from a fireball. I can't recall all the names, but they have them where the three elements depart in a pattern that leaves every airplane an "out". Have you ever departed with your eyes 90 degrees to the right?
@@CharlesCornettFL clinic attendance and "approval" from clinic sponsors is required each year, too. That happens well before the event. The training involves formation takeoffs and landings as well as much longer flights of tighter station keeping than used for the bulk of the flight from LaCrosse to OSH.
The clinics train to higher level of performance than is required for B2OSH. That being said, B2OSH in 2018 went sideways due to the field closing due to weather while we were en route. I tucked up on my lead and trusted him with my life. It was the training from the clinic that made that possible. 2018 resulted in some structural changes to B2OSH that have further improved saftey.
I have done the FISK arrival and this seems safer to me. The fact that so few accidents/fatalities occur at/around OSH speaks for itself.
I guess it comes down to what level of risk each pilot is willing to accept.
@@JimHausch the Bonanzas aren't the only mass arrivals. The only thing that really creeped me out is a pilot looking 90 degrees right (constantly) on a take off roll. What is gained by pulling his eyes off engine instruments, centerline drift, runway obstructions, airspeed, or bird avoidance? 3-5 seconds maybe? Abeam takeoffs are an unnecessary and dangerous stunt for a photo op... times 30 or so? The enroute stuff is well tried, vetted, and executed. On the runway is my gripe.
Get yourself a couple of hard points and you got yourself a a civil air patrol that bites
Some invaders be expecting F16s or A10s instead they get a 109 of these little guys to raise hell
Now you got me thinking about if the US gets invaded (Extremely unlikely I know) and along with the greatest jets and drones of our age, tens of thousands of armed civilian planes take to the skys for a number of sorties. The biggest "You can't shoot us ALL down" in the sky.
The second amendment allows citizens in the US the right to bear arms correct? I'm thinking, why not. But instead of these, why not make some attritionable jets that are really cheap, easy to build, learn to fly, maintain and bail.

And entire airfields of mothballed fighters and bombers at the bone yards in California to Arizona
There’s entire carrier strike groups worth of destroyers, aircraft carriers and battle ships in the hands of civilians along the east and west coast of the US plus Hawaii
How many of these are functional ? Little to none but if we really wanted to we could probably make 60 percent work
Oh and don’t forget the countless artillery pieces, tanks, and cannons people shoot for fun

I was working the flight line marshalling planes in the South 40 while you guys were coming in. I could see the Chinooks just hovering out towards the lake waiting for the mass arrival to finish so they could come in to land. We know it's break time in the South 40 when the mass arrivals start coming in to park in the North 40, ha.

I can't believe they allow take off like that. What if someone blew a tire and yawed to the right or left. Wow, that really amazes me that ATC does that. Military ok, but civilian. No way man.

In a formation, the pilots are solely responsible for the safety and spacing of their aircraft. The controller cleared the entire flight of 109 as a single aircraft. What happens within the flight falls on the pilots.
TLDR: it’s not ATC’s responsibility to micromanage their flight.

109. The perfect number.
When I was a young boy, living in a small rural town, I would run outside when I heard an airplane approaching. I can only imaging as the 109 BONANZAS flew over there were some very excited kids that will become future pilots.
I am a grown up, but still run out every time I hear a plane going over low. Especially the older propeller ones, the sound of those engines never disappoints!
@@jasonnicholasschwarz7788 You must not live nearby any airports or else you'd get tired of that really quick lol. I'm pretty close to a private airport and then the main commercial airport is only 10 miles or so away from that airport.
I will say it is interesting to see when the really big planes are rerouting or having to change their flight plan since they will typically be lower than normal for the area and it often just looks like they're hovering in the air. Super weird to see from the ground and I once thought one of the planes was an RC plane the first time I saw it happen. I know they're actually moving and I also know that they're still at a safe height btw.
This content was fun to watch. kinda gutsy though. Not sure about the formation take-offs and landings and extended ground run.
